Tenerife - to go or not to go?!

We have a holiday booked to Cost Adeje, flying out this weekend. We are two healthy adults, a toddler and baby.

I’m not overly worried about Coronavirus per se (and would 100% go if it was just us two) but I am concerned about getting quarantined in my hotel room with the children as well as spending the whole week talking solely about Coronavirus! What would you do in my situation?

YABU - Just go!
YANBU - Cancel and go to Centre Parcs instead!

We're due to go at Easter and will re-consider it. The problem is the lack of facilities in the room, somewhere where you might end up being marooned. The only sink is in the bathroom, the only "catering" facilities are a kettle (I think we get a fridge too), the only places to sit are on the double bed or the two sofas which will also double as beds for the DC, the only distraction provided will be the TV and whatever channels the hotel subscribed too, wi-fi can be slow or interrupted in my experience so it would be two weeks of Uno, Pass the Pigs and card games. And we could be completely fit & healthy whilst having to go through this. I have two lively DC. I might get lucky and end up on a ground floor but otherwise I couldn't even tell them to do star jumps or something to burn off some energy as it would disturb the people in the room below.
If we were at home, we have space and options. If one of us were to come down with it, they could stay in a bedroom whilst the rest of us bimble around in the rest of the house. In a hotel room, the ill person would be right there with us and being disturbed by us.

It's the plane that would worry me the most, not the destination. I usually seem to catch a sniffle or cold after a plane journey anyway. Germs can spread very quickly on a plane! I was due to book a holiday this week but hanging on now.

Noconceptofnormal · 29/02/2020 08:09

Although the reasons behind us not booking a holiday this year are shit, I'm actually very grateful that we haven't been able to and so don't have to make that choice.

In this situation my husband would definitely want to still go and I wouldn't. If it was up to me we wouldn't go but I expect we'd end up going but trying to take as many precautions as possible. Any meds or things like contact lenses, take enough to last you if you were quarantined.

We got back from Tenerife last Friday, so just before the case became known. I'd happily go back again now, in fact I've just booked our Feb 2021 break.
As a family we are very hot on hand washing and using sanitiser when in public places, that's the key I think.... Go, enjoy but make sure you keep everyone on top of the hand washing x

I don't holiday in hotels but if I did I'd be seeing if I could change to self catering apartment. I'd want to go but like you could imagine being stuck in a room with the children if it all goes pear shaped.

SubordinateThatClause · 29/02/2020 08:57

I definitely wouldn't go. There are cases all over associated with people returning from Tenerife.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 29/02/2020 09:04

While we don't need to panic, the death rate for flu is 0.2. Coronavirus is around 2%

We don't actually even know that it is yet do we? Because there could be thousands of unreported cases which were mild and people recovered from like they would a cold without knowing they'd contracted Coronavirus.

cptartapp · 29/02/2020 09:08

I was in Adele ran past that hotel every morning. 25C most days. I'd go back like a shot.

cptartapp · 29/02/2020 09:09

^last week that should say

Wineislifex · 29/02/2020 10:50

We’ve cancelled ours this morning, due to go in a couple weeks, just put a huge dampener on it I wasn’t looking forward to going, I was worried about the baby and getting put in isolation. I just think I wouldn’t enjoy it I’d be constantly worrying!

TenerifeGrief · 29/02/2020 18:41

Still an almost 50/50 split on the voting! As the only cases reported to date in Tenerife have been linked solely to one group in one hotel we have (pending any drastic overnight change) decided to go. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and comments. Smile

Can I please ask how it is going/went? We're due to fly out next week and can't decide whether to go or not right now.
I'm swaying to not going right now, seems panic and cases are increasing daily. How's the atmosphere in Tenerife?

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 06/03/2020 07:46

I have 4 sets of couples who are friends of ours they went last week and flew home yesterday ..they went to costa adeje and its all business as usual ..they had a fab time and are all looking fit and well and a bit brown ..the bastards!!!! I am due to go in August and unless told not to travel by the government I fullly intend to go....

GiGi18 · 06/03/2020 08:30

Thanks @sally that's positive. I just need to make a decision as I keep changing my mind. More worried about being quarantined. We are self catering too which I know lessens our risk as not staying in a huge hotel

TenerifeGrief · 09/03/2020 00:35

Just arrived home! Had a bloody brilliant time! It was so warm and sunny and lovely ...

Costa Adeje (and local area) seemed completely ‘business as usual’. No masks. No panic buying. No talk of Coronavirus at all. I’d have loved to have stayed longer. Plane out and back were both at least 90% full so we’re not the only ones who risked it Smile

Pleased you had a nice time.

MummyToBe89 · 10/03/2020 12:13

Have you been advised to self quarantine @TenerifeGrief ?

We go in 5 weeks and I feel like my boss isn't happy about it in case I need to self quarantine on return.

TenerifeGrief · 10/03/2020 14:37

@mummytobe89 Nope. I’m on maternity leave and my DH’s boss is fine with him going in (he took his work laptop on holiday with us in case we got quarantined whist over there!) I emailed the organisers of the two baby classes I attend and explained where I’d been and both were happy for me to attend too (I’ve paid up front so they wouldn’t lose money if I didn’t go) Have been trawling the news and no more cases have been confirmed in Tenerife outside the ones linked to that specific hotel. I think it is fine to travel there.
