I see a lot of comments about social class "la di daaa"

So I'm curious to which class you would all place yourselves?

Honestly?

I'm from a LC background but I'm wealthy now from my own hard work and live in a MN area from what I've gathered (Chiswick) but I definitely don't fit in with these "mums" I still prefer having my friends from council estates in hounslow over Smile

So what social classes are you from? And please be naice GrinWink

Have we had

"Lovely salt of the earth old money people in their banged up cars" yet?

Or even, "Nasty nouveau riche types in their newbuilds and white Range Rovers"?

Grin

Literally 2 posts up from yours.

Keep bashing out the tired old stereotypes MN. Never change.

Camomila · 03/03/2020 14:19

I'm foreign so don't quite fit in with all the English class markers but probably lower middle in England and in Italy too.
Nice and average Smile

leghairdontcare · 03/03/2020 14:20

My 99% effective technique for determining class:

If you don't know what class you are, you're middle class.

MissConductUS · 03/03/2020 14:27

In the US I'm upper middle class. The class system in the UK is sufficiently mysterious to me that I have no idea what I'd be there.

EmeraldShamrock · 03/03/2020 14:32

@OrganicSmorganic 🤣 On a previous class thread many pp's were trying the calculator to determine their class.
Some got highly annoyed when other's argued you could not change class by getting a degree and a better job. You might live a m.c lifestyle but unless brought up m.c. you're not m.c.

EmeraldShamrock · 03/03/2020 14:33

The class system in the UK is sufficiently mysterious to me that I have no idea what I'd be there Probably the same class.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 03/03/2020 14:34

MissConductUS
Its the same wealth inequality you'll be familiar with. But laid on top of an existing feudal system.
What we call "Upper Class" is the aristocracy and people related to aristocracy.
Our "Upper Middle" would encompass people who would be "Upper Class" in the US. ie: wealthy people, who's families have been wealthy for a while and who have access to elite culture and connections.
If your "Upper Middle" in the US I would guess your either "Upper Middle" or "Middle Middle" here.

Ethelfleda · 03/03/2020 14:34

The class system has been redefined by social scientists to include three measures:
Economic wealth (how much money/assets you own)
Cultural wealth (how you spend your downtime)
Social wealth (who your peers are)

There is a calculator online if you care.
I care. Why? Not because I can pay myself on the back for ‘levelling-up’ or whatever, but because we need to measure inequality in society for it to thrive. There are far too many people in what is now referred to as the ‘precariat’ who are balancing right on the edge and not making ends meet. This has an impact on their children and their children’s children. This needs to be measure so it can be a more balanced society.

The class system is not there as a way to massage the ego of the middle class.

Ethelfleda · 03/03/2020 14:37

If you have to work for your money then working class

What about pensioners? Or those on long term benefit as they’re unable to work?

drina27 · 03/03/2020 14:41

So I'm curious to which class you would all place yourselves?

Perhaps that requires to be rephrased. It doesn’t make sense.

drina27 · 03/03/2020 14:43

Genuine class is never about money.

ActualHornist · 03/03/2020 14:43

I don’t know. I care, in an abstract way.

On the Middle Class side: I have a degree and work a professional job earning £41k a year. My dad had a professional job also, and had lots of qualifications although not a degree. Mum was mainly a SAHM.

On the Working Class side: we live in a very deprived area, DH barely has GCSEs, and his family are all clear working class with no higher education.

We don’t have a lot of spare money but that’s due to debt.

As a family I’d say we were WC with MC pretensions Grin

drina27 · 03/03/2020 14:44

...you’re

MingVase · 03/03/2020 14:47

Genuine class is never about money.

What would non-'genuine' class be?

LaurieMarlow · 03/03/2020 14:51

What constitutes upper class in the state’s? Given the lack of aristocracy.

Frangipanini · 03/03/2020 14:53

What class are you if you are all fur coat and no knickers?
Thats me Wink

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 03/03/2020 14:54

LaurieMarlow I think its what we would think of as very established Upper Middle Class

drina27 · 03/03/2020 14:55

Elite.

drina27 · 03/03/2020 14:56

Does correctly using the apostrophe count?

PhilCornwall1 · 03/03/2020 14:57

LaurieMarlow · 03/03/2020 14:58

Does correctly using the apostrophe count?

Oh ffs, I’m on my phone and it autocorrected.

I didn’t bother redoing it, because I’m on MN, not in a fucking exam.

HTH.

Mintjulia · 03/03/2020 15:00

I’ve no idea. My grandfather was senior civil service, my dm privately educated, after her marriage we were free school meals family, poor as church mice. I’m a grammar school/graduate single mother with own home, no mortgage.

Heaven knows what that makes me Grin

drina27 · 03/03/2020 15:00

What would non-'genuine' class be?

Those who talk about how much money they earn, what this or that cost, people who flash money around or wear awful “designer” clothing.

Think Beckhams.

Linguaphile · 03/03/2020 15:01

In the US I'm upper middle class. The class system in the UK is sufficiently mysterious to me that I have no idea what I'd be there.

I know an American family who I think would describe themselves as upper middle or even upper class. They are very wealthy and you can tell that they are very impressed with themselves for having gotten a work placement in Europe for a few years. With the marked exception of the entrenched Ivy League elites, I think it the States it is almost completely down to money. Looking in from the outside, the family seem very crass nouveau riche to me. Spotless and perfectly decorated house, caked-on makeup, designer labels, flashy cars, lots of posed social media posts, and the mum once told me they like the idea of holidaying “anywhere the royals might go.” To me they seem very lower middle with money. 🙈

drina27 · 03/03/2020 15:02

LaurieMarlow

That wasn’t actually directed at you. Confused
I am using my iPhone as I type. HTH
