I'm blatantly posting here for traffic, sorry!
I've decided I'm going to invest in some period pants. I'm 45 and I've had enough of standard sanpro. I've tried a mooncup but didn't get on with it so want a good eco-friendly alternative.

I have one day when I'm heavy-ish, usually day two, and then the rest of the time my flow is pretty light. So I'm wondering on the light days if I can get away with wearing a good quality pair for a good number of hours, so avoiding having to change the pants out of the house. Or is that just ridiculous and disgusting??

I'm willing to spend money on really decent ones.

So come and tell me your experiences, please.

AIBU to think this could replace all my other sanpro?

Ooh no advice as I've not tried them but following this thread as I'm curious. I find sanitary towels uncomfortable but my period is very heavy for the first 2-3 days so I've been nervous to try the pants.

Whathappenedtothelego · 26/02/2020 17:40

I have Modibodi and Cheeky Wipes.

Modibodi are waaaaay better imo. They do last all night, or a day out of the house at a push. But I prefer to use a washable pad for a few hours, then remove and just wear the pants for the rest of the day on heavy days. Lighter days I just wear the pants all day no problem. They don't feel wet.

They do take quite a long time to dry though. I have 3 pairs of Modibodi and 6 cheeky wipes (and 2 washable pads)

If I was buying again, would rather get 6 Modibodi and 3 washable pads.

justcleanyourbloodyteeth · 26/02/2020 20:55

Thanks @Whathappenedtothelego. I've had a look at the Modibodi website, they're quite an investment, aren't they? If you bought 6 now, what mix of absorbencies would you get?

Not goady at all, I just don’t understand them, so it’s like bleeding into your knickers? Why don’t they feel wet?

Probably in the same way as sanitary towels don’t feel wet.
I’ve been wondering about these too. I might have to invest.

Guacamole · 26/02/2020 21:10

@Whathappenedtothelego
Can I ask do you know if the not black, but coloured and patterned modibodi period pants stain? I would imagine they do.

Lucy40ishere · 26/02/2020 21:11

I’ve got 6 pairs of the cheeky wipes pants. They are more reasonably priced but on heavier days they would probably need changing twice if used standalone ( I am still using tampons now & again). The problems I have with them are that I find soaking before washing a bit messy & I also find the odour quite bad which I’ve never noticed with other sanpro.

ArthurShelbysTash · 26/02/2020 21:20

I use cheeky wipes. I start my cycle with just the pants and then as I get heavier I use washable pads. I usually start the day with cheeky wipes pants plus pad and remove the pad half way through the day.
They haven't let me down yet!
I have found one style are slightly smaller on the backside - I prefer the sporty style (sporty I am not but they are better proportioned for my ass)
I rinse them in cold water then leave them in a clip tub until I put a load of washing on. As long as they're not washed with fabric conditioner, you're good!

FinallyMrsE · 26/02/2020 21:34

I have 10 pairs of tulip period pants along with 4 reusable pads (from amazon) and I’ve not had a problem with just the pants even on heavy days but I use the pads in addition to them if I am out for the day so I can use the pad then remove it and then just use the pants as I don’t want to have to change pants whilst out and about.

I have used them for around 6 months and would never go back to normal sanitary protection.

(Oh and if they are rinsed with cold water before the wash there is no staining)

WhoDisNewPhone · 27/02/2020 01:09

My almost teen daughter has just started her periods and is trying ModiBodi. She said the boyleg ones feel really secure and comfortable. No leaks yet but this is only the 3rd time of using.
She also has an activewear pair for dance, so they sit under a leotard.
To wash I soak in cold water for a while, then stick in machine.
All good so far.

CocoaLipbalm · 27/02/2020 01:13

Boy-leg ModiBodi pants worn by both teen DD and I, plus WearEmOut pads.

Easily laundered, dried and so comfortable.

I’ve used a Mooncup since 2005, but added reusable pants and pads when things became erratic with perimenopause.

Daughter wanted to try pants and pads too and much prefers them.

MissGuernsey · 27/02/2020 01:48

Cheeky pants - What is cheeky about them?

