Corona faker?

A person at work has been on holiday abroad - Thailand - has come back and elected to isolate because they say they may have been in contact with someone with Corona. They have no symptoms but have self signed off for 2 weeks (paid) meaning others are having to do their work. they are posting on FB etc about how they are doing their decorating and catching up with stuff in their two weeks. Their 'sick' record is poor but apparently this wont count against them. can we all just do this?

@DameHannahRelf, the virus can live on surfaces for nine days, depending on the conditions.

I'm shocked that Zara Phillips and Mike Tindal chose to make it so public that they aren't self isolating.

nadian · 27/02/2020 11:28

Self-isolating also means they should not go out to buy paint, brushes, .. groceries, physically. Order online.

hula008 · 27/02/2020 11:29

I think if anyone chooses to go abroad now and returns and self isolates it should be unpaid though.

And if they choose to come into work and infect everyone else? There are 40 cases in Thailand in a population of 70 million. It's not locked down, if you have a flight booked you won't get a refund if you choose not to travel.

EmmaBridgewater20 · 27/02/2020 11:32

Well it’s was going to happen wasn’t it!

rebecca102 · 27/02/2020 11:34

I'd rather them not come into work tbh

Butchyrestingface · 27/02/2020 11:35

Clearly a very industrious person in other regards. Grin

The present advice is only to self isolate if you have a temperature or symptoms

Isn't that the official advice? Been in contact with someone with the virus, self isolate two weeks?

Nothing in the advice says they shouldn't enjoy the two free weeks off Grin

Brettney · 27/02/2020 11:43

@hula008 this could go on for years, it will get worse, businesses cannot sustain to finitely give people 2 weeks off paid who choose to now travel knowing the risks. So yes, they should be unpaid, if they choose to work also unpaid so they will likely agree that it is better to stay home.

hula008 · 27/02/2020 11:47

Sorry - the only way to guarantee people will take time off is to pay them. Unless you want to infect the entire workplace and have to pay everyone's sick pay 🤷‍♀️

Cohle · 27/02/2020 11:50

Plenty of people went to Italy/Tenerife before news of the outbreaks there were known. It seems unduly harsh to financially penalise people for choices that were perfectly reasonable at the time they made them.

Not only that but you risk people who have been exposed not following quarantines because they simply can't afford to.

Brettney · 27/02/2020 11:50

Sadly it is as people are selfish, and their holidays are more important to them than any one else. Different if it's to attend a family funeral or something, but it's selfish.

Brettney · 27/02/2020 11:51

@Cohle I agree, but people that choose to travel now and beyond, knowing the risk.

BrendasUmbrella · 27/02/2020 11:54

His whole family has to sit in the house and not leave for two weeks?! I'd be climbing the walls after two days.

woodchuck99 · 27/02/2020 11:55

It won't go on for years because they would develop a vaccine. They need to reduce the number of infections and therefore deaths in the meantime.

Mooserp · 27/02/2020 11:57

I don't know what the official recommendations are at the moment. But I think if you are staying at home and being paid then you should be doing something work related if possible - online training?

Brettney · 27/02/2020 12:01

@woodchuck99 which will likely take years before it is in circulation, yes.

RB68 · 27/02/2020 12:09

They are not ill so shouldn't be able to sign off - get them some work together and send it over I say

CanNotSeeTheWoodForTheTrees · 27/02/2020 12:10

My colleague with whom I share a small office with is due back to work on Monday after 2 weeks in Thailand.

My Lymphocyte tests are currently 0.24. I'm worried about them coming back ! I hope they stay off.

Fatasfooook · 27/02/2020 12:12

Yes op, off you go on holiday to a corona virus hotspot then come back and take full advantage of self isolation if that’s what you are envious of! Yes, you may die but hey, you can get that bathroom painted!

woodchuck99 · 27/02/2020 12:13

@woodchuck99 which will likely take years before it is in circulation, yes.

Do you mean it will take years for a vaccine to be in circulation? I don't agree at all. Once the trials have confirmed any vaccine is safe it will be widely circulated. The main delay will be the trials to assess the efficacy and safety.

Brettney · 27/02/2020 12:15

If you are being pedantic, yes I included the entire process.

ChocolateQuiltedShitPig · 27/02/2020 12:27

I can see where you’re coming from but would you rather they came into work and potentially infected lots of people

I would rather they didn't travel to such countries during a fucking outbreak tbh

Cohle · 27/02/2020 12:29

I would rather they didn't travel to such countries during a fucking outbreak tbh

But what do you mean by "such countries"? A week ago no one could have predicted a major outbreak in Northern Italy.

Your outrage is misplaced and unworkable.
