To think world book day is meant to be about books not any old fancy dress

I don’t get world book day costumes tbh. I thought the whole idea was to choose a character from a book you like and then dress as them- which I have seen some of today. But most of the pics I have seen on Facebook are nothing to do with books and are just tenuous fancy dress (batman, Disney princesses etc) - I mean you could argue that there are Disney princess books I guess?!

Aibu or just being grumpy!!! Grumpy probably!!

this again?

bananaskinsnomnom · 05/03/2020 17:39

Naaaah I get you! Our Book Day has several Elsa’s and Spider-Man’s - this is early years for me though so we also had lots of Peter Rabbits, Gruffalos (God bless the inventor of the onesie) a couple of Paddingtons.....

Trouble is costumes are time, effort and above all money, so parents see the costume they already own and that makes it easier. But I totally get your point and I agree.

littleblackdress04 · 05/03/2020 17:40

Sorry, has it been done before 🙈

Oh go away 🙄

bananaskinsnomnom · 05/03/2020 17:41

Also to add, I personally reuse the same book day costume frequently, so will most likely be the exact parent I tut about now and will throw my child into a costume we already own and find a matching book !

Notopel · 05/03/2020 17:42

I imagine, like most parents, they were tired of having to produce yet another outfit for something at school and just reached for whatever they had in the wardrobe.

We’re in Wales and it seems like there have been eleventy billion St David’s day events.

ScottishStottie · 05/03/2020 17:42

Came on to post this exact thing!!

Disney princess/superheroes are grey area as there are kids books involving these characters.

But on facebook today i have seen top gun pilots, as well as some kid dressed up as the guy from peaky blinders...

LadyFarnborough · 05/03/2020 17:42

My child's nursery set the theme of 'Disney' so not much I can do about that.

littleblackdress04 · 05/03/2020 17:43

@ghostyslovesheets Sorry!! Didn’t see that one- same point!!

I have seen kids dressed as Joe Wicks tho with his cook books which is quite funny

Disney princesses are all based on traditional fairy tales. Loosely, perhaps, but still it’s fair game for WBD. Super heroes are in comic books. They count as books too, don’t they?

littleblackdress04 · 05/03/2020 17:45

Judging by the replies on the other post, it’s not a popular view 😂

Elsa's and Spiderman? Goodness me. Anyone would think the latter had been in print since 1962 and the latter based on a Hans Christian Andersen book.
Despicable. Clearly all children should be dressed as Hamlet.

picklebarrelfalls · 05/03/2020 17:46

I think the whole thing should be ditched. Doesn't encourage anyone to read at all.
I'm a stressed mum, and just like everyone else, I try to find the quick, easiest solution which is whatever you can and sod wether it's actually a book!
It's a waste of my time and money and if no benefit to anyone.

AdobeWanKenobi · 05/03/2020 17:46

latter = former

Herpesfreesince03 · 05/03/2020 17:47

Not everyone can afford a brand new costume of a book character every year for all of their children. Most of the girls in my school were princesses and most of the boys were marvel characters because parents used what they had at home. The kid’s all still had a lovely day. What difference does it make to you, anyway?

littleblackdress04 · 05/03/2020 17:48

@picklebarrelfalls it’s a money making scheme for the shops too. More costumes than books in Asda

My son went as a book character but that was because he enjoys dressing up and we already had it. I wouldn't have bought or made something special. The impact on the environment from these days must be terrible and everyone getting a new outfit for each theme day at school would make it worse.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 05/03/2020 17:50

I wish they’d ditch the whole dressing up aspect of it and make the whole day book/reading centred fun. They could have book swaps. Charades but the title has to be a book. Etc. There’s so much they could do instead of just dressing up.

JennysTailor · 05/03/2020 17:52

The whole thing is an unnecessary pain in the arse.

StillSurviving · 05/03/2020 17:52

I hate dressing up for world book day. It’s just more homework for parents... would much rather the school did stuff related to books. Get each class to write a chapter, some to illustrate, prepare a 1min summary of your favourite book and tell the child sitting next to you, write a different ending to a fairy tale, spend 10 mins each day that week doing quiet reading in class. There’s lots of stuff that can be done that is more related to books and reading. Bah humbug !

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 05/03/2020 17:53

And I’ve never bought a costume for wbd. Today Ds went as himself as he has a personalised book from my sister. Previously he has gone as horrid henry, diary of a wimpy kid etc. All just normal kids clothes.

littleblackdress04 · 05/03/2020 17:53

@juan I agree. It’s just stressful and I just don’t see the point if it’s wearing the same thing every year. I saw a good idea on twitter where kids had to draw a character on a white T-shirt and wear that- much better idea & means the kids are being creative

OP posts:
MamaFlintstone · 05/03/2020 17:58

I completely agree. I can’t be arsed making a costume myself and it was hard to actually find one from a book in the shops, except Harry Potter related ones.
