How do I raise money?

Justtrying0 · 28/02/2020 17:20

Hello everyone
This is really embarrassing hence name change
Bottom line is that I had an unexpected expense come up and now I’m short by £500 on my rent
I’ve spent all day trying to think of ways to raise the funds but come up with nothing, can’t get a payday loan due to bad credit.
Landlord has emailed saying she wants to visit next week to discuss rent payments as I have been late a few times in the last 6 months (due to waiting for ex to pay child maintenance but it’s all paid up to date apart from this month). Ultimately I think she’s hinting at serving notice. I’m so worried and my rent is now a week late. I’ve made sure I’ve got food etc for children.
I do get some universal credit but have had a budgeting loan already which I’m still paying therefore can’t get another one.
Any ideas?

Sell whatever you can sell
Short term immediate cash in hand work like babysitting

Neither are likely to get £500 very quickly.

Do you have any friends or family who could loan you any money?

PanicAndRun · 28/02/2020 17:24

Can you borrow from friends and family?
Do you have anything to sell?
Have you cancelled all unnecessary things and get the best deals for all bills? This might not help now,but will in the future.

Will your ex lend you the money and pay less maintenance for a few months?

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 28/02/2020 17:27

Sell and borrow

Not many other ways to raise £500 in a couple of days unfortunately.

If you had paid your rent and had no food or electric you could have applied for a social care fund payment from your local council.

Rent should always be prioritised really, I know it's not ideal, I've been there, unable to feed my kids when tax credits stopped unexpectedly, but there are ways to get food, rent payments, not so much.

If your maintenance is inconsistent then can you request an attachment of earnings?

Meantime is there anything to sell? Can you work from home in your spare time doing paid surveys, that will take pressure off slightly in the longer term? If you have paid back some of your loan you can apply again for a smaller amount. Maybe contact social services or your health visitor, if you have one, and tell them you're in financial difficulty and see if theres anything you can apply for through a referral from them.

It's going to be pretty near impossible to raise in a couple of days but maybe come up with a payment plan and ways that you're trying to improve your situation and have it on paper so your landlord can see you're trying.

Check the £10 a day thread for ideas.

AdoptAdaptImprove · 28/02/2020 17:38

If your landlord genuinely wants to discuss rent payments and not serve notice, and if you’ve only been late paying because your child maintenance is delayed, then could you talk to your landlord about moving the date you pay your rent to later in the month? This would only work, of course, if your CM payment does always arrive safely, but after your rent is due, meaning it’s a cash flow problem rather than your not having enough to afford it.

Hello everyone,

As we usually do in these circs, we're putting our heads round the door with some important reminders.

Right now we can't see any evidence to indicate that the OP isn't above board – if we did, we'd remove the thread straight away. But the truth is that, sadly, we at MNHQ can't know with 100% certainty that any poster is genuine, no matter who they are or how long they have been here. As frustrating as it is, we're not able to vouch for anyone here.

So we always ask users to remember that not everyone on the internet is who they say they are – and remind folk not to give more to another poster, either financially (in cash or gifts) or emotionally (in time or care and support) than they'd be prepared to lose if things went wrong. We strongly advise against parting with any cash or giving away your personal details, and if you receive a PM which makes you uneasy - report it to us and we’ll take a look.

Sorry to hijack your thread briefly there, OP – we really hope you get it all sorted soon. In the meantime, you might find some useful information on our guide for dealing with financial difficulty.

Always prioritise paying rent first. Then worry about the rest

arethereanyleftatall · 28/02/2020 18:10

Op - can you give us a little more info in terms of what you already do to earn money? (For example if you already work 16 hours per day there'll be little point anyone advising you to take in any more work)

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 28/02/2020 18:24

You could try setting up a Gofundme page - can be a quick way for emergency money, depending on who reads it.

Biancadelrioisback · 28/02/2020 18:27

Sell whatever you can and do odd jobs for people. Pawn stuff if necessary

strawberry2017 · 28/02/2020 18:30

Whatever you do don't get a pay day loan. They are not helping they cause more debt.
Start by asking family and agree with pp you need to look at what you can sell.
You also then need to look at your expenses going forward. Where can you save money, make changes?
Always make sure rent is paid first, no point having food if you don't have a roof over your head.
Make sure you are getting all the financial support you can be doing.

LovingLola · 28/02/2020 18:34

Ask family and friends.

Graphista · 28/02/2020 18:51

I agree with pps you always prioritise rent above everything else.

That said the issue is immediate.

What money do you have currently and how much is your rent?

Have you any direct debits due out in next couple of days? If so contact the companies concerned and see if you can move the dds to later dates, I've done that at times when things were tight.

Sell/pawn anything you can.

Borrow from family/friends

Call shelter, this is exactly the kind of issue they can advise on.

Monday first thing contact your local welfare rights advisor to get help with your budget and income.

Frankly cm is very poorly enforced here in the uk and I would advise NOT including it in your main budget.

Create a budget that doesn't include that and see it as a "bonus" IF it's paid.

Hope you're able to sort things

Flog the TV

hazell42 · 28/02/2020 19:06

Not helpful, but payday loans are a thing of the past
Thank god because they preyed on the poor
Credit union might be able to give you a loan
They can work pretty fast sometimes too

Oysterbabe · 28/02/2020 19:07

Do you family you can stay with for a while? I've got it be honest, I would be serving notice.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 28/02/2020 19:08

Your rent should be your first priority what was your unexpected bill, your rent isn’t an unexpected bill Confused

londonrach · 28/02/2020 19:12

Do what i do..sell everything you dont need!

londonrach · 28/02/2020 19:14

Pay rent and council tax before food

londonrach · 28/02/2020 19:15

Ive sold my daughters baby annabelle before and rebought it from someone else for same price month later...food in tummy better than toys

Queenofheartsnomore · 28/02/2020 19:30

I'm sure if you had friends or family to borrow from you wouldn't have started this thread. Can you pawn your phone, tv, tablet etc?

You could always start a thread on MN.