Cheeky wine?
Cheeky chocolate?

Yuck.

Cheeky smell? God they must stink. Just use tampons.

Guineapigbridge · 27/02/2020 01:58

I want to know, are they sweaty or itchy? I only wear cotton pants as I am prone to itchy/sweatiness.... this is the only thing putting me off buying some modibodi.
Would love to know from the MN hivemind.

Guacamole · 27/02/2020 06:08

I think I’m going to give them a try. Thanks for answering my question.

Ulysses · 27/02/2020 06:19

I rate these ones @guineapigbrigade

Bamboo Period Pants

They are made from bamboo and are supersoft and suitable for heavy days. Saying that I am a size 12 and got the medium and they cut in a bit so will try getting a couple of pairs of the large ones next time.

I bought these for lighter days too and wouldn't rate them as being quite as comfortable even though they aren't as thick. Link 2

Stickybeaksid · 27/02/2020 06:22

Not itchy or sweaty. The coloured Modibodi ones have a black lining so they don’t stain. I have a few pairs which I use with washable pads for really heavy days. They are an investment but totally worth it. I bought a pair every month or two over a period of time

Rahul88 · 27/02/2020 06:40

I have some Modibodi. They are good, comfy, not itchy and no wet feeling. Unless they’ve changed recently it does say not to soak them.

Marmit · 27/02/2020 06:44

They aren’t wet, itchy or sweaty, and they don’t smell. They are lined with a fabric which allows moisture to pass through one way and not the other. It’s exactly the same as wearing a sanitary pad in that respect, only significantly more comfortable.

I use thinx and they never feel wet. I have heavy flow on the first two days and I find even the most absorbent won’t last a whole day at my heaviest flow. I pair the pants with a pad for the first few hours and then when the pad needs removed just stick with the pants. They are fine overnight even on my heaviest flow. It’s not a perfect solution but it’s better than constant pads as far as I’m concerned.

I can’t use tampons or moon cups, so this is the best solution I have found for me. I find them so much more comfortable and convenient than pads.

BeardieWeirdie · 27/02/2020 07:07

missguernsey Cheeky Pants are made by the same people as Cheeky Wipes, the reusable baby wipes people, so cheeky as in originally to do with bottoms.

I make reusable cloth sanitary pads, easy to unpop and change when out and about. I wouldn’t want to be taking off my shoes and jeans in public loos in order to change my pants. No staining, rinse in cold water and rub some hand soap in before washing at 40’C with normal laundry. Hot water sets stains in.

ArthurShelbysTash · 27/02/2020 07:08

@MissGuernsey yeah. We all absolutely stink. That's why so many people are using them now.
Educate yourself. Some people can't "just use tampons".

Notsureiftheringistoomuch · 27/02/2020 08:03

It will depend how heavy your flow is. Mine was average. I wouldn't wear them during the day unless you change them often as they can get a bit smelly. They are so comfy to wear overnight though, that's what I did + then shower in the morning Smile I used to use cloth pads during the day (I just let them stain because I didn't care lol)

Poing · 27/02/2020 08:36

At what age would you suggest using a moon cup? Ideally would like DD to start with reusable pads/undies but would like to give more protection for when it gets heavier.

Pinkandpurplehairedlady · 27/02/2020 08:41

I use cheeky wipes pants and they are great, no leaking and very comfortable to wear. On my heaviest days I do as pp have suggested and wear a washable pad for the first part of the day and then take it off and just use the pants. I don’t soak mine but I do put them on a rinse cycle before adding the rest of my washing.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 27/02/2020 08:45

I doubt very much people are using them of they smell, what a ridiculous post.

I am pretty much through the menopause now (I hope!) but I'll be buying these if I start up again as my mooncup isn't comfortable anymore.

dorisdog · 27/02/2020 09:02

Thinx pants. I've been using them for two years. They are really good. Expensive, but so worth it. I hate mooncups and these are much better. Heavy days I can wear one all day and change when i get home. You wash them in cold water as it gets the blood out better than hot water. I rinse immediately then run through a cold wash on the machine.

Only time I don't use them is if I'm travelling for work.
