To leave teething baby?

DS is 3 months old and my mum has very kindly offered to look after him for a few hours tomorrow evening so me and DH can go out for a meal. My health visitor thought it would be good for me to have a little time away.
However DS has started teething. He's unsettled and I'm not sure that it would be kind for me to leave him. He knows my mum but I've pretty much always been with him. The odd occasion I haven't been DH has been with him. He's never not had a parent with him. Should I postpone until he's feeling better?

Go out enjoy yourself. There will always be something going on when they are little.

Kirkman · 29/02/2020 18:56

Is he old enough to have calpol?

I am not one for doing kids up for a night out, but using scalpel to settle for teething is quite normal. Or rather was. My youngest is 9. Alot could have changed since he was a child.

amazedmummy · 29/02/2020 19:04

@Kirkman he can have calpol I'm just trying other things where I can. He has a couple of teethers that go in the fridge that he seems to like. It's just awful to imagine him in pain and I'm not there.

Your mum will take great care of him, I’m sure she looked after you well as a child otherwise you wouldn’t want to leave him at all. Go and enjoy your meal Smile

GreenLeaf88 · 29/02/2020 19:14

You sound like a great mum and you deserve a few hours break! Honestly it will be ok!

user1493413286 · 29/02/2020 19:16

I would go; he isn’t ill and there will often be something

RogueV · 29/02/2020 19:18

Go for it. He’ll be in good hands.

Waveysnail · 29/02/2020 19:25

He's going to be doing lots of teething over the next couple of years. He just needs some cuddles and his granny can do that.

FloopDeLaPoop · 29/02/2020 19:53

I agree with the others, you should go!

Speaking from the lofty position of three kids in and will do anything to get away from them!

grudieabbey · 29/02/2020 20:04

GO! He is teething. He will be teething on and off for years. It’ll be good for you both to have a break. And it’s just teething. He isn’t in hospital with croup Smile Have a good time.

ClubfootMaestro · 29/02/2020 20:06

Definitely go!

Why are you trying not to use calpol? If he is in pain, let your mother use it so you can feel reassured he is not suffering while you’re out.

SamSeabornforPresident · 29/02/2020 20:08

Give him calpol if you think he's in pain. You'd take pain relief if you were in pain.

Strongmummy · 29/02/2020 20:10

Your baby will be teething ALOT!!! Just go. It’s very important you have time with your partner.

Ineedcoffee2345 · 29/02/2020 20:11

Go! He will be teething for the foresable. He will be in good hands with his nan

Pentium85 · 29/02/2020 20:12

I’ll go, they teeth forever!

Orgasmrendition · 29/02/2020 20:13

@Kirkman

Not sure how normal using a scalpel is for teething 😂
I'd personally stick with the calpol

Serenschintte · 29/02/2020 20:13

Go out and have a lovely time. Yes teething is uncomfortable but a bit of calpol will help a lot and will help him be more comfortable.
Calpol is awesome. Also you Mum gets lots of extra cuddles which she will like I would guess.

Mumofone1902 · 29/02/2020 20:15

Try Ashton's powder, it's amazing!

He will be okay for a few hours and you will feel alot better for it.

amazedmummy · 29/02/2020 20:15

Thanks, I know I'm being a bit PFB. I'm absolutely not against calpol at all. He can only have 2 doses a day so I don't want to rely on it too heavily. I also don't want to give him it unnecessarily. I have teething powders too that the health visitor recommended. I don't know if I'm just trying to find excuses.

i can't help with the thought of having time away from your son, it's hard for most of us.

In terms of teething, I find anbesol liquid rubbed on their gums a god send. It is suitable for babies. The liquid is a lot better than the gel I find. You have to ask for it over the counter. It's about £4/5 and lasts for ages.

I usually get that rubbed on my sons gums and it seems to give him some relief for a while, then at bedtime I do the same but give one dose of calpol aswell and it really seems to settle him to get him to sleep.

Also in terms of teethers I find the solid silicone ones great! Matchstick Monkey is good and Nuby do a selection too.

Good luck and hope you enjoy your night off if you go for it!

Pentium85 · 29/02/2020 20:30

Oh and just for the future, I find nurofen works a lot better for teething than calpol

amazedmummy · 01/03/2020 09:43

Thanks everyone, I'm about 90% sure we're going to go.
