Not to book a summer holiday because of Covid-19

First of all I realise there really are bigger issues and this is a very first world problem to even be considering holiday, but humour me!

We were waiting to book a family summer holiday until we heard about DH work commitments and salary. Now we know that we can afford a holiday I am not sure if it’s worth booking anything as it seems like we could be in the middle of a serious pandemic by then! DH thinks I am overreacting and we should just book!

We had planned to drive to the south of France and do a Eurocamp type holiday but I don’t know if it’s worth booking now. Or maybe wait and see how it is nearer the summer?! I don’t want to get stranded or find we can’t go because of quarantine / lock down. Plus a campsite with a load of kids running around from all over Europe is likely to be a good place to catch something I reckon...

What is everyone else doing? Is it business as usual? Are you booking / have you booked a holiday?

AIBU to put off booking until May or June when we can see what’s happening?

I'm off to Malta in a month's time a long awaited holiday - many years since I went and intend to go unless advised not to or required not to. I booked my flights and hotel separately. I have travel insurance via my bank through their Mastercard benefits programme - paid for travel on this but not sure if it would cover cancellation that is enforced rather than through my own choice.

crosstalk · 28/02/2020 19:03

Travel insurance won't cover repatriation should you be in a hotel/cruise ship AIUI and have to stay there in confinement. It's a government decision about travel and the sooner they give coherent advice after the COBRA meeting on Monday, the better. Time for everyone to check the tiny small print on their insurance policies.

The other thing to consider if going to a place with limited hospitals and doctors is that you might be exporting the virus to a place that can't cope if you spread it as a superspreader.

Let alone you catching it there, not being able to be brought home and having to suffer insufficient services.

rookiemere · 28/02/2020 19:06

Definitely wouldn't book something at the minute. Wait and see what happens.

lljkk · 28/02/2020 19:07

My gut feeling is folk shouldn't book if they can delay.
There's a COBRA mtg happening on Monday? Glory Be.

Madcatgirl · 28/02/2020 19:10

If you haven’t already booked a holiday then for gods sake book it as an ATOL protected package. That way if your holiday gets cancelled it is all refunded to you, if your stay is extended your holiday company will look after you. I’ve had to deal with so many people losing money because they didn’t think that a package was important.

Echobelly · 28/02/2020 19:14

We're already booked for US in summer, which is unusually organised of us, dammit.

OTOH, the impression I get is that worst will likely have blown over after seasons change.

ineedaholidaynow · 28/02/2020 19:53

I would hate to be patient zero

bengalcat · 28/02/2020 20:03

Off to the French Alps in three weeks and Iceland in July . No plans to change anything .

delilahbucket · 28/02/2020 20:14

Already booked for August before it all kicked off. Can't say I'm particularly worried. Our insurance policy is robust, expensive and robust! Viruses don't cope well with warm weather anyway.

Andcake · 28/02/2020 20:18

Wait and see - if it’s eurocamp style I’ve booked siblu in the south of France quite last minute before so I wouldn’t panic. We are waiting a bit it’s all hard to predict and I am more worried about being quarantined somewhere- stuck in a tiny room or losing money than getting ill.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 28/02/2020 20:23

Some insurance companies are still covering this from looking at another thread

Strictly1972 · 28/02/2020 20:24

We are due to go to San Francisco in May. We booked it last August & it’s been on my mind but I’m hoping that it will have calmed down by then or if it is cancelled we will be covered by atol/insurance. Also planning France for August. We’ve only paid a deposit on each yet so I’m hoping it’s a bit clearer in a month or so.
I would probably hold off if we hadn’t already booked. Keep the time off work then get something last minute. There’s bound to be lots of bargains this year!

Jobseeker19 · 28/02/2020 20:25

I'm thinking similar. I don't mind if I don't go away this year as I dont want to book a holiday and then in the summer for it to be cancelled.

PumpkinP · 28/02/2020 20:26

I’m abit annoyed tbh as already book and haven’t been away in 10 years, also first time the kids will be going on holiday so will be pissed off if it’s cancelled

Putyourshoeson99 · 28/02/2020 20:27

We’re booked for Easter and will go unless the airline cancels on us but we’re holding off on the summer plans just in case. I don’t want to end up in a quarantined hotel somewhere...

MelbaToast · 28/02/2020 20:38

I've booked for a holiday over the easter break and I am concerned we won't be able to go. Apparently some of the countries that don't have it, aren't letting people in because of the risk. I booked it just before Covid hit the papers. Would I book it now? Definitely not.

I know people keep on harping on about the risk of death being small but a few years ago I had the flu and was really ill with it, to the point I ended up in hospital on a drip. I'm a reasonably healthy person as well. Flu is a serious illness and shouldn't be treated lightly. If there's a way to stop it spreading, then why wouldn't you try?

Shakespearesbrother · 28/02/2020 20:43

Sister in law works in industry and bookings are down 90% on this week last year so it clearly shows how much this virus and the news is impacting on Business.

Purpletigers · 28/02/2020 21:01

I’m not booking anything at the moment until I see how it’s going to spread and what the actual risks are . More so since youngest has expressed a desire to go on a cruise. I do not want to spend 10 days stuck in a cabin. I’ll wait until nearer the time and if we don’t get away it won’t be the end of the world .

Sexykitten2005 · 28/02/2020 22:03

I’ve got a holiday booked for a couple of weeks time but I’m not too worried about that one due to the destination. I won’t be booking anything else, not because I’m worried about Coronavirus but because I couldn’t manage a 2 week quarantine period at my destination followed by 2 weeks in the U.K. that’s a month in quarantine and my business would suffer. It’s about knowing I can pay the bills

Rhayader · 28/02/2020 22:16

DH was meant to be flying in business this weekend but his company have cancelled all business trips and are asking anyone travelling to any of the impacted countries (including the whole of Asia) to self quarantine on their return for two weeks!

We’ve just come back from a half term break but won’t be booking anything for this summer just yet... we were planning to visit family over Easter and will probably still do that but it’s less than 2hr drive.

My sister is meant to be going to a wedding in Milan in June which is now looking a bit sketchy 😬

isabellerossignol · 28/02/2020 22:17

I already had our holiday booked for the summer. In past years I had always arranged travel insurance shortly before travelling, as I was really only concerned about the medical cover. But the one change I've made this time is to arrange the insurance too.

I have another short break booked for around easter time, and at the moment it looks very possible that that one might end up cancelled...

Rhayader · 28/02/2020 22:17

Flying ON business*

That wasn’t meant to be a weird boast 😂

MajesticWhine · 28/02/2020 22:21

I've already booked to go to Italy for our main family holiday. I haven't paid in full, and I'm wondering now what's going to happen. YWNBU to wait and see.

Darcydashwood · 28/02/2020 22:23

Due to go to Tenerife soon. Unless Govt travel advice changes we will be going as would lose all the money paid if we cancelled. I am slightly apprehensive - mainly about getting stranded out there - but equally trying to keep some perspective! Would feel happier if I could get some bloody hand gel to take though! 🤦‍♀️

ComeOnGordon · 28/02/2020 22:30

I’ve decided not to book. I can afford to go on holiday but I’d be gutted if it was cancelled and I didn’t get my money back (not a package trip). Will wait and see how it all develops
