What imaginary topics would we be discussing?

Bit of fun Smile

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 01/03/2020 10:04

Where would we be reading this forum?

There were Internet forums before the advent of the WWW - not sure when they started but I used them a little in the first half of the 80s. Discussions would include the advantages of UNIX or VMS over whatever was on the mainframe, feminism (in which I'd likely be the only female) but mostly it was playing Mornington Crescent.

longearedbat · 01/03/2020 10:20

@Gingernaut Ayds were available in the 60s and were very popular. I (and many of my peers) used them at boarding school. You were supposed to eat one before a meal and it would so say reduce your appetite. Of course, they didn't! They were not very nice - rather chalky and gritty. Today their diet claims wouldn't be allowed I suppose.

Saxineno · 01/03/2020 10:26

AIBU to dip babies dummy in brandy for teething?

Oliversmumsarmy · 01/03/2020 11:54

But the thread is about the 50s,60s and 70s

TheMemoryLingers · 01/03/2020 12:09

From Wikipedia:

"Some of the very first forum systems were the Planet-Forum system, developed at the beginning of the 1970-s, the EIES system, first operational in 1976, and the KOM system, first operational in 1977."

Message boards were definitely a thing by the 80s. I remember reading a Sunday supplement article in the mid-80s about an American paedophile ring that was using them (with hindsight, the shape of bad things to come Sad ) and trying to get my head round how on earth they worked, since our Commodore 64 was the only computer I was familiar with.

DontTellThemYourNamePike · 01/03/2020 12:11

AIBU to shoehorn five of my daughter's friends into my mini and drive them to the roller disco in the next town? There is no room in the boot as that's where I keep my mobile phone.

Madein1995 · 01/03/2020 12:55

Aibu to think these tights are newfangled rubbish? If you get a ladder in one you can't just swap it as per stockings,. Expensive tat, will never catch on.

Aibu to think these vaccinations are fantastic and the hippy couple next door would feel differently about not vaccinating their kids had they seen their uncle Harold die of TB?

Aibu - work in an office and been told my mini skirts are too mini and are a distraction for the men. Aibu to wear an even shorter one tomorrow?

My mum says I'm a lazy slattern for using convenience foods. I've tried explaining that with 2 under 2 and a full time job, it's necessary. She claims I should give up work and cook meals from scratch.

Aibu to not want to go down the mines like every generation of men before me? I don't like close spaces and I got decent o levels. I want to go to college in London and be an artist. Dad says I'm too soft for my own good and that it might be the swinging sixties in London but here in the valleys were too busy supporting our families. He's arranged for me to start down Powells mine on Monday. I don't want to

Aibu to think my sister is old fashioned? I get married in a month and am 2 months in the family way. My sister keeps muttering about disgrace and shame and how I can't wear white. Aibu to slap her and /or ban her from being bridesmaid?

Aibu - I've got a job down the clothes shop, and I really enjoy it. I'm saving up for my flat with my boyfriend but in the meantime I love with my friend Jean in a grotty bedsit. We pool our money to go out on Fridays and Saturday, and I go and beg food off my sister so we have more drinking money. She calls me irresponsible but you're only young once!

Aibu to think the new school leaving age is a pile of crap? My daughter was going to go into a good job down the nylons factory. Now she's made to stay on and is talking about getting qualifications and going to college to be a teacher! Aibu to think what's the point? She'll only have to give up work once she's married anyway.

Aibu to think these drug addicts don't need mollycoddling and medication? Send them off to war that'll sort them. Bring back national service. Why should my tax money, which I could be spending on fags and beer (completely different) be going on supplying layabouts with drugs.

Aibu to go into nursing? After watching emergency ward 10 it looks really rewarding and quite easy and I'll meet some dishy doctors. My mum says I've not got the faintest idea and keeps telling me stories about her time as a nurse volunteer during the war. It's as though she thinks she's an expert because she spent a few months in some field in France. As I keep telling her, this is England and I'm sure she's exaggerating anyway.

