AIBU?

AIBU to think things feel a bit apocalyptic?

Covid-19, unprecedented flooding, raging bushfires, Syria, state cyber warfare, rise of populism, stock market crashes...not looking good is it? Genuinely felt anxious last night after watching the news.

YABU = get a grip
YANBU = start prepping

I lived through the cold war too - I think part of the problem is 24 hour news. If you feel anxious then step away from the news feeds.

The news just makes things sound dramatic and nowadays we get news from everywhere, instantly. It's always been like this, people just never knew.

@PlomBear so take sensible precautions as there is something to take preacuations against?

I hate this attitude of shutting down conversation because it's 'worrying' to talk about things that are happening in the world. I'm sure you would want to talk about it if you were in Australia, Idlib or even flooded Hereford like my family is at the moment.

The end of days, the seven seals jobby. Grin can't remember what they are though, I'm not religious.

I think the human race has always been a bit shit and will always be a bit shit until we're gone or trimmed down a bit. Maybe give the news a swerve

@SundayGirlB whatever you do, don’t look up how many ‘near misses’ (in astrological terms) we have with asteroids capable of destroying society as we know it Wink

I don’t want to be patronising but I do wonder how old you are. Honestly there is always something capable of wiping us out. If I’m going down I’m taking Boris and Trump with me!

Lived things like this through many decades now including what others have said of the 70s and 80s. Still here .. Older and wiser.

However, I was once like you so I would say YANBU but you are , a bit .

I never understand what people mean when they say "prepping." What kind of prepping? Getting extra food in? Building an underground bunker?

What kind of "prepping" does one do for an apocalypse?

I think I've lived through about 10 Ends of the World now. We used to talk about nuclear war when I was a kid FGS.

Still a much better life than the one people lived in the last 2 world wars.

Neither bushfires or floods are a new phenomenon, bad management, cost cutting and ridiculous planning permissions are too blame.

Stock market crashing.. well, that's an obvious consequence of the panic movement isn't it.

and so on. Western countries experiencing a bit of shit are laughable for those who have been struggling for years, decades even.
Our holidays might be disrupted. People have been lacking basic necessities, let alone medical supplies for decades. But when it's them and not us, it's not "apocalyptic" Hmm

@Nowayorhighway - I think you don't know what prepping is. It's whatever you think is reasonable for your budget and circumstances to get a bit of resilience into your home.
There are things I can do nothing about and things I can do something about.
For example, being locked down at home for two weeks is no big deal to me because I'm ready for it.
Getting poorly is not something I welcome but I have MS so I have to take a certain amount of personal care of myself.
I live somewhere that often gets hit by snow so I am ready for power cuts etc.
Doomsday nonsense is of no interest to me.

Plagues, flu (Spanish flu!), massacres, natural disasters, have always been a part of life. We have more access to world news now. Things have always killed us.

the thing is inspite of all the problems the world has ever experienced the human species has always found a way to survive and will continue to do so in some shape or form. i want to spend the remainder of my life enjoying it, i can't get panicked about things i cannot change or do anything about.

I'm always reminded of being in Florida during Hurricane Irma and hearing on the news that the state was going to be "uninhabitable for 6 months", and being stuck in Bangkok during the ash cloud, when they claimed "airspace would be closed for the rest of the year" ... yet more examples of all common sense being throw overboard in pursuit of an exciting headline

Sadly this is how the media behave, only now we have social media too, to whip up even more of a frenzy. We need to be watchful of course, but we also need to hang on to some sense of reality ... and remember that the sun will still rise tomorrow morning

The species will survive into the foreseeable future. That does not mean that things so far this year have not been great.
We have had more flooding than normal and climate change impacts such as bushfires. We have had a rise of populism and the right wing. And corona virus is real. Of course stock markets are going to suffer if only due to issues with imports from China and the travel industry suffering.

@Puzzledandpissedoff I never heard those predictions. There are always those that exaggerate. Although wit the volcano ash cloud no one knew exactly how long it would last, I never heard any commentator saying that long.

The Doomsday Clock is now set at 100 seconds to midnight, which is the closest it's ever been since its inception in 1947. So that's nice Smile

It does feel a bit depressing right now. On the positive side I bet jehovah Witnesses are all relaxed. They believe the four riders have been coming for the last hundred or so years. The day when their lives improve is getting ever closer
