AIBU to be sad that stockings are seen as 'kinky' now? They'd be such a great tights alternative...

I hate hate hate tights. They're always slipping down, or getting laddered and it would just make so much sense to have stockings because just one can be thrown away and they're properly held up.

Not kinky. Imagine compression stocking...

stellabelle · 03/03/2020 03:40

I was wearing stockings when there was no alternative. Hated them ! Funny how things change and change again. And they have always been " naughty" to a certain part of the population - nothing new there either.

Juliette20 · 03/03/2020 04:34

God I love tights. I tried regular stockings in my 20s and could not get the hang of them at all, and concluded that suspenders were some kind of unnecessary torture device. Hold ups were never particularly comfortable and always expensive. When they fit perfectly I still got a ring around my legs from them. Even at the bottom end of the healthy BMI range, quite a lot created a sausage effect on my thighs. Nightmare.

I love the smooth line tights gives you under dresses, legs feel supported and tummy feels supported. Lycra is amazing.

wallflowersunited · 03/03/2020 04:40

They've been seen like that for years. Interesting first post.

Juliette20 · 03/03/2020 04:41

The advice on suspender belts sounds good, but it's such an expensive trial, when you can just buy three pairs of lovely, lovely supportive, comfortable, opaque tights for a fiver. And if they are supposed to fit like a bra - it's bad enough wearing one bra without wearing another one across my hips. Plus how do they accommodate any body fat at all? I'm a size 14 now, it really isn't going to work if I couldn't get on with them when I was a size 8.

ffswhatnext · 03/03/2020 12:45

Like a good fitting bra they aren’t uncomfortable.

One thing I love about the Waspies is they hide my belly. They give that tummy tuck thing like tights can do but without the need to constantly re-arrange.

Yes they can be expensive. Some of my favourites I’ve got on sale. And stockings I have cheap 3 packs to the more expensive £20+ a pair.

Plus when they ladder there’s not cutting involved to make a pair 🤣

Lordfrontpaw · 03/03/2020 12:47

My granny wore stockings. She would have been 106 this year...

Juliette20 · 03/03/2020 14:12

My bras fit well, but I can't say they are comfortable. They are not uncomfortable, but I prefer wearing a soft bra or cropped top with support if I can get away with it. I wouldn't want to wear another garment that is like a second bra. Tights really are comfortable though.

BarbedBloom · 03/03/2020 14:17

I wear snag tights as they don't slip or roll and are comfy. However I also sometimes wear stockings sometimes with certain outfits. I don't really care if people think they are kinky as they can't even see if I am wearing them. Anyway, what is wrong with sexy or kinky anyway?

Icecreamdiva · 03/03/2020 14:22

I was born in the early 60s so was around as women gradually switched from stocking and suspenders being the only hosiery available to wearing the new fangled tights. Tights are one of the many boons of modern life, especially since the introduction of Lycra. They are warm, stretchy and snug. You don’t have to wear horrible itchy suspenders. The don’t sag at the knee or go bunchy at the ankles. There’s no chance of a fastening going ‘ping’ at any moment. They don’t leave lines that show through your skirts. You don’t have to faff around finding a matching pair in the morning. Unlike hold ups there’s no chance of a pair of tights sliding down your leg as you run for a bus and they don’t leave unsightly welts across your thighs. I’m team tights all the way.

ffswhatnext · 03/03/2020 14:35

The thin ones Yea those can be uncomfortable. I’ve had a few of those. They can dig in, roll and twist far too easily.
A good fitting waspie style and I forget I’m wearing them. Helps that they have the stretch of support wear without the rigidness of a bra/corset.

And yea I know what you mean about bras. I quickly retain water and go from nice to get this bastard off.

The best way to try is next time your trying on bras, try them for size.

Stockings and suspenders are also fab for warm weather. Cover the legs but without the extra fabric!!

StarlightLady · 03/03/2020 19:51

Agree about the warmer weather.

For me it’s

Winter: opaque tights season (Autograph Seam Free);

Spring, autumn and some cooler summer evenings out: Stocking season;

Summer: Bare leg season.

And neither a well fitting bra or a well fitting suspender belt should be uncomfortable.

MadameMeursault · 03/03/2020 19:58

If you have two pairs of tights, each with one laddered leg, just cut the laddered legs off. You've then got two pairs of one-legged tights so wear them both together.

@BoreOfWhabylon are you insane? That would create a hideously sweaty gusset!! That being my main issue with tights. Stockings or hold-ups always for me.

BoreOfWhabylon · 03/03/2020 20:02

Depends on the denier how thick the gusset ends up.

MulticolourMophead · 03/03/2020 20:07

I'm 51 and wear proper stockings with a suspender belt. I don't like hold ups, but stockings don't give me a sweaty russet. They aren't your typical "sexy" items, being very functional.

I've not worn tights since I was a teen. I got the suspender belt from a website, either stockingshq, or stockings direct. One of the two, anyway. (Be aware one of them caters for stocking fetishists as well, with suspender belts having multiple straps.)

MulticolourMophead · 03/03/2020 20:10

I've noticed comments about being a bigger size and wearing suspenders. I'm a bigger person and my suspenders are comfortable. I don't have saggy stockings

dementedma · 03/03/2020 20:13

I like hold ups but have had too many experiences of them not holding up and slipping down to buy them any more. Shame.

MulticolourMophead · 03/03/2020 20:14

StarlightLady I think younger designers today are not designing suspenders properly, because they aren't considering the everyday practical use, but rather the "sexy" image.

StarlightLady · 03/03/2020 20:21

@MulticolourMophead - When it comes to sex, I take mine off. I’m not into dressing up games.

MulticolourMophead · 03/03/2020 20:24

Mine come off for bed, too. I wear them for practical reasons.

Lordfrontpaw · 03/03/2020 20:25

I suppose it would depend when/where you are having the sex.

ffswhatnext · 04/03/2020 09:28

Mine sometimes stay on for sex.

@MadameMeursault I was also thinking the same about the gusset. Plus a lot of females wear knickers. Come to think about it, I know a couple of females who wear tights under trousers. That's a lot of fabric. Anyone else itching at the thought of it Grin

CatChant · 04/03/2020 09:43

I now buy my suspender belts online from Stockings HQ. They are sturdy belts with metal catches and hooks, and can be bought without any scratchy lace. Nothing like the flimsy Ann Summers bits of nonsense.

I can't bear the feel of tights. I don't like thrush either so it's always stockings and a suspender belt under skirts in cold weather for me.

And yes, knickers go on over the belt.

Mysterian · 04/03/2020 09:52

Pop socks are the new kinky thing.

AIBU to be sad that stockings are seen as 'kinky' now? They'd be such a great tights alternative...
MulticolourMophead · 04/03/2020 10:16

You can get opaque stockings, if you need something thicker for winter.