Aibu to traipse to another city 20miles away to try and register with a gp for the pill. You've not got to be married to get it anymore but I'm sure our family doctor would tell my mum.

Aibu to think dil is a bit weird? She has dyed hair (streak of green) and wears floaty skirts, she's a vegetarian too so Sunday dinners are a trial. Aibu to just give her beans on toast? They've just told me she's pregnant - aibu to insist she stops this silliness now and starts eating liver?

Merlotmum85 · 01/03/2020 13:11

AIBU to ask DH not to go to the pub every Sunday and get trollied while I cook the roast?

Our neighbours have just fitted a serving hatch in their home. We went round to look yesterday - very swish!

janemaster · 01/03/2020 13:18

AIBU to think we should bring back National Service?
I heard this POV a lot from the older generation when I was young.

These boys wearing long hair are so unnatural. I can't tell sometimes if they are a girl or a boy. When my DD brought home a friend I asked her if her friend was a Martha or Arthur. My DD is now not talking to me. Aibu?

Mockerswithnoknockers · 01/03/2020 13:50

Went to the Doctors the other day and he never offered me a cigarette.

What is the world coming to?

StCharlotte · 01/03/2020 13:52

There is no room in the boot as that's where I keep my mobile phone.

Yes!

SilverySurfer · 01/03/2020 14:58

1954 - now that food rationing has ended what food do you want to buy as a treat?

1955 - ITV channel started broadcasting - AIBU to think two tv channels are OTT?

late 50's: AIBU to tell my DM who is cooking spag bol for the first time that you need more than three strands of spaghetti per person as she thinks it puffs up when cooked (true story)

1960 - I've just got my first job and it pays £6.50 shillings a week. AIBU to think I should be able to save some each week?

1960's - AIBU to love the Fab Four (the Beatles)? My parents say they need a short back and sides but I think their hair is fab.

Late 60s - AIBU to think that colour tv looks unnatural?

Madein1995 · 01/03/2020 16:31

Aibu to think colour TV looks a bit odd?

I've just turned 17 and been out with my boyfriend for 2 years, and have no plans to get married yet. I've just found out I'm pregnant. I've told my boyfriend and he wants me to get an abortion - says that he can't afford a family yet and he'll pay for the procedure. Aibu to think that back street abortionists are dangerous and not to go near? Also that he'd have plenty of money to support us if only he got a proper job rather than going to college? My parents would go mad at first but I know dad would get him a job at the tarpaulin factory and we could have our own little home sometime. Aibu to tell him he's got responsibilities now?

Aibu to think it's unfair that I have to give up my job once I get married? My partner wants to get married but I keep telling him no, I like being a teacher.

Aibu to think that if the new woman on the street can't be bothered to clean her doorstep and launder her net curtains each week, then surely she can't be bothered to keep her children? They go out in unironed clothes sometimes. And she sends her husband to work without ironing his shirts! I know she has 6 children but really! My gran had 11 children and she kept them looking immaculate!

Aibu to think blue nun wine is far superior to gin? Everyone knows only common people drink gin. On a side note, how do I put 5he bins out without them clanging?

Aibu to jack my job as a mechanic apprentice in for the simple reason of I don't like it? I'll hand my notice in tomorrow after I get my week's wages. Then I've got until Monday to get another. I know I'm not - Ted from my school has had 6 jobs since leaving school and we only finished 7 weeks ago. Dad reckons it shows a lack of determination and no decent employer will want me. Aibu not to care? I don't want a career just a job that pays enough for leather jackets and beer.

Aibu to think my friend is mad for staying at home? She pays her mother half her wages for board.i keep telling her she could get a flatshare for less. She reckons she's better off at home as her bills and food are included. I tell her to do what I do - steal loo roll from work and toiletries and perfumes from the samples in boots. As for food, live on chips nicked off lads plates in work for midday and just go home once a week to raid her parents cupboards.

My wife has recently had twins and we've another 4 kids. Aibu to expect her to have my dinner ready when I get in? Its 3 weeks since the kids were born, I've let things slip til now but aibu to expect standards up again? She's got her sister to help and the eldest girl (9) can surely mind the babies?

