To think world book day is meant to be about books not any old fancy dress

I don’t get world book day costumes tbh. I thought the whole idea was to choose a character from a book you like and then dress as them- which I have seen some of today. But most of the pics I have seen on Facebook are nothing to do with books and are just tenuous fancy dress (batman, Disney princesses etc) - I mean you could argue that there are Disney princess books I guess?!

Aibu or just being grumpy!!! Grumpy probably!!

We didn't dress up at my school.
All the children brought in their favourite book (or chose one from the library) and we did all sorts of lovely book-related events that actually promote the love of reading.
Therefore:

  • no tenuous link costumes
  • no children whose parents can't be arsed/can't afford a costume/don't read the newsletter turning up in school uniform and feeling crap all day
  • no children off the walls all day because they're in non uniform
  • no children stressed out because it was out of routine
  • no hassle for parents.
We still had complaints that we weren't doing costumes though. Dammed if you do...🤷🏼‍♀️

Ours has been postponed until tomorrow. DC has picked a character from a favourite book, and a costume has been cobbled together from clothes in the wardrobe and some charity shop finds. The clothes can be worn again in different combinations as everyday wear, which is great.
I think they may also need to take a favourite book in, but this hasn't been confirmed.

My DS is an absolute bookworm & is devouring the Percy Jackson/Gods of Olympus/Trials of Apollo series but HATES dressing up.

Luckily our school is doing pyjamas & bedtime story instead of a book character.

To be honest I'm not keen on kids going as disney characters etc but I can understand why they do.

exactly this attitude that puts people off reading and getting involved in discussion about it. If you’re not reading War and Peace, why even bother.

Who is the arbiter of what’s literature

FFS. Obviously I was talking about the written word as opposed to films or tv shows. I wasn’t talking about high art.
I don’t have any “ attitude” other to think Disney does films not books.

Honestly, have people never heard of the Grimm brothers? Or Andrew Lang? Do they not read fucking books?

All these threads moaning about 'Disney princesses' just shows the paucity of the cultural lives of the OPs tbh.

MintyMabel · 05/03/2020 19:49

Disney does films not books

Disney does films written from books.

TiredMum10 · 05/03/2020 19:52

Honestly it's just another pointless day and most stressful for parents. I could care less what someone dressed their child up in. Some people are just making it through the day without this nonsense on top. And it doesnt have any bearing on them as parents in encouraging their child to read.

lazylinguist · 05/03/2020 19:58

Yes it is supposed to be about books. But even in the most aspirational and bookworm-filled families, any sensible parent surely knows that what you wear on World Book Day neither proves nor fosters a love of reading. It's a pain in the arse for parents and a dress-up day for kids.
