Particularly weekends.

Me and DH are trying to cut down on drinking - as every weekend once kids are in bed we're reaching for a bottle or two of wine. I'm really trying to be a bit healthier to feel better physically and mentally and want to cut this down to maybe just one weekend a month - or ideally, not at all!

But what do we do ?? We really enjoy sitting listening to music , having a few drinks and chatting. It's our way to unwind. We spend the weekdays sat watching Netflix or catching up on work so need something different to do.

What do you guys do ? ( that doesn't involve drinking )

DownToTheSeaAgain · 07/03/2020 19:11

I'm a Scout leader and on the PTA. That takes up a lot of evenings.

Mummadeeze · 07/03/2020 19:22

Play games on my phone, read crime fiction novels, mainly watch TV. Sometimes do a workout video. Sometimes cook meal for taking to work. Speak to family on the phone. If I didn’t have a DD I would join an amateur dramatics society, a tennis club and a choir and go to those. One day.

TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY · 07/03/2020 20:02

we are 24/7 carers and home educators as boys are disabled and need 24/7 care and home educated and dont sleep

we follow the learn through life approach to education, this means learning takes place at all hours

but i am a serial comper,i enter hundreds of online competitions a day

i had a win today i received a 50 gift card from krispy kreme doughnuts

theres loads of website dedicated to it.others provide you with the link and the answers and you just fill in the details

bene doing it for years now and ive won a fair bit over the years

neversleepagain · 07/03/2020 20:09

I like to spend evenings on my own as does dh. He watches TV and I sit in bed reading or watching TV. We have busy weekends so I like to unwind alone on Saturdays. A cup of tea and my book alone is my idea of heaven.

DCIRozHuntley · 07/03/2020 20:09

I do voluntary work from home, go out to Clubbercise, study a course, read, go to sleep early, go for a walk, Mumsnet, phone my mum, go to a friends for a cuppa (or meet them at the McDonald's next to Asdaif I've shopping to do!).

Together we occasionally play a board game or cards, but we often watch Netflix, have a takeaway (sit up at table to eat and chat) or even have sex Shock

DH does yoga or resistance training, builds computers or plays PC games.

We probably drink about 2 units of alcohol a month between us. Drinking just doesn't add anything to our lives.

Good luck OP Brew

Thinking back to early adulthood and the care free nights out and then reading this makes me want to weep. I’m the same and it just highlights how dull life becomes once kids come along.

TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY · 07/03/2020 20:15

forgot to add we are a teetotal house hold as well

johnstonfont · 07/03/2020 20:16

Watch TV & knit.

If I have friends round we will often play a boardgame.

On the weekend, just watch TV and eat nice food. I've recently gone back to work after mat leave and have gotten into the habit of drinking on a Saturday night too, only half a bottle of Prosecco max but previously I was going weeks without alcohol. Two small DCs so we don't do very much! It's lovely though, I love staying in and chilling out.

tempnamechange98765 · 07/03/2020 20:18

In the week we don't have every evening free though, I go to the gym one or sometimes two nights, and either me or DH usually have something on at least one other week night eg seeing friends so the other nights again are just chilling. I'm usually knackered after DC are in bed!

Littleshortcake · 07/03/2020 20:21

During the week I tend to watch junk on t.v. and some nights I do a fitness class.

At the moment I am Marie kondoing so I might take 20 mins to fill a charity bag. Or get one job done (quickly) like sort the freezer or batch cook prep.

Otherwise I am happy to have a vodka and a movie. I agree life is hard enough. Only have one drink and make it last. What about 0% beer?

BrassicaBabe · 07/03/2020 20:26

Heavens. You guys are impressive. I sit on the sofa and drink wine 🤦🏻‍♀️

SuperMumTum · 07/03/2020 20:40

I go to bed at the same time as the DC after a bit of reading. I decided this would be the year that I sorted out my sleep and since Jan I'm now getting well over 8 hours a night. It's really improved my mood and I'm much nicer to everyone! The housework is suffering but I don't miss watching tv of an evening. I'm also single which helps.

contentedsoul · 07/03/2020 21:02

I'm literally climbing the walls. So utterly fucking sick of the dark evenings. Every year it seems to last longer than the previous...hate it.

Fed up of listening to music
TV is ridiculous...anyone else noted that as TV's get bigger the quality of the programmes gets worse. Prime time telly is shit!

During light evenings I'm hardly ever in, in the garden, out walking...in fact anything to be outside.

TacosTuesday · 07/03/2020 21:10

Board game, totally geeky but we love a game - Scrabble/cards or a fab train game called Ticket to Ride. If on my own, a jigsaw is very relaxing.

Littlepeak34 · 07/03/2020 21:14

I understand wanting to be healthier but you say drinking and chatting makes you happy and helps you unwind. Why stop?

Doesn’t sound like you do it excessively, just on a weekend, getting a little tipsy...doesn’t seem bad to me.

JaceLancs · 07/03/2020 21:36

Knitting
Crochet
Jigsaws
Card games
Board games
Puzzles

dementedma · 07/03/2020 21:40

Jealous of all your busy evenings. DH watches football. Every night. I go to bed by 9pm bored. Every night. I read, have baths, MN. Still fucking boring though.

notacooldad · 07/03/2020 21:45

Bake

If it's not raining go for a walk, usually about 7 miles, circular from our house.

userxx · 07/03/2020 21:49

I'm with you. It's so grim.

Absoluteunit · 07/03/2020 22:28

OH works away for months at a time so it's usually just me in the evenings once DD is in bed.

On nights I'm not studying (distance learning student):

Long bath with a book and face mask
Netflix
Audiobook/podcasts
Early night and sleep!

I'm so rock and roll! Grin

I don't drink at home anymore because OH is teetotal and it's no fun on my own. I feel much better for it.

LangSpartacusCleg · 09/03/2020 02:40

@inwood having just moved house, the fuck ton of personal admin includes notifying friends and family of change of address, notifying banks, car insurance, health insurance, pensions, subscriptions, memberships etc of change of address, setting up utility suppliers, cancelling satellite tv, finding out how to change car registration and get a new driving license, checking condition report of the new flat, registering with doctor, getting old records from old doctor (various medical issues), and to top it all off dealing with a law suit against my husband.

Not normal life admin at all! 😂
