Is cutting my own head off the only answer?

I have had unbearable pain in one ear, for several days now.

It started gradually about three weeks ago.

Yesterday I saw my GP who said there was a fungal infection and gave me drops.

It is much, much worse in the evenings - to the point where I am now considering chopping off my own head.

Has anyone got any advice? I have taken (variously) co-codamol, diclofenac and just paracetamol.

AIBU too cut off my head in these circumstances?

Seems like the best solution. Alternatively could you find someone (some sort of healthcare professional not an stranger off the street) with one of those funny little hoover things that suck out all the gunk in your ear.

Antihop · 27/02/2020 22:29

Read up on improving your gut bacteria which can reduce fungal infections. Dr michael Mosley has written a good book on this.

Did your gp say to come back if it doesn't clear up?

TheMustressMhor · 27/02/2020 22:31

I imagine my GP would be glad to see me again but this is OOH, obviously.

I am not convinced about the fungal infection diagnosis anyway.

If you are in this much pain then you need to be seen. For fuck-off painkillers if nothing else! My sympathy💐

TheMustressMhor · 27/02/2020 22:35

It is not painful at all in the mornings. it's weird. I think every day that it's better, then (round about the time the GP surgery closes) it starts to hurt a bit - until by 8 pm I am whimpering in pain.

At the moment I am beside myself.

And it's like labour. It stops. Then after a few minutes it hits me - BAM - for a minute of two - then goes away.

Rinse and repeat.

Couldn't you just cut your ear off?

Taking the whole head seems a bit extreme!🤷🏻‍♀️

steff13 · 27/02/2020 22:41

Would a warm compress on the ear help? The drops should start working in a day or two. ☹️ Try not to lose your head over it. 😂

Queenie8 · 27/02/2020 22:41

Rock salt into a sock and tie it, then heat for a min in the microwave (check it's warm, but not too hot) hold onto ear.

Canadianpancake · 27/02/2020 22:42

I've had a really bad ear infection recently and the doctor wasn't overly helpful with regards to pain management, but my pharmacist recommended putting a heat pack or warm hot water bottle I've my ear, it worked wonders.

whyisitsoflammingdifficult · 27/02/2020 22:53

A warm heat pack or hot water bottle should help ease it a bit. Also don’t poke it, and try not to get it wet when you have a bath or shower. Hope you feel better soon, earache is bloody awful

Ingridla · 27/02/2020 23:01

I would go to A&E tbh

Gadgnkk · 27/02/2020 23:03

I'd try and get an appointment with a private ENT, may have to go via private GP. Expensive but worth it. Or an ear clinic where you don't need a referral.

IME, GPs can be worse than useless with ears. I had nine appointments for mine before seeing the ENT who said that everything they had done was wrong and in some cases counterproductive. He solved the problem in 5 mins with the ear vacuum.

Canadianpancake · 27/02/2020 23:04

A&E for an earache that has already been diagnosed and is in the process of being treated? Ok then Grin

DressesWithPocketsRockMyWorld · 27/02/2020 23:06

YANBU earache is fucking hideous. No wonder babies act like total arseholes when they have it.

Verbena87 · 27/02/2020 23:07

My dad had thrush in his ear and nearly lost his hearing. I think industrial doses of canesten and keeping it scrupulously dry kicked it in the end but he was in agony like you describe. It’s rubbish.

MajesticWhine · 27/02/2020 23:14

Drink sherry. Lots of sherry. Works a treat. You will feel like crap in the morning but it will work for now.

DressingGownofDoom · 27/02/2020 23:16

I don't think it's even possible to cut your own head off. You'd surely stop halfway through, having lost power in the cutting arm. What pain relief are you taking?

NoProblem123 · 27/02/2020 23:16

Hot water bottle in a cover and lie with it draped over ear. Worked when I had an ear abscess.

Pumpkintopf · 27/02/2020 23:23

Are you lying down? That increases the pressure in the ear- sitting up or sleeping propped up on pillows may help.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/02/2020 23:55

Cut your ear off then paint a self portrait of your bandaged head.

Worked for Van Gogh

MonsteraCheeseplant · 28/02/2020 06:40

Well it seems that you've tried everything wise so it's your only option now.

I feel for you op, ear ache sucks. Codeine?

MonsteraCheeseplant · 28/02/2020 06:47

This poster raises a good point. Do you have a guillotine?

CareBear50 · 28/02/2020 06:48

I e had so so many problems w my ears. I totally understand..,cutting off head statement.

I've had fungal infection also in ear before.

Canesten drops did the trick but I rem it took quite a while. Cut out sugar. Good luck OP

And people get upset when they have to wait for hours on end to be seen
