Its come to that dreaded time again switching gas and electric, currently paying £70 for both with british gas, they want to put it up again (it was £62 at the start of the plan)

Iv gone on uswitch and E.on want £54 a month! How is that even possible?

Worth checking octopus as from memory there is no early exit fee.

LittleRootie · 04/03/2020 11:21

I pay £63 a month. 3 bed terrace house with 3 people, and heating on at least 18 degrees 24/7. Washing machine and tumble dryer usually 2x a day. And all usual rest.

I have no idea how that's possible! Is it averaged out over the year?

I live in a 2 bed ground floor flat, we only put heating on after 5pm til around 11pm. Couple of laptops, not many gadgets, laundry couple times a week, no tumble dryer. Our last bill was £127 for the month.

gingersausage · 04/03/2020 11:23

I though my bill was pretty low at £78 a month for both in a 3 b/r terrace and I’m a switcher-offer jumper-wearer, so I’m quite envious of people who have their heating on 24/7 and pay £50-£60. Envy

I use MSE energy club and Octopus is consistently cheapest for me. As soon as it isn’t I’ll swap. I wouldn’t go back to big 6 ever though, N-Power especially are a bloody nightmare.

saraclara · 04/03/2020 11:27

Another one who belongs to the Martin Lewis energy club. They let me know whenever I'm paying more than I need to be, and I swap regularly.

My house is well insulated so my bills are low, even though I like a warm well lit house. If you're in an older less well insulated place, your bills might well be four times mine - which is an even better reason to join the energy club and keep the costs down as much as you can.

grandmasterstitch · 04/03/2020 11:28

We don't have gas but pay £24 a month with bulb for electric. We use about £26 but thanks to £50 referrals we're in credit

saraclara · 04/03/2020 11:29

Just checked. Mine is £75 a month for a four bed detached. But I'm in all day, keep my thermostat at 20deg, and my friends laugh at my house looking like Blackpool Tower when they pass by at night!

LittleRootie · 04/03/2020 11:30

Yes, my flat is the bottom of an old house, terrible insulation but still - our usage is low compared to other examples here, no way I would keep the heating on all day!

I'm with Bulb, happy with them, but bills are still a lot in winter i just assumed it's a fact of life

handbagsatdawn33 · 04/03/2020 11:31

I'm another fan of Moneysavingexpert.
I've just changed from Bulb to Avro because that nice Mr. Lewis suggested it.
I know my consumption, & payment for both fuels has gone from £70 to £58 p.m.

bellabasset · 04/03/2020 11:31

I use MSE and am with BG. I've just changed to a lower tariff with BG partway through winter . Rates vary where you live though. My current tariff is £62 a month based on 9500kw gas and 2600 electric.

I went through the MSE site and the rate was changed within 10 days.

BiBiBirdie · 04/03/2020 11:31

Go with Bulb
We tried British Gas ( awful money grabbing frauds), NPower (beyond useless and wanted £185 a month with no reasonable explanation when we had been paying £60 a month and were in credit) and SSE (worst customer service ever, rude, disinterested and contradictory fuckers).
Bulb charge me £32 a month duel fuel. £32! And we are in credit to the tune of £395. They're cheaper as they don't send our paper bills, they have a basic website and they use the cheapest, greenest gas.

Heartbeeps · 04/03/2020 11:32

We’ve also just switched to E.on. Electric only and will be saving 10p a day standing charge and about 3p per unit. Should have done it much sooner!

pumpkinpie01 · 04/03/2020 11:32

Mine is £145 a month, N Power. Just been on compare the market and N Power are coming up the cheapest but loads less than what I'm paying now, thats from putting in my annual consumption.Makes no sense, going to call them.

ElGuardiandenoche · 04/03/2020 11:33

Another one here with Bulb. I was Eon and was paying £210 a month and owed them money. So I did a price comparison on Martin Lewis Energy Club and it came up with Bulb at £157 a month. Eon wouldn't let me change as I owed them money, so I borrowed the £400 from my Credit Union and paid them off and changed to Bulb. I set the repayments to £175 as I didn't trust their figures. Six months later I had an excess in the account and I had an email from them to say that there had been a reduction in the price and they reduced my DD to £150. Now 18 months on my DD is set at £112 a month. They've been brilliant to deal with and upfront. We've had slight increases and decreases along the way and I've been very happy with them.

