AIBU to think things feel a bit apocalyptic?

Covid-19, unprecedented flooding, raging bushfires, Syria, state cyber warfare, rise of populism, stock market crashes...not looking good is it? Genuinely felt anxious last night after watching the news.

YABU = get a grip
YANBU = start prepping

*I forgot to add, my mother used to laugh at preppers, and thought the whole idea was riddiculous, (until now).

TSSDNCOP · 28/02/2020 19:17

Well Bellini, you are quite determined to hole up and fair play to you. I feel quite the opposite. in my experience of bit apocalyptic events in the last and this century capitalism tends to even out the kinks.

We didnt have supermarkets everywhere in the 70s.
We did have local butchers who apart from thoef shop (even small villages had a butchers shop) also came round in vans once a week and also took orders for weekends. Co-op van came round weekly as did the local fish mongers van and we had milk delivered.
Apart from the co op and the local shop which sold just about everything imaginable, everything was fresh and locally sourced or at least in rural areas it was. Oh and we didn't have freezers to fill either. Most meals were cooked from scratch and lots of home baking.

We didnt rely on supermarkets getting deliveries on time which is something we all rely on far too much these days hence a bit of prepping is pretty sensible in the current climate.

Off you pop to Boots then and try and get hand gel! Shelves are now empty in my nearest town and they had restricted it to 2 bottles per person! None of the supermarkets in town had any either and I only wanted it for work due to the minging habits of customers!

There's plenty where I am. Just because it's sold out where you are, doesn't mean it's the same everywhere!

jasjas1973 · 28/02/2020 19:51

We tried buying 5l of alcohol gel wholesale for our team.... complete no-no.... the company is inundated with orders and cannot keep up with demand.

None in our local supermarkets for the last few weeks now.... and before some smart arse says soap, its no good if you don't have access to water.

Its not just here there are plenty posts on here by people who cant get it anywhere.

Even online pharmacies are oos or restricting it.

If you can afford it it makes sense to get extra food in. Apart from anything else it jeans if you get ill, you don't have to sort out buying food.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/02/2020 09:19

I don't expect an apocalypse

  • that's why I've prepped and have about 6 weeks food & supplies in

I wouldn't for an apocalypse, because ordinary people can't prep for that

BigChocFrenzy · 29/02/2020 09:26

"The article link I posted shows entire underground bunkers kitted out with operating rooms, gardens, crops, swimming pools, communication centers, seeds, human and animal DNA. Bill Gates has prepped buying those things I listed. "

That link has no relevance to anyone here, except the handful of Mumsnetters worth $100+ million

The prep threads are just discussing what sensible precautions ordinary people should take in case they are quarantined / self-isolated or otherwise can't do the shopping for a couple of weeks

The rich will survive all this then!! Nothing much changes does it?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 29/02/2020 09:56

The trouble is, we’re bombarded with bad news now, in a way that former generations weren’t. There have always been horrible things going on, though admittedly floods and virus, not to mention the stock market, do seem doom-laden at the moment.

I should imagine that being in the midst of WW2 felt an awful lot worse. I often think of my mother, on her own with a baby in London during the Blitz, never knowing if or when the dreaded telegram would arrive - my father was in the RN on the terribly dangerous N Atlantic convoys. And she was a prime worrier - nowadays she’d probably be deemed to have anxiety.

Best to watch/read/listen to a lot less news, IMO. I now do just enough to keep up with the basics.

MissPoldark · 29/02/2020 09:56

If things were severe enough to require an underground bunker, I don’t think life would be much fun anyway. Good luck to them!

Thenextstorm · 29/02/2020 09:59

Just because it's been bad before doesn't mean it can't be bad now, the two don't cancel each other out funnily enough.

HappentoHappen · 29/02/2020 10:00

Those of us with a safe place to live, enough money to know where our next month of meals and entertainment are coming from, and access to the NHS are in fact the world’s rich.

mindproject · 29/02/2020 10:51

The world has always been hostile. I think the psychopath billionaires have recently realised their escape to Mars isn't going to happen anytime soon.

iheartislesofwight · 29/02/2020 12:12

it would be interesting to see into the future and how this pans out, and if all the scare stories were true, or not as the case may be.