Aibu to think the beatles are a pile of crap? And to insist teen dd stops listening on the wireless?

I need to lose some weight (9 stone at 5 foot 5),aibu to go to the drs for some tablets? They've worked a treat for marge next door. Mind marge is now always on the go, but that don't matter - I'll have lovely clean windows. It'll stop the busybody next door from moaning at the lack of cleanliness

Aibu to think putting whiskey on toddler dds dummy is genius? It'll stop the teething pain and helps her sleep too. Nurse sil says it's bad but what does she know

Ellmau · 01/03/2020 17:37

AIBU to say I should get to choose what we watch on the television sometimes? DH says he paid for it so he should choose the programme.

AIBU to buy readymade clothes for the DC/myself rather than making them myself? DM is saying I'm lazy!

AIBU to love my new electric sewing machine?

How do you cook avocados? I don' think I'm doing it right.

BikeRunSki · 01/03/2020 18:39

Aibu to think the beatles are a pile of crap?

In the early 1960s my dad shared an office with the man who sold advertising space on their company’s products. He turned down The Beatles and Daleks because he didn’t think either would catch on.

BikeRunSki · 01/03/2020 18:43

AIBU to swig a bit of the baby’s gripe water? I know it’s alcoholic, but if it’s made for babies it can’t be too bad for me.

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/03/2020 19:31

Gripe water was brilliant for curing hiccups.

janemaster · 01/03/2020 19:36

AIBU to drink 2 Guinesses a day when pregnant? My mum said it might be dangerous for the baby, but the Dr already advised me to have one a day, so I can't see that 2 will do any harm.

Winniewonka · 01/03/2020 21:36

Made in 1995 - You don't need to worry about clanging metal bins, the bin men will collect them from your back yard or garden! Just remember to leave the gate open for them. They will lift them onto their shoulders and carry them off to the dust cart. They'll even bring them back!

Ellmau · 02/03/2020 19:34

AIBU to get a television on hire purchase so we can watch the Coronation?

AIBU to think there will never be a female Prime Minister?

AIBU to be excited about the first man on the moon?

AIBU to think the Iron Curtain will never come down?

Madein1995 · 02/03/2020 19:34

Aibu to think 4 channels is too many for dgc? They come to mine after school while their mum works (that's another thread!) and want to watch TV constantly. What was wrong with 3 channels? And technicolour looks all wrong

Aibu to not want the entire street using my phone? We paid plenty (2pounds)to have that installed. I don't mind the odd emergency call if needed, but the whole street keeps knocking the door to use my phone. I wouldn't mind so much but they traipse in, make a call, wake up the baby for a cuddle (or with their shrill 'oh never!' voices) and never offer any money. Dh says I'm being unreasonable and it's part of being a community.

Aibu to think it's fair that ds age 4 gets a bath before the men? Yeah I know they've been down the miles all day but if they get in first the water will be filthy and ds might as well bathe in a puddle for all the good it'll do. Aibu to think Dh can damn well wait 10 minutes more?

Aibu to expect Dh to take me out dancing on a Friday? Why should I be stuck at home with the kids while he gets pissed down the club?

Aibu to be thrilled at my job in the typing pool? Independence at last! I've got my own place (a flat that I share with 4 others) and I love it.

Aibu to want to keep my baby? Am 6momtjs pregnant, turned 16 lady week and my boyfriend fucked back off ti the oil rig. I want the baby - I could get a job typing and then a proper job once baby is older. My parents are demanding I give it up for adoption and have said that if I say no they'll throw me out. The kind midwife has found me a place in a hostel and will help sort my benefits. Aibu to take her up on her kind offer? And to want to scream at my parents for not abandoning me

Aibu to raise my dgc as my dc? Dd is only 15 and it'd ruin her life completely. I know I'm not bu

Madein1995 · 02/03/2020 20:04

I've met a new fella and were engaged. No baby on the way yet (pill) but I want us to move in together. I live in a little rundown bedsit and he lives with his mother - - being pampered and fussed over like a toddler - - I've seen a fabulous flat on the way to work. Really central and everything. He refuses to move unless it's to a proper house and refuses to rent either!! He says I'm more than welcome to move into his but I don't quite fancy Thomas the tank wallpaper and his mother on at me constantly. Aibu to tell him he gets the flat or were unengaged?

