Just seen this in the local news that a school has closed in the next town over from me as one of the pupils parents has had a case of Coronavirus confirmed yesterday.

AIBU to be a bit freaked by this?! Too close to home for my liking!

I think things change quite quickly. Initially I was one of the ‘oh it’s just like flu’ brigade. I thought it would pan out like SARS and not really impact us over here. I’ve been following it, reading reports and now I think it is a huge worry.

I don’t think our government have a handle on it at all and I have no idea how the hospitals will cope.

I had a false sense of security after the Brighton man didn’t spread it very far at all, even on the plane. But the Italy situation has changed my opinion.

Snowdropdelight · 27/02/2020 17:16

I've seen dd rushed through a and e straight into oxygen and steroids etc.

It's mild it won't hurt us, but what if dd needs that medication and there is no equipment??

lilgreen · 27/02/2020 17:20

Just heard that some people in China who have had it, are testing positive again!

BrokenMumTeenDD · 27/02/2020 17:20

Delatron, according to me friends who are living in the red zone. Italy has 3 deaths out of over 550 confirmed cases, all elderly & ill.

I've seen bigger figures reported here, but that unfortunately is our media fir you

tallah · 27/02/2020 17:23

@bernardswatchplease how come if pregnant? I wish you hadn't said that as I am pregnant

Delatron · 27/02/2020 17:24

I thought Italy had 12 deaths?

BrokenMumTeenDD · 27/02/2020 17:26

No, that's just our news. Italian new says 3

Floribundance · 27/02/2020 17:31

We’re so far removed from the kind of mass infections that used to be commonplace. Typhoid, cholera, polio, smallpox, Spanish flu. It’s frightening to be reminded of our vulnerability.

AvocadoAdvocate · 27/02/2020 17:36

While it's obviously sensible to be aware and take recommended precautions like washing hands, not touching eyes/mouth/nose, etc, what purpose does panicking serve? So many people on the CV threads panicking which helps nobody. Honestly, what's the point?

GaaaaarlicBread · 27/02/2020 17:38

4 people near me have been isolated with what is thought to be the virus after coming back from Italy . It’s not made it into bbc news yet but locally . I’m pregnant , and not gonna lie I am a bit anxious !

Doobigetta · 27/02/2020 17:39

Re compromise immunity; my brother is currently seriously ill- he’s due to start dialysis next week. His doctors have told him that if cases are diagnosed in his area, they’ll tell him and he’ll need to isolate himself to stay safe. So I think if you were really seriously at risk, you’d know.

I do think that it is very harsh to keep people virtually imprisoned in hotels and on cruise ships, in what must be a very stressful situation, for the sake of a seemingly futile attempt to stop a relatively mild flu spreading.

HasaDigaEebowai · 27/02/2020 17:46

It actually doesn't. Hmm Italy officially has 650 cases of which 35 are currently in a serious or critical state. 17 deaths now in Italy.

But you know what - my mothers brothers cousins next door neighbour went to Italy once on holiday and he says its fine so no need to believe anything any of the experts or the official sources are telling us Hmm

Gadareen · 27/02/2020 17:48

TheOrigBrave Thank you :-)

Doobigetta IT IS NOT FUCKING FLU!

BrokenMumTeenDD · 27/02/2020 17:50

Hasa, my friend lives in the middle of the red zone, so hardly hearsay, she also works on a related field, so has excellent understanding of the details & has posted plenty of articles backing up what she says. Non of which supports the crap posted in our news, or your version of events

peaceanddove · 27/02/2020 17:54

For goodness sake, it's a variant of normal 'flu, it's not Ebola or the Bubonic Plague ffs. Chances are most in the UK will catch it to some degree, run a temperature for a few days, pop some Ibuprofen and totally recover. I couldn't be less worried to be honest and shame on those parents who have allowed their presumably totally healthy and robust children to work themselves up into a panic about catching it. Give you heads a wobble and apply some common sense.

PixieDustt · 27/02/2020 17:54

YANBU

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 27/02/2020 17:59

No it isn’t.

peaceanddove · 27/02/2020 18:02

You can bet that if Meghan Markle announced she was pregnant again then Coronovirus would be shunted well down the pecking order in the news headlines.

Delatron · 27/02/2020 18:02

It really isn’t a variant of the normal flu. People should educate themselves..

RedLentilYellowLentil · 27/02/2020 18:02

You are somewhat immunosuppressed when you're pregnant @tallah, otherwise your body would react to the presence of your baby's paternal dna in your bloodstream. But not to the degree that, say, chemo or transplant patients are immunosuppressed, so try not to worry too much.

Porcupineinwaiting · 27/02/2020 18:04

No, 2 are in Sheffield myrtle

Delatron · 27/02/2020 18:05

Also, I don’t think the U.K. media can manipulate the death figures. If the official death toll in Italy is 17 then that has come from Italy. I doubt friends in the ‘red zone’ know more than official government sources?

BrokenMumTeenDD · 27/02/2020 18:06

^You can bet that if Meghan Markle announced she was pregnant again then Coronovirus would be shunted well down the pecking order in the news headlines.[

Yep, as soon as something else comes along to use as a smoke screen for the shit storm of what our Nazi overlords are up to, you can bet your life on it

cptartapp · 27/02/2020 18:13

I was staying very close to the hotel in Tenerife last week where a case was confirmed and it went into lockdown. I probably ate in restaurants and sat in the airport unknowingly with carriers of it.
It'll be everywhere soon, not if but when. Chill. I'm more at risk of flu.
