Maybe it doesn't count as a public place? (I don't know how they define public place for the law)

TheGinGenie · 29/02/2020 12:12

The pictures also don't seem to show full face coverings which is what the law is against

AlunWynsKnee · 29/02/2020 12:13

Didn't Hong Kong pass a law banning face masks because of the protests a few weeks before the Covid 19 stuff?

TheGinGenie · 29/02/2020 12:13

Oh sorry didn't see the top pictures. I'd say the public place aspect then at a guess

RUOKHUN · 29/02/2020 12:13

@TheGinGenie What pictures are you looking at? A few of those are full face coverings??

RUOKHUN · 29/02/2020 12:14

  1. It's a ticketed event, not public. Masquerade balls aren't banned.
  2. and there wouldn't have been on duty French police there, so who is going to enforce it?
  3. She's a fashion designer. No-one is going to make a fool of themselves arresting models on a catwalk. Privilege of the elite!
n00bMaster69 · 29/02/2020 12:19

A fashion show is a sort of art exhibition, the clothing is the artwork.
You can't go around arresting pieces of art, that would be absurd.

CinnabarRed · 29/02/2020 12:25

Isn’t it only religious face coverings that are banned, because France is a secular country?

PotholeParadise · 29/02/2020 12:25

Ah. Found the precise wording of the law. There is an artistic expression exemption. Incidentally, I saw a woman wearing a mask in a Paris train station this week. No-one stopped her.

"Pour l'application de l'article 1er, l'espace public est constitué des voies publiques ainsi que des lieux ouverts au public ou affectés à un service public.
II. ― L'interdiction prévue à l'article 1er ne s'applique pas si la tenue est prescrite ou autorisée par des dispositions législatives ou réglementaires, si elle est justifiée par des raisons de santé ou des motifs professionnels, ou si elle s'inscrit dans le cadre de pratiques sportives, de fêtes ou de manifestations artistiques ou traditionnelles. "

Jobseeker19 · 29/02/2020 12:36

Because it's not muslim women covering their faces.

MillicentMartha · 29/02/2020 12:39

So while fencing or welding or motorbiking, fine. For religious reasons, not. Obviously racist, then.

Wildthyme · 29/02/2020 12:49

Would love to see the results of people doing welding, fencing and motor cycling without any face and head protection.

You do realise that people have to take off helmets when not doing those things. Go on. Try rocking up to the bank with a fencing helmet on.

Buster72 · 29/02/2020 12:49

Fencing welding and riding a motor cycle require helmets/ face covering as an obvious safety measure.

MillicentMartha · 29/02/2020 12:50

Ok, so high fashion, fine, religious reasons, not fine.

MillicentMartha · 29/02/2020 12:52

Or for tradition, mummers plays perhaps, fine, religious reasons, not fine.

florababy84 · 29/02/2020 12:54

Didn't Hong Kong pass a law banning face masks because of the protests a few weeks before the Covid 19 stuff?

Yes, but it was farcical even then. Now more so because 99.9% are wearing masks on the street.

notimagain · 29/02/2020 12:59

There are various exemptions in the French rules regarding full face covering ( as has been mentioned).

In addition if an individual has recently returned from one of several countries in the Far East ( China, Hong Kong, Singapore, plus a few others) the latest official advice from the French Government is that the individual should wear a face mask when out in public...

I suspect that pragmatic advice, whether we think masks are effective or not, trumps other sensitivities/considerations.

Nameofchanges · 29/02/2020 13:01

Presumably you are allowed to wear masks at a fancy dress party.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 29/02/2020 13:05

I would assume they wouldn't be allowed to wear them in public spaces is illegal. A fashion show is not a public space, it is a private event.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 29/02/2020 13:27

Don't be ridiculous and goady, it's not illegal. Hmm

You can still go skiing and wear a baclava...and you can still ride your motorbike with a full helmet on.

It's about the intent of hiding your face in public demonstrations or for religious reasons. Safety, health are admitted as valid reasons to cover your face. Again, scuba diving is also still allowed in France...

RancidOldHag · 29/02/2020 13:32

I noted from the above:

"si elle est justifiée par des raisons de santé"

Assuming that can be translated as 'health (and safety)' three gear and education face masks are both OK in law.

justasking111 · 29/02/2020 13:41

You do know this is fashion on a catwalk and not real life OP?

PotholeParadise · 29/02/2020 13:45

Assuming that can be translated as 'health (and safety)' three gear and education face masks are both OK in law.

Basically, yes. That's your welding gear, your fencing gear, beekeeping suits and so on, all covered.

LemonFrenzy · 29/02/2020 13:49

So called fashion like this is completely ridiculous anyway. I know that's not what you're asking but just saying.
