Migraine relief - help me!

Smarshian · 08/03/2020 07:37

Please give me your hints and tips. Had a migraine since Tuesday - never had one before. I’m at a point I want to cut my own head off.
Please give me some solutions. Extra sleep, ibuprofen, paracetamol and water have not helped.

Caffeine, dark room, heat pads on head, eye mask, eye drops

Monday, GP: triptans

ArthurShelbysTash · 08/03/2020 07:39

Triptan. You can buy 1 or 2 over the counter. It might be too late for this attack though.
I find a heat pack on my neck and full fat coke can sometimes help but it really is trial and error.
You have my sympathy. My attacks can last days, I am a chronic sufferer so have more days without than with.
Get well soon.

AriadnesFilament · 08/03/2020 07:39

Oh, and drink loads

YeahWhatevver · 08/03/2020 07:40

Have you got someone at home who can give you a head massage?

More days with than without! Yesterday was a bad day, it makes me droopy!

Potsie · 08/03/2020 07:41

I have found taking painkillers with Coca Cola (full sugar) really helps. I also use tiger balm on my neck and shoulders and across my forehead and then go back to bed. Hope you feel better soon.

belay · 08/03/2020 07:41

Go to Boots pharmacy. They can give you some medicine to last until tomorrow 💕

ArthurShelbysTash · 08/03/2020 07:42

@YeahWhatevver the thought of someone touching my head makes me want to spew!

GaaaaarlicBread · 08/03/2020 07:43

I have a cold eye mask (it’s got an aloe gel in it) that you keep in the freezer , and when a migraine strikes, get yourself into a dark room as soon as possible , no screens, close the curtains and put the eye mask on. Drink loads of water and take some strong pain killers without caffeine in them.
Fellow migraine sufferer here and that’s all that works for me.
I’ll try and find a link to the mask x

I suffer from chronic migraines. Paracetamol with codeine is significantly more effective than just paracetamol.

If you are nauseous, try to keep drinking water, & keep a bucket nearby. It's a lot less horrible to be sick if you have water in your stomach, compared to retching bile. Even if it doesn't make an obvious difference to the migraine, it helps in other ways.

Don't buy triptans over the counter. They aren't suitable for every type of migraine. I can't take them (would probably cause me to have a stroke). Please get to a GP ASAP to get proper medical help.

Also, try warmth or cold on your head. If warmth helps, put a soft beanie type hat on. And consider a hot shower if you think you can manage it.

AwdBovril · 08/03/2020 07:52

Also, try different positions to rest. Laying flat, on your side/back. Propped up on pillows - I find this better (mostly) as there is less pressure on my head.

TheFastandTheCurious · 08/03/2020 07:53

If you get them regularly go and see you GP about a preventative, I'm on propranolol and have had no migraines since. I've gone from 2 or 3 a month to nothing

GruciusMalfoy · 08/03/2020 07:59

Ear plugs, dark room, experiment with heat or ice pack (I usually go for ice, but it can vary) caffeine helps me alongside paracetamol/cocodamol and ibuprofen together. Try moving as little as possible.

I've been keeping track of mine with an app recently, to see if it warrants a trip to the GP.

Icecreamsoda99 · 08/03/2020 07:59

I second the full fat coke and paracetamol with codeine! Keep your eyes closed as much a possible, if laying down makes you feel sick prop yourself up as much as you can.

GruciusMalfoy · 08/03/2020 08:03

Oh, also, if you're congested, olbas oil type spray up the nose can alleviate that pressure which does affect me fairly often.

Lougle · 08/03/2020 08:09

Don't take it if you've had ibuprofen in the last day, but a can of full fat coke and 900mg (3 big tablets) of dissolvable aspirin is as good as triptans.

EntirelyAnonymised · 08/03/2020 08:10

Neither Paracetamol nor codeine help me.

Soluble aspirin in coke helps to knock the edges off mine if I don’t have triptans. Also a salty snack, if I can manage it. I also have a daily prescription preventative and see a consultant neurologist every 6 (have done for 20yrs) or so months as I have complex migraines and a lot of other risk factors that mean he isn’t happy to discharge me to my GP. The preventive doesn’t remove them completely but it has reduced the severity & frequency considerably, I now ‘only’ have an attack on average once a week/10 days (lasting around 7-30 hours) rather than two or three a week.

Too much sugar and any caffeine are massive triggers for me, so much so that I avoid them in daily life. They do help in the event of an attack, to sort of ‘fire’ the medication around my system though.

Hope you feel better soon x

SNAP, Lougle

QueenOfOversharing · 08/03/2020 08:12

3 x soluble aspirin - sounds ridiculous but was suggested by A&E doctor & it often helps mine. Obvious caveat - IF YOU ARE OK TO TAKE ASPIRIN.

Hagbeth · 08/03/2020 08:13

Sumatriptan. Ask you GP for a prescription because the pharmacy are often hard to persuade to sell them. Max 2 tabs a day.

maddening · 08/03/2020 08:13

If you have never had migraines and even migraine meds don't take the edge off I would speak to a Dr, my dbro had a headache that would not go and went to go when his eyes went blood shot and it turned out to be viral meningitis - the Dr said that any headache that lasts over a day and does not improve with pain meds should be referred to a GP.

QueenOfOversharing · 08/03/2020 08:13

Snap over here too! Didn't RTFT before posting. Such a noob.

EntirelyAnonymised · 08/03/2020 08:15

My neurologist actually recommended that I suck a baby aspirin every day (same as is recommended for those with elevated cardiovascular risk) to reduce my risk, as my migraine types and family history put me at increased risk of stroke. He also says it’ll likely reduce the incidence of migraine for me too. I always forget though. I should probably get into the habit Hmm

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 08/03/2020 08:18

Red Bull and paracetamol and ibuprofen at the same time. Some people find the Taurine in RB helps with migraine (I have Taurine supplements now). RB also contains a lot of caffeine.

Ice pack on the back of my neck.
