...to buy for the parents instead?

A close colleague of mine has just had a darling DS - 2 weeks old! They have been overwhelmed by gifts for the little boy from generous friends and family.

Another colleague and I are visiting her in a couple of weeks time and we were discussing a present for the baby, but we've now thought it might be nice to get her/her and partner a gift instead? We both put into the work present for the DS, so it's not like we haven't got him anything!

So my question is, would you see that as odd, and if not, do you have any suggestions?!

COOK vouchers or actual meals will go down a treat. Someone gave us a load for DD and I honestly think it was the best present we had! Also, a friend gave me a hamper of soft cheeses, and salami, Parma ham etc..all things you can't have when you're pregnant, it was a amazing. (Can you tell I may be slightly obsessed with food Grin).

Sorry I meant someone gave us a load when I had DD.

My friends little girl on her first birthday I bought her one of those fab slow cookers where you pre fry in the same bowl. My friend was really chuffed, there was truly nothing her little girl needed and I guess she will get to eat the results so was partly for her lol!

That's fucking awful tbh. Presents are supposed to be something for the recipient. Something special or that they might not buy for themselves. Not just things they need. Giving a slow cooker to someone on their kids' first bday is more than odd.

I always get gifts or food for parents. Either a hamper of snacks, a nice water bottle, a book, pizza or ready meals, bottle of fizz etc...
Or takeaway/cook vouchers.
Even when I've done collection for vouchers for parents I put a note to say it doesn't need to be spent on the baby.
I think it's far more practical and appreciated.

Lovely idea! The alternative would be practical baby gifts, a friend got me bigger sized nappies, calpol, teething gel, nipple cream, infacol, baby shampoo, etc... it was a truly amazing gift.

Parent gift wise, takeaway vouchers are always very well received, maybe even a voucher for a one off cleaner (just stress in the cars it's not because you think they have a dirty house!!). A homemade voucher for some babysitting time, or an IOU for coffee and cake.

We did this for friends. Bought their baby a baby grow (because it was so cute I couldn’t resist), their older child a cookie and a small gift so she didn’t feel left out, then took round a box of food. Thinks like crackers and nice cheeses, chutneys, a pie, chocolates and posh fizzy. They loved it.

ichifanny · 05/03/2020 16:48

Just eat or deliveroo vouchers

40andfeelingit · 05/03/2020 16:48

One of my friends came round with a gift for the baby and a M&S dine-in deal for us - food and wine - was very much appreciated!

Yummymummy2020 · 05/03/2020 16:50

Not odd at all my friends did that for me and it made my day and meant the world to me. I got new pjs, nice bubble bath and face masks and a nice conditioner and loads of sweet treats to keep me going! I will always do this for pregnant friends now as it made me so so happy!!!

When my friends’s daughter had a baby I gave a small gift for the baby and some cash for the Mum for her on spend on herself when she was back on her feet.

FlowerArranger · 05/03/2020 17:08

THE best present I received was 3 bottles of Fenjal and a scented candle...

FlowerArranger · 05/03/2020 17:10

A bottle of Cointreau would have been very nice too Grin

I always take cake & lavender bath salts (great for sore lady bits &/or wounds for new mums. Eating cake in the bath always felt like such a big treat when I had a newborn so I insist all the new mums I know try it 😂
