...to buy for the parents instead?

A close colleague of mine has just had a darling DS - 2 weeks old! They have been overwhelmed by gifts for the little boy from generous friends and family.

Another colleague and I are visiting her in a couple of weeks time and we were discussing a present for the baby, but we've now thought it might be nice to get her/her and partner a gift instead? We both put into the work present for the DS, so it's not like we haven't got him anything!

So my question is, would you see that as odd, and if not, do you have any suggestions?!

I think that’s a lovely idea.

LukeSkywalkingOnTheseHaters · 05/03/2020 11:36

Get something token for the baby, even if its a pack of grows for a slightly older age (3-6 months).

Gifts for parents have always been well received in my experience. Nice flowers, chococlate, some cheeky alcohol

TokyoSushi · 05/03/2020 11:37

Yep, lovely idea!

LukeSkywalkingOnTheseHaters · 05/03/2020 11:38

Just to add, I recommend slightly older age stuff for baby as no doubt they have been inundated with newborn and 0-3 stuff

platform9andthreequarters · 05/03/2020 11:41

Best present we had was cook vouchers! It was for number 3 so we had tonnes of clothes already but I would have still found it amazing for number 1. The effort of cooking and preparing food is such a pain in the early days.

JonnyPocketRocket · 05/03/2020 11:44

My best presents were from a friend who put a bunch of home cooked food in the freezer, then sent me upstairs for a nap while she sat with the baby for a couple hours.

TokyoSushi · 05/03/2020 11:46

Just a thought about the older age stuff - be careful what you get!

DD was born in June, I got lots of lovely things like summer dresses in 6-9 months, it doesn't always quite work...

RhymingRabbit3 · 05/03/2020 11:47

Yes a great idea, although I would probably stick in a tiny gift for the baby also - bibs or something maybe.

My favourite gift with a new baby would be Cook vouchers.

Eliza72 · 05/03/2020 11:49

My friends little girl on her first birthday I bought her one of those fab slow cookers where you pre fry in the same bowl. My friend was really chuffed, there was truly nothing her little girl needed and I guess she will get to eat the results so was partly for her lol!

Windyatthebeach · 05/03/2020 11:49

Costa card or take away voucher...

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 05/03/2020 11:50

Definitely food or cook vouchers. Always goes down a treat.

ParkheadParadise · 05/03/2020 11:51

When dd2 was born , DH's PA brought a bottle of champagne and a box of fancy cupcakes with dd's name on them. They were delicious.

LiGlitterBug · 05/03/2020 11:51

It’s a lovely idea, I really appreciated my friend buying me a copy of ‘The Little Book of Self-Care for New Mums’ and a lovely hand cream when I’d had my first born.

We also got some Cook vouchers which saved a lot of hassle in the first few weeks, but not sure if their delivery covers every location, so worth a check first.

I was snacking like crazy in the first few weeks, so nice biscuits or chocolates would also likely go down well. My mum also brought by a load of fruit which stopped me living entirely on sugar.

Like a PP said, you could always bring a token gift for the baby- they can never have too many muslins!

DameOfGroans · 05/03/2020 11:51

My cousin is due next month and I plan to get her some gin. And maybe some baby wipes.

MUMUNATORR · 05/03/2020 11:53

I was thinking that you should give them something that they enjoy like chocolate for the parents or even a few meals, homemade or shop brought. If you dont know what they like to eat then maybe a food voucher.
If you were thinking something more sentimental then maybe a charm for something like a pandora bracelet marking the baby's birth. Perhaps it would be nice to give her a voucher for a beauty treatment.

Daftodil · 05/03/2020 11:57

Yes, nice idea.

Maybe get a gift card for your local supermarket and they can put it towards a weekly shop (useful when stat mat pay kicks in!) Or they can use it online for a toy for baby, nappies, formula etc or can buy an appliance like a slow cooker or something they may need.
Chocolate/flowers/wine are also nice.

Alsohuman · 05/03/2020 11:59

We sent a week’s worth of Cook meals to a close family member, they went down well in both senses! On a smaller scale, nice hand cream is a much appreciated gift for a new mum.

Wixi · 05/03/2020 12:06

A lovely idea. When I had my DD my parents bought me a gift as well as gifts for my DD. It's nice to be thought of as well, as it was quite a trauma for the parents too.

WombatStewForTea · 05/03/2020 12:06

My friend turned up with a crate (massive tesco delivery one - no idea how she got it Grin) filled with bits: cake, flapjacks, breakfast bars, crisps, energy drinks, magazines, prosecco etc.
It was amazing!

Teacaketotty · 05/03/2020 12:07

I think that’s a great idea we would have really appreciated, even a just eat voucher or something would go down well!

Dollygirl2008 · 05/03/2020 12:07

Wow! Some great ideas - will definitely look at Cook vouchers as that seems a popular one, and not something I've heard of!

And I take on board the token gift for the baby - good thinking!

When I left my work to go on maternity leave my colleagues decided to give me a present for me. I was so disappointed, all I wanted was baby things to coo over.

Dollygirl2008 · 05/03/2020 12:17

Maisieme, we got her lots of baby things from work - this is an additional, personal present from myself and another colleague

Mmm the cook thing looks absolutely gorgeous, and I'd like these myself!!!!

We got my boss Just Eat vouchers and him and his wife loved that idea

MrsKappa · 05/03/2020 12:32

My mil gave me a box of goodies just for me - some toiletries she knew I liked, a large floaty top and my favourite chocolates. She said i shouldn't be forgotten amongst all the baby items. It was very appreciated!!
