To think 11.30pm is not the time for milkmen to deliver?

My milkman has been moving his delivery earlier and earlier. When I first signed up it was 4am but it's been before midnight the last two weeks and tonight 11.30pm for tomorrow's milk. AIBU to think this is ridiculous?

It'd probably get nicked in a lot of places.

And he'd piss people off who are trying to get to sleep.

amazedmummy · 03/03/2020 23:40

In the summer that won't be the freshest by morning.

Whyohwhymusti · 03/03/2020 23:40

Why does it matter? As long as you get your milk?

MarchSurprise · 03/03/2020 23:46

@WhyohwhymustI because in summer it will have been sat out there for 8 hours which defeats the object of getting fresh milk delivered and supporting local business. I would not have signed up had I have known it was going to be this time. I am a dog walker and it's the equivalent of me going to walk dogs that are supposed to be walked at lunchtime to break their day up right after their owner has left just so I can get an early finish- I just wouldn't do it.

I may also be a little annoyed that he's taken to not closing the gate behind him since delivering before midnight and so I have to go out to close it before letting the dog out.

At this time of year it won't go off overnight - not great in summer.
Noise of delivering a couple of bottles of milk can't be that loud? I have a recycling truck collecting bottles from the pub opposite - at 3am every morning.

Probably cheaper from the supermarket - no point in paying over the odds if it's not a service that you're happy with.

LellyMcKelly · 03/03/2020 23:55

It would be fresher from the supermarket. I wouldn’t want milk hanging about overnight, especially now the weather will be getting warmer.

PickAChew · 04/03/2020 00:02

At this time of year, it can freeze overnight.

HedghogDrama · 04/03/2020 00:02

Maybe it's that morning's delivery and he's running incredibly late :)

JayAlfredPrufrock · 04/03/2020 00:03

Nah I wouldn’t stand for that.

TiggeryBear · 04/03/2020 00:04

Perhaps the milkman has had his round made bigger owing to an increase in people wanting their milk in glass bottles & therefore in order to finish delivering before most people leave for work in the morning he has to start earlier. You'd be more pissed off if your milk was left at say 9am & left all day for you to bring in at 6pm when you get home.

BuffaloCauliflower · 04/03/2020 00:06

It’s fine, just get a little milk minder for the bottles to go on. Our delivery is about 1am and it was fine all summer

safariboot · 04/03/2020 00:07

YANBU.

It would be understandable if they'd told you they were switching to evening deliveries. But if it's supposed to be a morning delivery then 11:30 pm is ridiculous.

Vote with your wallet.

I remember getting a lift on the back of a milk truck one night when I literally couldn't walk another inch in high heels at about 4/5am in the morning. He gave me a life up the hill. I just couldn't walk anymore. Plus I was knackered (probably stoned as an ass) and just wanted to get into bed. He was nice if a little sceptical. Didn't allow me into his cab. I bounced merrily up the hill on the back of his truck.
Midnight? He's taking the piss?

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 04/03/2020 00:37

Many years ago I used to help out on a milk round. We had a large area to cover so obviously not everyone can get their milk delivered first thing in the morning. We only resorted to late night deliveries at Xmas when we had no choice, but unless its warm weather or its at risk of being stolen, your milk will be fine in a milk minder.

Fleetheart · 04/03/2020 00:37

It’s ridiculous; like having breakfast before you go to bed!

BiarritzCrackers · 04/03/2020 00:53

I had to stop sleeping with the window open as my neighbour started getting a milkman delivery, and he has the noisiest truck in the world, and comes at 2am! The whole idea used to be that milk deliveries were a) in the morning in time for breakfast and b) electric and silent, to not wake us all. But I guess as so few people have deliveries, floats are no longer practical.

I wouldn't fancy milk that's been sat out since midnight, especially in summer. I like the idea of milk deliveries though, but not from stinky, noisy truck man.

Allthecandles · 04/03/2020 00:56

Ha you’re not in Twickenham are you? I saw a milk truck at half 10 last night. The first one I’ve seen in years and though it was a weird tune to be out... unless this is a new thing for milkmen to deliver in the evening?!

MellowMelly · 04/03/2020 01:00

Mine used to deliver at about 4am, now it’s 11.30pm. He is pretty quiet to be fair. I have an insulated plastic milk caddy that I bought from him via the online service. It’s kept my two pints perfectly fine all last summer. I actually bumped into him the other night and asked why he was delivering at a different time now and he said staff shortages so he is now covering a wider area.

MellowMelly · 04/03/2020 01:01

@Allthecandles
Hilarious! I am in Twickenham Grin

Allthecandles · 04/03/2020 01:03

There you go then I saw your bottles on the way to you Grin. Weird small world!

StoppinBy · 04/03/2020 01:04

Just call the company and discuss it with them. I wouldn't be ok with that either.

UnexpectedItemInTheShaggingAre · 04/03/2020 02:36

But a milk kinder or cancel your delivery. Our service openly says they deliver between 11-7, and our Milkmen cover a massive area. It’s not like when you were a kid, and unigate had a depot in every town with a population of over 10,000.
If you’re not letting the dog out until after the delivery leave a little note for the milkman and ask him to shut the gate and bring the milk in before bed.
I’m suffering from pregnancy insomnia and I quite often go and grab my milk of lovely Stuart at 3am. It’ll keep until morning but if you’re up why not get it?

PenguinsOnParade · 04/03/2020 03:05

We cancelled ours even though we loved it because they kept delivering between midnight and 2am and our old house was on the route home for many people from a local nightclub so the days they delivered meant we had way too many deliveries stolen.

I WFH and have variable hours so was working on a project late one night and heard the delivery and then literally 10 minutes later heard the drunken idiots thinking they were quiet at trying to steal it. I may have chased them along the road barefoot and in my PJs because I was sick of it. Blush

Sparklfairy · 04/03/2020 03:13

Well if you're going out to shut the gate let the dog out anyway, just bring them in and put them in your fridge?

PyongyangKipperbang · 04/03/2020 04:18

Only on MN do you get a good dose of virtue signalling and whiilst still slagging off the poor sod who is trying to make a living by making you feel better about yourself Hmm
