To think dieting in the winter is impossible

I could do with losing a stone - but I’m finding it really hard! I love veg stews, soups etc but with toast and butter in winter! I certainly don’t want a salad!! I want to eat all the time at the moment not be sensible - is it the weather?!

Aibu to think it’s hard work losing weight in winter!!!

The toast and butter isn't compulsory because it's winter

It most definitely is. So are buttered crumpets.

I snack on fruit in the summer but definitely crave warm comfort food in the winter.

SpoonBlender · 26/02/2020 17:38

It's definitely harder psychologically, but you can make stews and sturdy soups and such lower-cal without removing their comfort factor. Less cheese, no cream, less butter/oil, less potato. Make them a bit thicker - even just less water - to make up for it.

I've stopped buttering (well, olive spreading) things. Saves 50+ kcal per slice of toast.

Waitingforadulthood · 26/02/2020 17:41

Impossible? No. Not at all.

Utterly miserable and robbing yourself of life's pleasures? Yes. Yanbu. IMO anyway

Surfer25 · 26/02/2020 18:05

You can have hot buttered toast as still lose weight.

Calculate the calories on two pieces of toast and butter and you'll find the problem is everything else you're eating

littleblackdress04 · 26/02/2020 19:05

Oh god- I was joking about the salads @Bluntness100 🙈

Weight loss can be challenging at any time.

raspberryk · 26/02/2020 19:13

I've lost over half a stone in the past 3 weeks with ww, it's hard for me all the time but no worse in winter.

supercalifragilistic123 · 26/02/2020 19:14

I find it impossible in the winter, as soon as spring comes it almost falls off.
I think the cold weather makes you eat more!

I've lost 3st 3 times and a stone here and there. Always in spring/summer.

I'm waiting for spring to buy some much needed new clothes!

thecatsthecats · 26/02/2020 19:16

@Bluntness100

I have been losing weight for two years and six stone and I both agree and disagree with what you say.

Yes, it's theoretically possible to keep up the same regime all year around.

I have tracking data that shows that my weightloss slows and sometimes halts in the winter months. Even if I adjust portions and keep up a regular exercise regime. Every year I have to adjust my work hours because I struggle immensely to get up in the dark. I also have a seasonal tendency to migraines that I'm smack bang in the middle of. My only significant winter weightloss came when I spent a month in the southern hemisphere.

Yes, it's easy to be straight forward and let's be honest, a little smug and trite. But I don't think it's irrelevant to look at the bigger picture of biology, willpower and the seasonality of weight loss and gain across numerous species, not just our own.

damnthatanxiety · 26/02/2020 19:17

yes, I find it much harder. During spring and summer I don't really eat simple carbs. In winter I crave them. It's pretty normal, whatever other pp are saying.

UncleHerbie · 26/02/2020 19:17

I've been going to slimming world for six months. It's been slow and steady but with a few weeks where I've either maintained or gained 1 or 1/2 lbs ... I didn't go for a couple weeks after the last 1lb weight gain, and was dreading the next weigh in ... blow me: I lost 6lbs in two weeks and am now back on track. If you're doing slimming world, super speed foods are the way forward (eg, apples n oranges for breakfast)

I now have 10lbs to reach my target

Good luck OP, you can crack this 🙏🏾

PrincessHoneysuckle · 26/02/2020 19:36

I need to lose a stone and I'm my 3rd day of trying.Ive discovered eating pickled onions in the evening kills my appetite for calorific food.Only 10 calories per 60g.

PumpkinP · 26/02/2020 19:59

I’m confused by this as I find it easier in the winter. Summer for me is more harder as it’s bbqs ice cream, in the winter I can hide under my baggy jumpers and coats where as in the summer I lose motivation by not being where I want to be already. I like to diet over the winter so I’ve lost it by summer

AnotherMurkyDay · 26/02/2020 23:54

@PrincessHoneysuckle

My fridge is full of pickled everything for this very reason. Cockles, mussels, gherkins, beetroot, onions, sauerkraut. When I'm feeling peckish I just get a plate full. It isn't too terrible a substitute for the crisps, cheese and crackers I used to eat.

HeretoThereandBackAgain · 27/02/2020 00:22

I disagree. I’m much more active in winter than in the sweltering heat of summer. I usually lose weight between October and April, then it creeps back on between May and September!

Blackandgreenteas · 27/02/2020 00:30

I do seem to go in a yearly cycle weight wise - thinking “woohoo I seem good at this weight loss thing” in summer and “oh snot I’ve piled it back on” in winter.
