How do I raise money?

Hello everyone
This is really embarrassing hence name change
Bottom line is that I had an unexpected expense come up and now I’m short by £500 on my rent
I’ve spent all day trying to think of ways to raise the funds but come up with nothing, can’t get a payday loan due to bad credit.
Landlord has emailed saying she wants to visit next week to discuss rent payments as I have been late a few times in the last 6 months (due to waiting for ex to pay child maintenance but it’s all paid up to date apart from this month). Ultimately I think she’s hinting at serving notice. I’m so worried and my rent is now a week late. I’ve made sure I’ve got food etc for children.
I do get some universal credit but have had a budgeting loan already which I’m still paying therefore can’t get another one.
Any ideas?

I second talking to Shelter, but also check if your local council has and homelessness prevention schemes.

@redminicooper I am very wary of threads like this but that’s massively uncalled for.

£500 is a lot of money to raise in a few days. I'm not sure how you're going to manage it. You'll have to hope that the landlord will give you more time.

I would sell anything and everything (clothes, toys, household items) on Facebook marketplace and take any electrical goods to Cash Converters for starters. I'd also ask family and friends (several people) for a small loan. I couldn't borrow £500 off one person, my nearest and dearest are all skint.

Take in ironing?

What was the unexpected expense? Was it a one off or will you need to find an extra £500 each month?

Speak to a credit union or your current bank about getting an overdraft before you go down the payday loan route. Once you start with a payday loan the debt spirals and it is near impossible to escape.

Can you get a 0% credit card deal (& pay it off immediately)?

In the meantime, ebay any clothes, toys, books, etc

What are the resources you have available? Eg do you drive (could you do deliveries?)? What are your skills (are you arty? Could you sell paintings? Or get some freecycle furniture and upcycle it for profit?)

Will your next wage cover your rent twice plus bills? If so, 0% interest credit card is all I can think of.

If not, Sell everything you can. You can always re buy 2nd hand later. Ask friends and family.

What was your unexpected bill? I've had unexpected bills from unknown bills coming due to my car breaking down and it's pretty much essential but I still paid my rent first and the garage later. Rent is ALWAYS first priority. Always.

Seriously....??

CassidyStone · 29/02/2020 13:58

If your landlord does serve you notice - as well they might - do you have a contingency plan as to where you may go? Do you have anyone who would be prepared to put you up on the short term while you sort out your finances and find somewhere else to live?

I'm not sure if non-payment of rent as a reason for eviction would be classed as being unintentionally homeless - call Shelter for advice.

£500 is one hell of an unexpected expense. What was it for? Obviously you should pay your rent first.
