To think dieting in the winter is impossible

littleblackdress04 · 26/02/2020 16:33

I could do with losing a stone - but I’m finding it really hard! I love veg stews, soups etc but with toast and butter in winter! I certainly don’t want a salad!! I want to eat all the time at the moment not be sensible - is it the weather?!

Aibu to think it’s hard work losing weight in winter!!!

OP posts:
MrsBeanHead · 26/02/2020 16:39

I find it much harder, yes. Nigh on impossible for me to do low carbing when it’s cold and dark (and that’s the easiest way for me to lose weight).

I usually gain half a stone between Nov-Feb, but lose it again in the Spring when salads and brisk walks become more appealing.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 26/02/2020 16:41

You don't have to eat salad to lose weight. To lose weight you need to reduce your intake, watch your portion sizes and be more active. I could do with losing 2-3 stone and am doing it steadily by eating what I normally do but less of it.

Bluntness100 · 26/02/2020 16:43

No of course not, it’s worrying you think you need to eat salad to loose weight. You can eat all the things you list just made healthily and with the appropriate portion size.

RoyalChocolat · 26/02/2020 16:43

I don't find it more difficult than in warmer months. I just make sure I keep warm after meals as I tend to feel very cold after eating. I drink lots of black coffee (decaf). I actually prefer when it is not too hot - it is easier to exercise. I live in the south of France and I find it impossible to do a workout when it is over 30 degrees outside.

Enchiladas · 26/02/2020 16:45

Yanbu but definitely not as hard (impossible) as dieting while pregnant and on steroids Sad

ilovesooty · 26/02/2020 16:45

The toast and butter isn't compulsory because it's winter.

Squirrelblanket · 26/02/2020 16:46

I find it much easier in winter, in summer I hear the beer garden calling! Grin

Bluntness100 · 26/02/2020 16:46

Blaming winter is just another excuse

Just own it. Honestly.

Elouera · 26/02/2020 16:47

Depends on which diet you are trying to follow? I've lost 10kg on a keto/low carb diet I started in October, so its certainly possible. I still get to eat yummy stews and hot meals too.

If you are trying to cut calories, maybe its the amount of stew, fatty meat and the amount of bread and butter that is stopping you losing more?

EssentialHummus · 26/02/2020 16:48

What bluntness said.

Have veg / broth based soups, ditch the bread and butter. In summer it’ll be ice cream / beer / whatever.

BabyWenger · 26/02/2020 16:49

I need to lose a stone before my wedding but no way that's happening while it's less than 5 degrees outside.

I'm solidly on stew and dumplings, yorkshire puds and pasta until these arsehole storms and rains fuck off.

lazylinguist · 26/02/2020 16:50

Blaming winter is just another excuse

^This. Eating hot and (nutritious) filling food because it's winter is understandable. Claiming that the toast and butter is down to it being winter - not so reasonable.

HulksPurplePanties · 26/02/2020 16:50

Dieting doesn't work. So YABU. Season doesn't matter.

Doje · 26/02/2020 16:51

I'm with you OP. In the summer I just ate BBQ meat with a tonne of salad day after day and it was lovely. Trying to do the same (after putting on a little over Christmas!) but with veg instead of salad and it's much slower going. The winter meals for some reason don't seem to lend themselves to the same format.

AnotherMurkyDay · 26/02/2020 16:53

I've lost over 2 stone this Autumn/Winter. Christmas usually sets me back a little. But I have enough weight to lose that I am going to have to be prioritising it in every season this year.

MrsBeanHead · 26/02/2020 16:53

Well, season matters to me.

Winter = want to snuggle up and eat carbs
Spring/Summer/Autumn = feel more like eating fruit, salad, protein without carbs, sweet tooth disappears etc

We aren’t all the same.

AnotherMurkyDay · 26/02/2020 16:55

The summer means BBQs and ice cream to me, and the winter means cakes, puddings with custard and stew with dumplings. Every day means cheese, chocolate and crisps. I'm eating all those things and losing weight, I've also eaten all those things and gained weight. It's about portion control for me but obviously everybody is different.

Bluntness100 · 26/02/2020 16:55

But you can snuggle up and eat carbs. And still loose weight.

The trick to loosing weight is reducing your calorie intake below what you expend.

You don’t need to snuggle up and over eat them. No one does. No matter what season it is.

Paintforkitchen · 26/02/2020 16:59

Yes I know exactly what you mean op. The same happens to me. I always weigh less in the summer than I do in the winter!

WalkingDeadTrainee · 26/02/2020 17:02

It's not the weather. There are people permanently living in cold climate.

@Bluntness100 is absolutely right

WalkingDeadTrainee · 26/02/2020 17:05

Switch hot choc for GrogGrin
It's essentially rum with hot water, rum and cinnamon if you fancy. Pretty low cal compare to hot chocolate and more fun

DickAmbush · 26/02/2020 17:07

I know what you mean OP. I'm originally from a country that's exceptionally cold and dark in the winter (far more so than here, and that weather goes on for much longer), but I get seasonal bouts of depression here in the UK - I have absolutely no energy and crave carbs/sugar constantly.

I eat healthily the majority of the time, don't like sugary drinks or have a massive sweet tooth, but the winter sends my eating habits haywire.

RhymingRabbit3 · 26/02/2020 17:12

I find winter much easier actually. Home made food, things like soup which can be very healthy. Much easier than the summer where its BBQs, weddings, holidays, ice creams, fizzy drinks...

Dixiechickonhols · 26/02/2020 17:13

I started SlimmingWorld January 2019 and lost 19 lb first 6 weeks. Lamb Casserole, omelette and jacket potatoes with beans & cheese, roast dinners and cottage pie were eaten a lot. Went on to lose 5 stone in 8 months. You can lose weight on comforting food.

Bluntness100 · 26/02/2020 17:25

There is always an excuse to be had if you’re looking for one to make it not your fault.

Much better to own it and say, I don’t want to diet right now