Aibu to think the homosexuality laws are horrid and unfair. It's barbaric that a man can beat his wife but genuine love isn't allowed. I want to scream it from the rooftops but my girlfriend tells me no - that she'd lose her nursing job and me my teachers job if I did. Aibu to descreetly lead discussions on this in my RS classes (while silently supporting the pro homosexuality side of course)

Aibu to do a night course? I want to do a course in these newfangled computers that'll help me get a job. My dad tells me it's a load of tosh and grumbles but I think it'll be useful.

Aibu to have my baby at home? The midwifes are much nicer and it feels a bit impersonal in hospital.

Aibu to smack the cow next door across the face? We've just moved from Jamaica, my Cyril is a bus driver and we work hard. Her Harry drinks beer and sleeps and she keeps popping out children. Aibu to think we're giving a better contribution to this country than she is?

I work in a prison and I'm disgraced 2ith conditions - slopping out and cock roaches and fights its horrible. I've seen young lads go in for shoplifting a bottle of booze and leave fully equipped for the criminal world. The home office is on about giving less custodial sentences and my union is up in arms. Aibu to think tbe home office is right for a change?

Aibu to think spaghetti bolognese made with tinned tkmsfos, mince and some onion is perfect? I don't know what Dd is whining over. Ever since she started seeing that Italian thug she's gone proper posh.

Aibu to choose the name the new baby Samantha? I love it but my hubby thinks it's too modern. He wants to call her Edith. Aibu to tell him I squeezed her out my lady parts and he can kindly do one.

Ellmau · 03/03/2020 20:19

Should we get rid of the death penalty?

Baby Names Thread: which is more unique, Sharon, Tracey or Michelle? I don't want DD to be one of five Susans like me.

AIBU to think showers are rubbish, always either too hot or too cold?

AIBU to pack off the DC to Sunday School every Sunday afternoon even though DH and I don't go to church, just so we can get some alone time?

How do I stop the blasted bluetits getting the top of the milk? I've tried everything!

AIBU to be upset we missed the latest James Bond film because we were on holiday when it came to our local cinema?

Carry On: sexist rubbish or AIBU?

x2boys · 03/03/2020 21:12

I think Tracy-Anne it makes it a bit more classy or maybe Sharon-Louise ? @Ellmmau.

Madein1995 · 03/03/2020 21:40

Aibu to think they should bring back the death penalty for violent murderers?

Aibu to think the new French teacher at ds school is too racy? She's from France, shes young and wears pencil skirts and eyeliner. She's far too forward and all my ds friends love her. Uptake in French o level has increased and I'm sure it's not from any desire to visit Paris! Aibu to think there was nothing wrong with miss brown? OK so she's been at the school since I went there, and she's about as French as I am, and I doubt she's ever actually left the UK - but she wore sensible brogues and ruled the class with a fist of iron. I don't want my son getting distracted!

Aibu to think nurseries are a better and more reliable method than leaving baby with a neighbour? I still have memories of my neighbour making me play out in all weather's age 3! And Mrs Higgins next door smokes 40 a day and. Her childcare method is let the older kids mind the babies. Aibu to send the baby to a proper nursery? They have training after all and it'll help her development. My sister thinks I'm stuck up and wasteful. I just think she's jealous because my dh is a foreman.

Aibu to be thrilled rationing has ended? And to insist dc eat everything on their plates as I remember a time when we had nothing?

Aibu u to think the sweeney is an accurate representation of the police and they're all violent, swearing, dirty coppers?

Aibu to think pace is a load of balls? How are we meant to get evidence if we have to treat the lying toerags like. Humans and not the pond slime they are?

Aibu to have slapped my boss? He tried touching me up and he's married and all! My friend beryl said I've gone too far and now my job is at risk.
