To think that people should be panicking over a child sneezing

In the supermarket this morning and DD randomly
Sneezed a couple times. She does have a mild snotty nose. No fever, no cough definitely just a runny nose. She also has a cat allergy. She visited my grans yesterday and every time she does she sneezes for a couple days afterwards. I believe she is allergic to them like her daddy.

The Sainsburys worker looked at me in disgust and asked if she should be in here.

I know people are concerned. I get the panic..

Aibu to think that people are just getting usual common colds, normal viruses, normal bugs that aren’t coronavirus and a child’s sneeze is nothing to worry about.

Kids are coughing and sneezing constantly anyway!

Aibu to take my kid to the supermarket without feeling guilty? She’s not poorly...

Shouldn’t be panicking ** sorry

Yanbu now you have clarified! I also have the sneezes at the moment, seem to have had them for months.

bananahood · 07/03/2020 14:08

The baby coughed at DD's gymnastics this morning and people around us stood up to move away. Craziness!

TiredMum10 · 07/03/2020 14:10

There was a man at the table next to us sneezing, pulling his nose and looked terrible. We moved. He looked so dreadful but the snooty sneezing was just awful. That seems like a case of stay home.

Catapillarsruletheworld · 07/03/2020 14:10

It’s mental isn’t it. People are still going to get all the normal coughs and colds!

DesLynamsMoustache · 07/03/2020 14:11

I think it would be harder to find young kids who don't have some sort of cough or cold at the moment! All DD's little pals have varying degrees of snottiness and DD herself still has a cough left over from a cold she had a few weeks ago.

whatswithtodaytoday · 07/03/2020 14:13

A snotty cold is not a symptom of coronavirus, so yes people are very stupid to be alarmed by a child with a cold.

StinkyWizleteets · 07/03/2020 14:16

I guess it’s all very silly when you’re generally healthy but you don’t know how those around you may be keeping. Immunocompromised people are everywhere. Are we expected to stay indoors because people and their kids have no basic hygiene or manners? Covid is only one virus among many other potentially damaging health problems those who have weakened immune systems or ill health have to protect themselves against.

cologne4711 · 07/03/2020 14:17

Sniffles are quite normal this time of year but people are badly informed and think it's a symptom of COVID-19. YANBU OP.

RoseAndRose · 07/03/2020 14:18

Sneezing isn't a Covid-19 symptom

cologne4711 · 07/03/2020 14:20

Immunocompromised people are everywhere. Are we expected to stay indoors because people and their kids have no basic hygiene or manners

But people can sneeze because something is up their nose or an allergy as the OP said. Or cough because something tickled their throat or went down the wrong way. Not every sneeze or cough is a symptom of disease. And are you really saying everyone needs to stay indoors every time they are anything less than 100% healthy? It's just not realistic.

Honeybee85 · 07/03/2020 14:22

Yanbu OP.
My baby sneezed just once this morning when we were in the hospital for his check up and the hospital receptionist gave him a very unpleasant look. She didn’t say anything (probably because I gave her the same look back on behalf of my little boy). I would have understood her concern if he came in coughing and non stop sneezing but come on, people sneeze every now and then, no need for panic for just one.

Reginabambina · 07/03/2020 14:22

YANBU. The vast majority of the time that someone sneezes it’s not because they’re ill.

DesLynamsMoustache · 07/03/2020 14:22

You can't really teach very young children hygiene and basic manners! My DD is 12mo. When she coughs or sneezes, I can't really do anything about it. She's too young to know she has to blow her nose or cover her mouth to cough 🤷‍♀️

fiddledefiddle · 07/03/2020 14:23

It's great, I sneezed as I got on the train to work and had an extra seat next to me as nobody would sit by me Grin

Reginabambina · 07/03/2020 14:23

@StinkyWizleteets how is sneezing a lack of basic hygiene or manners? It’s involuntary.

iVampire · 07/03/2020 14:26

You can sneeze into a handkerchief, or if you haven’t got one (at all or in time) into your sleeve.

Way better than spending aerosolised and possibly germy snot for feet around you.

I am immunocompromised, and think it is very antisocial for people not to take basic hygiene precautions which protect everyone

The current outbreak might just leave, if we are lucky, a legacy of greater knowledge and greater consideration about minimising the spread of everything

piscis · 07/03/2020 14:26

People should be better informed, Coronavirus doesn't cause a snotty nose

Honeybee85 · 07/03/2020 14:28

It’s advised here that if you have to sneeze, to sneeze into the inside of your elbow.

I use my elbow too to open doors sometimes if my hands are dirty or the doorhandle seems dirty and I can’t wash my hands afterwards.

fiddledefiddle · 07/03/2020 14:30

Once the hay fever season kicks off properly there are going to be a lot of social outcasts.

TabbyMumz · 07/03/2020 14:32

Are you sure about this panic...we've been out all morning in quite a big town...people are all mingling as normal in coffee shops, handling change, old people all there, everything normal. I've had a cold for weeks, noone has batted an eyelid.

Thurmanmurman · 07/03/2020 14:32

Coronavirus is not even in the top 50 of things I’m worried about. The thing that does terrify me, is how grown adults are panicking over this and in turn passing on the hysteria to their children. Panic is never the best option in any situation. Be concerned and protect yourself by all means, but the reaction of some people is utterly pathetic IMO.

Icecreamdiva · 07/03/2020 14:35

My hay fever kicked in at the beginning of January as it does every year! Thankfully with a combination of antihistamine tablets, nasal spray and eye drops I’m keeping the worst of the symptoms at bay.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 07/03/2020 14:39

Everyone's in a state atm. I went to the supermarket yesterday evening and all the customers were giving each other a wide berth and I have to admit that I also kept my distance from anyone who looked vaguely under the weather. It's ridiculous really, but Covid-19 is so hyped-up in the media that people are scared.

StinkyWizleteets · 07/03/2020 14:42

Sorry I badly worded. Sneezing without covering nose and mouth with a tissue or sleeve is bad manners and poor hygiene. Not all sneezing is related to illness but are the immunocompromised expected to know by looking who has the lurgy and who’s been stroking their pussy?
