AIBU to ask ‘what would make you go vegan’?

Tangentially inspired by another thread, I wonder if there are specific obstacles standing in the way of people choosing to go vegan, and if so what they are?

I tend to presume that if perfect, indistinguishable replicas for meat / dairy / eggs etc could be created then virtually everyone would go vegan, but I would be interested in finding out if that’s actually the case!

Pasta is vegan though nope, you use egg making it

bollocks, most dried pasta in the shops is egg free and vegan.

Very happy with a vegan meal, but I would never go vegan by choice. What would make me go vegan? Meat and dairy being totally unavailble.

gospelsinger · 27/02/2020 21:42

Hmmmm! There's a delicious looking pepperoni pizza being advertised to me right now.

Marmit · 27/02/2020 21:45

Focaccia with melted cheese sounds like an abomination, sorry!

Marmit · 27/02/2020 21:46

@squeekums fresh pasta is made with egg, but dried pasta is vegan.

HenHarrier · 27/02/2020 21:48

Dried pasta is just durum wheat and water, fresh pasta is made from 00 grade flour and egg.

Well there ya go, granted i more often buy the fresh chilled pasta and dont read labels of dried pasta or DP makes pasta fresh

dont be sorry, im a cheese whoar and eat it on everything
Vegemite and jam on toast with lashings of butter is what makes people cringe

The meat substitutes have had a hard time on here, but I really like Quorn and veggie sausages.

The cruelty in animal butchery ( for dairy & meat) is too much for me.

OP - great thread. Very civilised debate. Room for all opinions 👍

Nothing. I’ve tried three times, and IBS means grains are a no-go for me, plus I’m also celiac. Plus I’m just a couple of notches below diabetes if I don’t watch my carb intake. I’m an endocrine and autoimmune disaster.

I basically eat meat, fish, vegetables, occasional fruit, nuts and feel good eating this way.

ActualHornist · 28/02/2020 00:48

@Marmit lots of your examples sound lovely and many I already eat.

But I still wouldn’t voluntarily give up meat or other animal products.

Good question! I've been vegetarian for years and have flirted with the idea of becoming vegan but never had a real inclination to do it.

I think I'm not totally convinced that it's all that bad because I only buy organic eggs/milk etc. This is possibly completely ignorant on my part and I'm willing to be persuaded otherwise.
