Tenerife - to go or not to go?!

TenerifeGrief · 27/02/2020 07:19

We have a holiday booked to Cost Adeje, flying out this weekend. We are two healthy adults, a toddler and baby.

I’m not overly worried about Coronavirus per se (and would 100% go if it was just us two) but I am concerned about getting quarantined in my hotel room with the children as well as spending the whole week talking solely about Coronavirus! What would you do in my situation?

YABU - Just go!
YANBU - Cancel and go to Centre Parcs instead!

I would go and pack extra supplies just in case. They seem to be doing a good job of containing it in Tenerife.

Roselilly36 · 27/02/2020 07:40

We are in a similar position, booked to go to Spain next month, happy to go, but the quarantine issue is what is bothering us. The way things are going at the moment its looking like we will cancel, regardless of government advice, and if we lose money. DH has his own business and would need to get back on time.

Wickedwoo · 27/02/2020 07:44

After watching interview on GMB this morning with lady in tenerife i personally wouldn't want to go. She is stuck in her hotel room with 2 young children and her elderly in laws whilst some guests are still using the buffet and not taking precautions despite someone already testing positive for coronavirus. They were due to fly home yesterday and in her words she feels abandoned by the travel company and has had very little contact support or advice off them. I really felt for her and would not want to be in their position

Wineislifex · 27/02/2020 07:49

We’re due to go soon too, unless the government issues a warning against flying to the area, if you cancel you wouldn’t be entitled to a refund and it wouldn’t be covered by travel insurance either as it goes down as disinterest to travel (according to google anyway)

Hopefully it’s just contained to that one hotel, if they declare cases in others hotels and the airport then they may cancel the flights. I keep thinking, well they had that one case in York and everyone else was fine and the city didn’t get shut down so hopefully we should be fine. It’s the idea of getting stuck in the hotel room for weeks and then isolated on arrival back to the UK that worries me! DH would go stir crazy and he’s self employed so we can’t afford a long period of time away!

MrsJackRackham · 27/02/2020 07:54

I'm booked to go next week, SC in a private apartment so no lock down fears. It's just me and DP, both healthy. It's the flight back that concerns me the most, close proximity with that many people for hours Confused. We're just keeping an eye on the news before making a decision.

Cantdecidewhich · 27/02/2020 12:10

We came back last night and everyone is carrying on as normal, I would still go

BabyWenger · 27/02/2020 12:13

I'd still go. Stop at a supermarket on the way from the airport and buy a load of bottled water and snacks for the hotel room just in case, and be vigilant with had sanitizer.

Have a lovely time!

RowenaRavenclawsLostDiaphragm · 27/02/2020 12:38

I'm here in Tenerife now, we flew out yesterday and everyone is enjoying their holiday and carrying on like normal.

I brought extra medication with me just in case.

Honestly, you wouldn't even know about the hotel in lockdown if it weren't for the British press.

TenerifeGrief · 28/02/2020 10:40

Reassuring to hear from those that are there or have recently come back. Thank you. Poll is currently 52% go! Smile

No it's selfish and stupid.

MummyToBe89 · 28/02/2020 14:28

We're due to go in 6 weeks with our (will then be) 4 and a half month old and unless the company cancels it I fully intend on going. People have had Coronavirus and not even known they've had it. The flu kills more people each year than coronavirus does. I think the whole thing is being blown out of proportion.

I'll just be taking a large bottle of hand sanitiser which I would have anyway. Go and enjoy yourself! Then come back and give me some tips on what to do there with a baby :)

Scbchl · 28/02/2020 14:31

I would go. It's one hotel.

NathanNathan · 28/02/2020 14:37

Please stop saying this, it isn't true.

While we don't need to panic, the death rate for flu is 0.2. Coronavirus is around 2%.

Oblomov20 · 28/02/2020 14:48

Friends of my boss are still stuck in Tenerife and were supposed to fly home last weekend.

roseelizabeth · 28/02/2020 14:56

My parents have desperately been trying to cancel a cruise to Asia but have been forced to either lose £8k or go. Their biggest fear is being quarantined. I feel the tour operators are at fault for continuing to send people to regions where the disease is clearly spreading. It's a case of greed over health sadly.

Wineislifex · 28/02/2020 15:30

I think the tour operators won’t do anything unless forced by the government as they’d lose a hell of a lot of money, but morally they should have a duty of care to their customers, especially the vulnerable ones!

Angbunnyboo · 28/02/2020 15:33

We got back on Tuesday afternoon, the same day they quarantined the hotel. It was absolutely business as usual everywhere in Tenerife, and in fact the dust storm from the Sahara on Saturday/Sunday caused more of an issue than the coronavirus.

I'd go.

Cornettoninja · 28/02/2020 15:38

The flu kills more people each year than coronavirus

Please don’t make up ‘facts’. There’s enough misinformation floating about without adding to it. We have no idea what the Yearly comparison with flu would be considering it was only discovered three months ago (estimation).

OP on balance I think I would go but I would be extra vigilant on hygiene and try to keep away from shared facilities as much as possible.

Melanie7788 · 28/02/2020 15:42

I would go. Tenerife is an island, so I don't think, the risk is so high. And I agree that packing extra supplies just in case is a good idea.

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 28/02/2020 15:44

The flu kills more people each year than coronavirus does

That's just incorrect

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 28/02/2020 15:51

Depends on your hotel. I would at the very least pack a lot of supplies just in case.

Unless you stay locked in your own property for the next few months, not sure the risk is any different anyway.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 28/02/2020 15:52

The flu kills more people each year than coronavirus does

That's just incorrect

then please quote numbers.
But quote "direct" victims though, not the ones who died of something else by lack of medical care, being redirected elsewhere (which is what we have in the UK anyway)

blue25 · 28/02/2020 15:55

I wouldn’t go because I’d be too worried to enjoy the holiday. I’d be especially worried about getting stuck over there with 2 small children.

We’ve changed our plans and holidaying in the UK instead.

recycledbottle · 28/02/2020 16:04

the virus is in the UK now aswell so don't see the difference between Centre Parcs and Tenerife.

bulletjournalbilly · 28/02/2020 16:08

No one wants to be stuck abroad and not get home @recycledbottle
