Eddie Izzard making humanity great again?

Let me start out by saying I haven't been an EI for some time, so I accept my views are biased but is it not hugely narcissistic to claim that by running 28 marathons in 28 days in 28 countries he is doing anything to 'Make Humanity Great Again'?

Yes, it's another great achievement and it is to be applauded that he is raising money for charity but it really leaves a bad taste in the mouth for me and feels like it's primarily about a need for attention and adulation.

Also, I have to admit I have never seen someone previously who felt it was important to wear bright pink lipstick every time they run a marathon.

Actually really like him. Are you the same people weeping for Caroline Flack?

FrogsFrogs · 28/02/2020 19:45

This thread started today though bishy and most posters on here will presumably not have seen it.

That post also doesn't seem to be about izzard.

This is a massive talk site if you look I'm sure you can find people saying all sorts of things. It's not usual to reference a comment from a totally different thread and expect everyone to know what you're talking about.

ByeMF · 28/02/2020 19:47

Sorry I don't even understand your comment.

FrogsFrogs · 28/02/2020 19:48

You should take it up on that thread with the person who made that comment, ask them what they mean.

I assume it's about stereotypical mannerisms/ behaviours ascribed to women aka gender role 'feminine'.

CallofDoodee · 28/02/2020 23:27

I do believe there is a debate to be had about women's rights and self ID, but when I read the sneering at any attempt to look more feminine - hand gestures yesterday, lipstick today - I want nothing to do with any of it. Just nasty.

No one is 'sneering' at a man wearing lipstick - they are saying that they don't like it when a man suggests that its his 'girl genetics' that makes him want to wear lipstick. It perpetuates damaging stereotypes and is offensive to women and people are allowed to call it out.

PickAChew · 28/02/2020 23:36

When my boys were babies, back in the noughties, I was so frustrated with the rampant pinkification that was happening. Pink versions of gender neutral stuff and certain things only available in pink in the main, making it difficult to but either of the boys a playhouse that didn't make them go "wagggghhh, that's a girl thing" for example.

It's so disappointing that, rather than being disarmed, the pinkification has been weaponised to the extreme.

justcly · 28/02/2020 23:53

Is it transphobic to object to a man waving away women's rights?

FamilyOfAliens · 29/02/2020 00:01

His worst crime is that he stopped being funny.

Now he comes across as desperately failing to stay relevant.

What's 'nasty' is making stereotypical generalisations that all women wear lipstick, have 'feminine' hand gestures (WTF even IS that?), simper & side eye like Princess Diana because of their genes. That's not 'feminine'. That's the idea of what a woman 'should' be, look like, behave like to conform to that stereotype.

Think it is just a play on the trump slogan. Basically that to actually make things great again you need to do stuff to help people and not be a racist twat?!

I never saw the thing as actually about Eddie. His latest stand up show was really quite a lot about how the left can effectively make a stand about the struggle of extreme right wedding politics. I don’t have a problem with that but then I am one of those liberal left types😂!

TinyGhostWriter · 29/02/2020 10:52

Think it is just a play on the trump slogan.

I got that straight away.

He’s doing something for charity and used a pun. I don’t get what the big deal isHmm

Doyoumind · 29/02/2020 11:53

Yes, of course it's a play on the Trump slogan but read the blurb around it. It very clearly says that making humanity great again is his aim.
