JuniperNet · 27/02/2020 14:07

Just seen this in the local news that a school has closed in the next town over from me as one of the pupils parents has had a case of Coronavirus confirmed yesterday.

AIBU to be a bit freaked by this?! Too close to home for my liking!

OP posts:

I'd say I'm in reasonably good health, eat ok, fairly fit, certainly no heart or respiratory problems, but I've had pneumonia twice (age 38 and 42). It's debilitating, hard to get a full breath and can be painful. I'm not panicking, as we haven't got many cases here, but I understand why people would be concerned.

OP, as mentioned join the chat on the thread mentioned above.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/02/2020 14:47

I live in Derbyshire. I think people are overreacting to be honest. If you are generally fit and well no need to worry.

Milkwith1sugar44 · 27/02/2020 14:47

I'm trying not to think about it.
It's so close to home, and there is no way my youngest will survive it if he gets it.

Cuddling57 · 27/02/2020 14:49

@Laiste well said. I was just about to post the same.
I love my 'only the elderly' parents and don't want them to get ill. They have had the flu vaccine to try to prevent getting that. Roll on a vaccine for this.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 27/02/2020 14:49

I have 4 pre-existing conditions, each of which individually would make me high risk. I'm not panicking, but I am getting quite uncomfortable. DH is diabetic and our kids are only 9 and 8. All the stats about it being harmless for most people are not helping.

StealthPolarBear · 27/02/2020 14:51

Does anyone not have any family or close friends who would be in the high risk category?

Kirkman · 27/02/2020 14:51

Its all over the country. I know someone who works in the Infectious Diseases Ward at my local hospital.

If this is yorkshire and NHS I would be interested to know who is saying this.

Because its bollocks. And the person sating it, needs to be spoken to.

HoffiCoffi13 · 27/02/2020 14:51

I’m close by, and am not panicked, but I am a bit perplexed by people saying ‘no need to worry, only the elderly or those with health conditions are dying’.
I’m not elderly, but my grandparents are. I don’t have a health condition, but my daughter is severely asthmatic, and my dad has suffered from recurrent pneumonia.
Surely most of us know people who fit into the ‘at risk’ categories, and that’s why people are worried? Not because they think they’re going to die themselves.

HoffiCoffi13 · 27/02/2020 14:52

X-posted.

HoffiCoffi13 · 27/02/2020 14:52

Or does it not matter if those who are elderly or have pre existing health conditions die?

StealthPolarBear · 27/02/2020 14:53

Sorry that wasn't a reply to UUU but I think she helps make my point. It's all very well saying it's mild in most people. My mum is young and healthy but had pneumonia a couple of years ago which really floored her. Sometimes these things catch even the strong unawares. And lots and lots of people are at risk, they're not some little 'other' group we can ignoee.

StealthPolarBear · 27/02/2020 14:53

Exactly hoffi

TheOrigBrave · 27/02/2020 14:54

Herpesfreesince

But my local schools and surgeries have closed due to Coronavirus

Do you mean 'due to concerns about Coronavirus'?

quirrels · 27/02/2020 14:55

I wonder what exactly counts as "underlying medical conditions "?
On a scale from mild asthma to severe COPD who is at risk?
I have mild asthma and another lung condition. Neither stop me living a normal life but I am prone to chest infections.

Lordfrontpaw · 27/02/2020 14:55

An office next to us has been temporarily closed down because someone is suspected of having it.

Laiste · 27/02/2020 14:57

@Cuddling57 thank you. I posted and then thought i'd get shouted down.

My very frail 82yo DM lives with us. Us being 4 other adults (2who work closely with the public, one of them actually in a Doctors surgery) and a 6 year old who brings home every bloomin' germ going. It's already a bit of a nightmare trying to shield my mum a bit.

RedLentilYellowLentil · 27/02/2020 15:00

Its all over the country. I know someone who works in the Infectious Diseases Ward at my local hospital. There are cases there. There are cases the next town over.

I think you'd better get in touch with a news agency @Witchofzog as you're obviously better informed than everyone else in the country.

dustibooks · 27/02/2020 15:00

4 out of 5 of us in this family are immunocompromised in one way or another. I am starting to get ever so slightly on edge now.

HairyFloppins · 27/02/2020 15:01

It's got me a bit twitchy. I am 24 miles from there.

I would imagine it 's all over the UK now though.

purpleboy · 27/02/2020 15:07

Exactly Hoffi
3 people in my house are in the at risk category. I think we're pretty justified to be worrying about it.
It's such an ignorant comment to say the fit and healthy don't need to worry, as if we're all so self absorbed we only give a shit about ourselves.Hmm

Witchofzog · 27/02/2020 15:10

It's not bollocks. There absolutely are cases in the Infectious Diseases Ward. All info is available online if you don't believe me.

dementedma · 27/02/2020 15:11

My brother is in China, a bit further North than Wuhan. Other than having to wear a mask and have his temp taken regularly, everything is fine. Please try and keep it in perspective. Its not the Spanish flu or Ebola.

myrtleWilson · 27/02/2020 15:12

Yorkshire doesn't have one of the designated hospitals though does it? All cases are handled by the four designated hospitals (2 in London, Liverpool and Newcastle)

justcleanyourbloodyteeth · 27/02/2020 15:15

@Witchofzog as of 9 minutes ago there were 15 confirmed cases in the UK (BBC News website). Which bit of the internet are you looking at?

Welshwabbit · 27/02/2020 15:16

Two of the Diamond Princess patients are in the Royal Hallamshire in Sheffield. They are counted in the total of 15 confirmed cases in the UK.
