Or for tradition, mummers plays perhaps, fine, religious reasons, not fine
Which religion requires the face to be covered in public? even if it did religion shouldn't come in to how a country is run

Reginabambina · 29/02/2020 13:49

@MillicentMartha Islam isn’t a race nor are cultural practices and most Muslims don’t do this anyway because it’s really not a religious thing (indeed, most Muslims I know really really look down on this). It’s discriminatory against a small minority of radical Islamic cultural groups. You really can’t draw a line between this practice and race.

Thinkingabout1t · 29/02/2020 13:56

The designer is being “Ooh look at me, aren’t I daring”. Idiot. But don’t look for social responsibility in the fashion world!

PotholeParadise · 29/02/2020 14:02

Thinkingabout1t

Yup And then on top on that, the Coronavirus comes along to Europe in the run-up for Paris Fashion Week, so it looks intentionally topical on multiple levels! She must feel so smug about the line she followed for her collection now.

Hedgehogblues · 29/02/2020 14:12

Because that law was enacted to penalise Muslim women who choose or feel obliged to cover.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 29/02/2020 14:13

Ugh
Every time I hear or read about the veil ban I get angry

It’s so vicious and anti woman to boot

KahlanRahl · 29/02/2020 14:17

The koran doesn't tell women to hide their face or hair.

Besides, fencing, bee keeping and welding are not things you geberally do in a public street. You're allowed to wear whatever in a private setting.

BurneyFanny · 29/02/2020 14:33

It's not a "veil ban". It's a ban on ostentatious displays of religious garb in public, France being a secular country. You wouldn't be allowed to teach wearing a massive cross round your neck either.

paintedsmile77 · 29/02/2020 15:13

I bet many Muslim women are relieved not to have to wear it. It's a form of subjugation inflicted by men.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 29/02/2020 20:41

ostentatious displays of religious garb in public

Funny that only one religion is banned then

Thisisworsethananticpated · 29/02/2020 20:42

Sikh turbans , pas de probleme

So one gender from one religion targeted then

But nothing wrong with that clearly Hmm

BurneyFanny · 29/02/2020 21:55

Well no, you wouldn’t be allowed to teach at a state school or work in a tax office with a turban or a kippa either.

PotholeParadise · 29/02/2020 22:11

We're talking about two different things here. You can legally cover your head in public including turbans, hijabs and Kippahs, but not your face, since 2011.

In schools, all religious symbols are very strongly discouraged, including Kippahs, as reported here.

Someone much wiser than me once told me that the difference between America and France is that America has separation of state and religion to protect religion from the state, whereas France has separation to protect state from religion.

Think he was right. I think they go too far, but I am from a country where the Queen is officially head of the Church of England...

paintedsmile77 · 29/02/2020 22:24

I totally agree with the ban. Every country has the right to safeguard it's citizens. People walking round with their faces covered is a security risk. When in Rome do as the Romans do. Women in some middle Eastern countries detest having to be covered. It's them that are targeted. There's no religious requirement to be covered anyway.

orangeblosssom · 01/03/2020 05:36

What irks me is that
people, particularly male politicians and journalists can tell women what to wear.

Last time I checked
The majority of terrorists/mass murderers were men.

Yet why is it that women are targeted as a result? If a woman wears something on her head or a burkini on the beach, why is she made into a criminal?

If it’s ok to wear veils for Paris fashion week or masks for Coronavirus( which has limited value any way), then it’s ok to wear headgear/ burkinis.

It’s your body, your clothes, your choice.

It is sad people can’t see the hypocrisy. With the exception of health and safety women should be allowed to wear what they want. Not all Muslim women who wear face covering are forced. How hard is that to understand? Yes some are forced, that don’t mean others should suffer because some men force some women. The people who force people to wear things should be punished not random women who feel the need to cover themselves.

paintedsmile77 · 01/03/2020 09:04

If all people were going round France with their faces covered but the government ordered that just Muslim women uncovered then THAT would be targeting. As it is it's only Muslim women who do, so obviously it's only they who fall under that order. If males were going round with their faces covered then they too would have to uncover.

In light of the terrorist attacks it's only right that everyone should show their face. How easy for a male terrorist to disguise as a woman. All countries should take every precaution they can to prevent terrorist attacks. Safety for its citizens comes first.
