Eat Lab Grown meat? Will it help the environment?

@speakout lots of reasons! Taste, familiarity, things like that. Most vegans don’t eat meat because they don’t want to contribute to the harm of animals. That doesn’t mean they hate the taste or texture of meat. Many of us actively enjoy good meat substitutes.

No

Twinkerbellsmum · 25/02/2020 19:26

No chance

lavenderlove · 25/02/2020 19:31

I'm vegan and no I wouldn't - just sounds unappetising to me, but I'm happy that it will hopefully reduce animal slaughter

Gin96 · 25/02/2020 19:35

It doesn’t sound popular so why has there been biological tests been going on for the last couple of years, the UK is the lead on this?

Bastetcat

I find it strange that's all.

I suppose it depends on your reasons for not eating meat.
I rarely eat meat- so not a vegan, but the reasons I don't are a lot to do with taste and texture.
There are so many other foods that are far more delicious than meat, I can't imagine trying to make my food taste like a piece of dead animal when it isn't.

Bastetcat · 25/02/2020 19:42

@speakout that’s totally fair - I can see why a meat replacement would be unpalatable if your reasons for not eating meat are that you don’t like the taste / texture.

I liked meat when I ate it. I don’t miss it now and I don’t really like meat substitutes (except for some brands of sausages and burgers). But for people who really love the taste of meat but don’t want to harm animals, I can see why subs are so popular.

TeddyIsaHe · 25/02/2020 20:01

It’s not processed, it’s just meat that’s grown from animal cells, just you don’t have to kill an animal to get it. They basically just grow a steak from stem cells. It’s very clever.

It’s not like a vegan ‘steak’ that IS processed and weird. It’ll just be beef, but without the abattoir.

I love the taste of a bit of dead animal, but I'm also quite happy eating vegetarian food. I've never seen the point of making vegi food taste like meat. If you are vegan, I would see the point as it must be limiting if you aren't creative. But if you want to eat meat, then eat meat.

If non live meat looked and tasted like steak, then yes. But I suspect it will just be mince, and I prefer beans and lentils to mince.

Greenfinger555 · 25/02/2020 21:29

No way- I can't even cope with the texture of quorn. The whole 'lab' thing sounds creepy imo. Might be the way forward though and at least nothing died

FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18 · 25/02/2020 21:32

I would! I'd love a steak 😋

IceColdCat · 25/02/2020 21:32

As other posters have said, I think you're asking the wrong question by addressing the title of your post to vegetarians. I'm a meat eater who is trying to cut down on meat for environmental reasons, so I'd definitely be interested in trying this.

Lilimoon · 25/02/2020 21:33

As long as it was environmentally ok, in a heartbeat. Veggie for 30 years but I would love a bacon butty (with no piggy death involved).

EliK · 25/02/2020 21:34

No. I hate all this replica meat, I like real veggie food.

Byllis · 25/02/2020 21:50

Depends of what it actually is. Like most on here, I prefer vegetarian/vegan food that is recognisably vegetable-based and not something processed to a ridiculous degree. I do eat fake meat from time to time, but very much in a junk food context. It's not "proper" food.

If lab-grown meat really was meat somehow and was nutritious like real meat, though... yes. I gave up meat because I was disgusted by a lot of farming practices, and although I'm used to it now, it was a big sacrifice (and I ended up reintroducing fish after a few years). Meat does not disgust me at all so would be happy to eat an animal-friendly version.
