To refuse to take the Watchtower and send Jehova's Witnesses away with parish magazine?

Elasticwoman · 05/09/2007 22:34

They said: hey, you've got to take a Watchtower, it was a deal!

But I welshed on it.

Was I unreasonable, and what do other people do when the God Squad come to their door trying to sell God to them?

Well, as someone who last year allowed my DS and his friends to disturb people by knocking on their doors and trying to exhort sweets in recognition of the fact that they were dressed as fictional ghoulies and ghosties, I don't feel able to be rude to JWs, or anyone else who comes to my door.

But I don't give them sweets.

lisad123 · 06/09/2007 14:50

Im never rude to the carol singers that come to my door or the kiddies at halloween, and I dont celebrate either, so ho hum

HorseyWoman · 06/09/2007 14:51

Yes, I would want to tell everyone possible, lisa. But it is inconceivable to me that anyone can know what will happen in the future.

MrsSpoon · 06/09/2007 14:55

I'm a JW, I like to believe I have fashion sense and I have a higher than average IQ (as tested by a link on MN so it must be true ).

I am ROFL @ SueBaroo, especially this comment:- "They believe that anyone who believes their teachings now will spend eternity on a paradise earth, hugging pandas and eating wheelbarrows full of butternut squash. In technicolour." You've obviously seen the literature!

lisad123 · 06/09/2007 14:56

It may well be inconceivable to you, but to them it truely isnt. I can promise they dont knock on your door to bother you, maybe next time just ask them to put you down as a "do not call" if it bothers you that much.

lisad123 · 06/09/2007 14:57

hello Mrspoon I thought that too
I had my iq tested too and can promise its not lower than normal, its higher

lisad123 · 06/09/2007 14:58

Off to pick up my DD from school, hope they havent unbrain washed her

krang · 06/09/2007 14:58

Entirely agree with madamz.

People can believe what they like, just don't foist it on me. I don't go knocking on JW doors armed with a copy of The God Delusion and until I do they can stay away from me and my family with their utterly ridiculous ideas.

mummydoit · 06/09/2007 14:59

I am always more than happy to inform them (or any other unwanted god-botherers) that I am an atheist. I follow it by saying 'thank you for your time' very politely, then closing the door very firmly. Unquiet Dad - why did you refer to it as 'the A-word'? Atheist is not a swear word!

HorseyWoman · 06/09/2007 14:59

lisa, what I am saying is, just because they believe they've had a preminition, doesn't mean I do or ever will.

Howdydoody · 06/09/2007 15:01

But have you and madamez told them not to call krang? As far as i know they are not into ESP so as Lisa said, tell them not to call. No big deal, dont know why people getting so wound up

krang · 06/09/2007 15:05

I didn't get the chance to tell them not to call, Howdydoody, as I mentioned earlier in the thread - they sneaked in through my back gate and deposited their magazine with its potentially extremely upsetting headline on my garden table without so much as a by-your-leave. Even the sodding pizza delivery leafleter doesn't go that far. I mean, they could at least have put it in the letter box like all the other rubbish.

UnquietDad · 06/09/2007 15:06

mummydoit - fair question.
Simply because I don't call myself an atheist unless pushed or pressed to define myself. I don't really like the word because it's one that forces me to define myself in term laid down by the existence of religion, whereas I'd like to see us losing the "necessity" for religion - to have a world without it. I realise this isn't going to happen, but I do my little bit.

And it's the intellectual level of the arguments (or lack of them) which I have a problem with, not particular individuals who may or may not be bright.

Maybe we could just confuse JWs and Trick or Treat - get kiddies in hallowe'en masks to read you bits of the Bible and give JWs sweets to make them go away.

krang · 06/09/2007 15:07

If they had done me the courtesy of actually asking if I wanted their magazine, I can assure you I would have told them to leave me alone. Most forcibly. I do not like those who attempt to force their religion on others. I do not like it one little bit.

krang · 06/09/2007 15:08

Oh yeah, and good for you mummydoit...nice to see another unashamed atheist...

madamez · 06/09/2007 15:11

ANd here's another unashamed atheist
People have no right to bother me when I'm at home. Unsolicited callers, like unsolicited mail, can be rejected either politely or rudely. It's their own fault for pestering in the first place.

madamez · 06/09/2007 15:13

Oh and the only one I ever actually hit I didn't know was a god-botherer. He ran after me in the street, yelling, when I ignored his initial approach (anyone who'se initial approach consists of 'Excuse me... Miss... Excuse me.. Lady is always going to be a pest). Then he grabbed my arm from behind and I'd shoved him into the wall before seeing that he was trying to give me some shitty church tract rather than actually trying to mug me.
But again, it serves him right.

MrsSpoon · 06/09/2007 15:23

UnquietDad you say:- "Most intelligent people want at least to argue, debate, engage." It may surprise you that it is for this very reason that many intelligent people end up becoming Jehovah's Witnesses because they are interested in arguing, debating and engaging and many find after going through everything trying to disprove it they believe.

Caroline1852 · 06/09/2007 15:32

The full text of chancellor Gordon Brown's Budget statement.

In this my eleventh Budget, my report to the country is of rising employment and rising investment; continuing low inflation, and low interest and mortgage rates; and this is a Budget to expand prosperity and fairness for Britain's families........
Mr Deputy Speaker, before 1997 we were bottom in the G7 for national income per head ..... Now we are second only to America.......
Mr Deputy Speaker, since 1997 inflation has averaged 1.5 per cent, half that of the previous decade......Britain's best inflation performance for a Century.

Our Budget for security and intelligence, which was just £1 billion in 2001, will now be for 2007-08, £2¼ billion.......

I can announce the inheritance tax allowance which is £285,000 today, and will rise in each year, will in 2010 be increased to £350,000........

I can confirm that places for Jehovah's Witnesses in Heaven will rise each year by 1.5 billion .... and their doorknocking activities will count as valid employment hours towards working tax credits....

LazyLinePainterJane · 06/09/2007 15:38

I agree with madamez.

It's easy to say "just tell them why you don't want them to call"....but it doesn't work like that. They keep coming back and won't take no for an answer because they arrogantly assume that if they keep on trying you will see that they are right and you are wrong. They think that persistence will mean you will be enlightened to god.

Anyone who does this deserves the title dumbfuck indeed.

lisad123 · 06/09/2007 15:43

"Anyone who does this deserves the title dumbfuck indeed" how rude

Howdydoody · 06/09/2007 15:43

What is a Marxist? A follower of Karl Marx

What is a Christian? A follower of Jesus Christ

JWs say that Jesus said to his followers to preach all over the earth - so that's what they do

Anyone who called themselves a Marxist and then didnt follow the teachings of Karl Marx would soon be called a hypocrite wouldnt they?

UnquietDad · 06/09/2007 15:46

Again - they aren't interested in having an intelligent debate. They just want to tell you they are right and pity you and read the bible at you.

krang · 06/09/2007 15:47

It's hard to have a rational debate with someone who follows a school of thought that interprets obscure doctrine written by anonymous sources in several different languages thousands of years ago to mean babies should die rather than have blood transfusions.

But hey, I'll keep trying.

HorseyWoman · 06/09/2007 15:49

Completely agree, Krang.
