Its come to that dreaded time again switching gas and electric, currently paying £70 for both with british gas, they want to put it up again (it was £62 at the start of the plan)

Iv gone on uswitch and E.on want £54 a month! How is that even possible?

GinDrinker00 · 04/03/2020 09:04

Because it’s an estimate.

gamerchick · 04/03/2020 09:04

Well it won't be that for long. That's cheap gas and electric.

I pay 122 quid at the minute. I'm expecting it to go up soon

Singlebutmarried · 04/03/2020 09:04

We got a message from bulb the other day saying ther we’re knocking £105 per year off our bill.

So there must be something afoot in the energy market.

Sirzy · 04/03/2020 09:05

If you have provided accurate figures of your usage then it will probably be around that point, but may change as times goes on dependant on actual useage - obviously you need to check that the rate is fixed etc before you switch

GoldLeafTree · 04/03/2020 09:07

I've been with Bulb for 6 months and I'm paying £54-£58 a month for gas and electric in a 2 bed house. With Eon I was paying £80!

Lunafortheloveogod · 04/03/2020 09:08

It’ll be an estimated figure, also based on a deal or tariff that’ll last x amount of time. To be fair Eon are the cheapest for us but we’re still £80pm. And they were high way robbers out of tariff over £100pm unless it was a heat wave.. so I’d double check any maths.

HJWT · 04/03/2020 09:10

This is what the website says! I would ring but probably take half an hour to get through 🥴

I put in what I use on the website from my current tariff on british gas! We use a lot of electric not much gas. We are in a new build and its always hot!

Your best bet is to use that to compare the daily fee and unit price for both fuels to the tarriff your currently on/being moved to.

ThePittts · 04/03/2020 09:21

Can you look at the unit rate you are being offered with EON and compare with your current unit rate, that will give you more of an idea if you will be saving money by moving suppliers, rather than their suggested monthly figure.
Gas prices have recently reduced, I have had an update from bulb as well.

Biffsboys · 04/03/2020 09:21

We were given a great deal from SSE , however they had seriously underestimated our usage and we ended up owing a few hundred pounds ...

Feedthispiggychoc · 04/03/2020 09:22

We switched from British Gas at £90 per month to eon at £44 per month. When we left BG we were in credit by £400 so just shows how much we were being overcharged Only downfall is we had a smart meter with BG & when we switched, eon said we have to wait until end of 2020 to have a smart meter again. Something about it not being transferable at the moment

tiggerkid · 04/03/2020 09:23

I recently switched to Eon and now pay £150 per month for both gas and electricity. NPower wanted nearly £300 for the same amount of energy used. So, yes, it is worth shopping around and, from time to time switching providers!

Nearlyalmost50 · 04/03/2020 09:38

I am with Bulb and they are by far the cheapest I was with- like the last poster, I was with NPower and their bills were huge. We immediately saved loads. Shopping around and switching is definitely worth it in the energy market.

FedUpWithItAllWeep · 04/03/2020 09:41

Its actually super easy to work out for yourself. Just take last years consumption in kwh and then times by the unit rate. Add on the annual standing charge and then divide by 12. Then you'll know of Its right or not!

ffswhatnext · 04/03/2020 09:47

I change suppliers every year or so depending on the deal.
I always input the actual usage not how much I spend, and I've saved money when I've switched. Plus cashback.

When I first moved here I was with BG. Second-year, I changed and saved a small fortune. The refund paid for about half that year with the new company.

PinkMonkeyBird · 04/03/2020 09:50

I'm with Bulb and pay £50 per month (just reduced my DD on their recommendation) combined for Gas & Elec. I've been very happy with them, they are definitely the cheapest so far!

BarbaraofSeville · 04/03/2020 09:58

I think prices might have dropped a little in the last few months and I also heard Martin Lewis saying this on his podcast some time recently.

We've just switched from Eon to Avro and the monthly price, is about £20 pm cheaper on the new tariff. We were paying £97 pm to Eon and this built up about £150 in credit in the year that we were with them, that I'm waiting for them to refund.

Avro have asked for £76 pm, which is probably about right plus they don't do smart meters so won't endlessly pester us like Eon did.

MintyMabel · 04/03/2020 10:06

EON have consistently been the cheapest supplier for us. We’ve used them for fourteen years and each year when I check, they are the cheapest, sometimes by quite a lot. They also return any over paid direct debit at the end of the year without any hassle. They seem to always be the last to raise prices. My current deal is coming to an end and they emailed to say I could get a cheaper deal with them if I switched to a certain tariff. Everything is managed online and you can even adjust your direct debit on the website.

I’ve used BG, NPower, Scottish Hydro in years gone by and the level of service was shit compared to EON.

And no, before anyone pipes up, I don’t work for them, I’m just a satisfied customer who would recommend them to anyone.

hiredandsqueak · 04/03/2020 10:11

I swap every year at the end of the contract, currently pay £80.60pm for gas and electric for a large 4 bed with Npower, last year i was with Sainsburys paid £85pm but swapped when it was going to go up to £90pm. I will check with uswitch when current contract ends and swap if necessary again. It pays to switch.

Hoppinggreen · 04/03/2020 10:13

They do that and then you end up with a minus and then they put it up massively
Have a look at Octopus energy

StarUtopia · 04/03/2020 10:18

All these people with cheap bills! HOW?!

I'm paying £120 a month DD and it needs to go up to £160! (gas and electric)

4 bed semi with 2 adults 2 children

I just cannot see how £50 a month is even slightly doable?

Spam88 · 04/03/2020 10:21

Eon were the cheapest for us this time as well - both standing charge and unit rate were significantly cheaper than we were paying last year with npower.

BarbaraofSeville · 04/03/2020 10:22

The average bill is about £100 pm, so £120 isn't far above than, even £160 considering that you have a larger than average property.

People paying significantly less than that will be using less energy, either because their property is smaller, better insulated or they restrict heating or use of energy intensive appliances like tumble dryers.

Bookoffacts · 04/03/2020 10:23

I pay £63 a month. 3 bed terrace house with 3 people, and heating on at least 18 degrees 24/7. Washing machine and tumble dryer usually 2x a day. And all usual rest.

Previously paid £82 per month but changed supplier to cheapest. Not heard of them something green but I chose as cheapest. No advertising. No big multi million offices?
Same gas and electricity. Exactly the same.