MaudesMum · 04/03/2020 11:34

Another MSE Energy Club member here, currently on a green tariff with British Gas, which is currently charging £60 a month for a smallish terrace. They flag up when its time to change, and every time I've done so it has been a smooth process. Only disadvantage is not able to have a smart meter, but presumably at some point one will be introduced which can switch from company to company...

GiveHerHellFromUs · 04/03/2020 11:35

They'll give you that price then in 2 months tell you you're using much more than agreed and that they're increasing your tariff

Musicaltheatremum · 04/03/2020 11:38

I use flipper...they automatically look for good rates and change you and liaise with the energy companies when they are being idiots!

Greenkit · 04/03/2020 11:41

I have said before I'm with utility warehouse, I pay £145 per month for the following...

Gas
Elec
Broadband
Buildings/contents insurance
2xmobile phones (£15each)

BarbaraofSeville · 04/03/2020 11:45

Bulb charge me £32 a month duel fuel. £32! And we are in credit to the tune of £395

Are you sure? Over what time period? You'd have to use absolutely no fuel at all and it would still take over a year to build that credit up.

I've just compared the unit prices and daily standing charge and for me, Avro is cheaper than Bulb.

BiBiBirdie · 04/03/2020 11:53

@BarbaraofSeville We have a credit with Bulb as if you get others to sign up via a code they reward you with £50.
Also we have a tiny little house, we are out all day and we only have the gas on for an hour tops a day. Due to the years of being with expensive suppliers we got very used to making do with jumpers and slankets and we are very aware of climate change and not being wasteful.
It started off at £59 a month and they let us out it down. I do add a little extra a month on in summer to build it up on case of catastrophe in winter.

Bookoffacts · 04/03/2020 11:53

I do have a well insulated house with cavity wall insulation and loft insulation. It was great when they did it, same day, it was like house had put thick woolen jumper on.
Gas is for heating and hot water. Not much hot water as dishwasher, washing machine and shower make their own hot water. So only kitchen and bathroom sink. Shower rather than bath. Used at least 3+ times a day, different people ☺
Lots of electricity.
I'm pleased that lots of pp also have low bills as I was beginning to worry. I've paid £63 per month for over 2 years now and have regular (6 monthly?) readings. No idea what useage or itemised cost is. It's fixed cost and I just use it abundantly. Should look. ☺

Daffodil55 · 04/03/2020 11:56

Good thread as I just made a change yesterday!

I was paying £108 monthly for electricity for a long time (am all electric in a smallish 2bed property) with Scottish Power. Previously on standard rate I have now signed up for fixed price for 24months. My payments are now reduced to £72 a month so a nice saving but I am not daft and don't expect the bills to stay as low as that indefinitely. I reckon if I can pay that for even a few months then the saving will easily cover any increase which will inevitably happen with usage and cold weather etc. later in the year but the next few months are hopefully the warmer ones and I should not be in for a shock with my direct debits.

I am at home quite a lot as work from home part time during the day. I happened to mention to a friend that I use my laptop for several hours a day. She was aghast and said my electricity bill will be huge because of that. Errr no because on full charge I get many hours battery life and she struggled to comprehend this. oh dear

MummyJasmin · 04/03/2020 11:57

I'm with Bulb & live in a modest 2 bed house. I paid around £68 this month and £64 last month - gas and elec. Granted it's an expensive time of the year and central heating is on when we're in (except through the night) however husband I both work f/t...

I'm surprised how people manage to pay £50/month or less this time of the year!

BarbaraofSeville · 04/03/2020 11:59

BiBiBirdie

OK, I didn't know that, but it's not something I could be bothered with or something I'd want to rely on to make sure I paid the best price.

I'd rather just sign up with a cheap supplier with a stated price, rather than pay a higher price and rely on that sort of arrangement to get the price down.

OldEvilOwl · 04/03/2020 12:19

Sorry to hijack the thread, but can you change suppliers at any time, or is there a 12 months or whatever wait before you can swap?

stuntbanana · 04/03/2020 12:30

Surely it's to hook you in? I'm with eon and just paid my 1/4 year bill of just under £300 with meter reading that's £100 per month for small 4 bed house , with just 2 adults mostly out through day ,
