Eat Lab Grown meat? Will it help the environment?

OP posts:
Medievalist · 25/02/2020 18:43

I'm a vegetarian because I hate the cruelty involved in farming animals for people to eat. I don't want to pretend I'm eating animal flesh.

UnravellingThreads · 25/02/2020 18:46

I guess I might try it since I've never eaten meat but I'm not overly keen on the idea. For one thing, I'm a fussy eater with a load of sensory issues (I'm autistic) so trying new things is always stressful at the best of times. For another, I just don't like the idea of meat and I'm not sure I could disassociate the lab-grown stuff from the idea of bits of carcass. On an intellectual level I know no animal would suffer for it but my gut reaction is that eating bits of flesh is gross.

I'm all for it as an idea, though. My DH, who decided to go veggie as an adult for ethical reasons but misses the taste, would absolutely eat it and is looking forward to this being a reality.

Doodlesquah1 · 25/02/2020 18:48

No it’s way way way way too processed

purpleleotard · 25/02/2020 18:50

Just No
the whole idea sounds star trek bonkers

oohnicevase · 25/02/2020 18:50

No it sounds like tears down the line it will have some horrible side effects .. what's the point .. I don't eat meat because I don't want to eat animals and mostly because I hate the way they are treated before they die so in theory I would eat it but it's pointless , there are so many options for plant based food now !

2018SoFarSoGreat · 25/02/2020 18:56

No from me too. I don't like the texture of taste of meat, or may substitutes.

handbagsatdawn33 · 25/02/2020 18:57

I'm wondering who this stuff is aimed at?

I can understand veggies & vegans not wanting it, but I'm an omnivore & wouldn't want to eat it either.

icannotremember · 25/02/2020 18:58

Probably not, I don't have any desire to eat meat at all. It makes me feel sick to think of it. No moral objection to lab grown meat in any way, I just don't want to eat flesh.

Honeyroar · 25/02/2020 18:59

No. I don’t want processed food. If animals were reared in less intensive farming methods and not travelled miles to abattoirs I’d never have given up meat at all. Five years on I don’t miss it at all.

BelfastNonBlonde · 25/02/2020 19:00

No

Weird and processed and unnecessary

Eckhart · 25/02/2020 19:02

How processed do we want our food, when we know how unhealthy it is? Meat free meat? Scary.

Frariedeamin · 25/02/2020 19:02

My husband is a lifelong vegetarian and would happily eat lab grown meat. Saying that he shovels in meat substitutes like there is no tomorrow but doesn’t want to eat animals - it’s a simple line for him. As a meat eater I do not want to eat lab grown meat! Envy

RuggerHug · 25/02/2020 19:04

Not generally as I'm happy with my veggie foods not having meat substitutions but for meat eaters who would have it, it would make things easier for doing one dish for everyone. So not usually, but wouldn't have any objections.

TheFaerieQueene · 25/02/2020 19:05

No. I’ve been vegan for decades and the thought of a meat texture and flavour is abhorrent to me.

BuffaloCauliflower · 25/02/2020 19:06

I’m veggie and would happily eat lab grown meat, in fact I’m looking forward to it! I stopped eating meat for the environment and that I didn’t like the animal suffering, plus it seemed unnecessary when I could just eat something else, but I’m not against the eating of animals in and of itself and I loved meat! If I could have it again without the environmental and cruelty negatives I would.

LonginesPrime · 25/02/2020 19:06

Does it have the same nutritional value as natural meat? What about the cholesterol?

I eat vegan burgers, etc (that taste quite meaty) because I get pain from eating red meat, so I don't think it would help me.

Pukkatea · 25/02/2020 19:07

People are so ignorant of science. Meat is molecules. Lab or animal, if it's the molecules in the same configuration it's the same bloody thing. Probably better for you, because it won't have as many waste products or hormones accumulating in the muscles. The insulin that is used by diabetics is farmed in a laboratory!

And people need to stop saying 'processed' it's becoming such a meaningless term. If you eat an apple that's been processed with various chemicals throughout its journey to you.

exexpat · 25/02/2020 19:08

Veggie for 35+ years and I would not eat it. I don't like all the recent 'so realistic you can't tell it's vegan' type meat substitutes and burgers, I would much rather have something that is not so far from its origins that you can't tell what it is made of.

Lab-grown meat I presume will be aimed at meat-eaters who feel a bit guilty about the ethics and/or environmental impact of real beef, but I have to say I have my doubts about how environmentally friendly it can actually be (surely high energy expenditure in the growing/processing?).

CremeEggThief · 25/02/2020 19:11

No. It wouldn't appeal to me (over 20 years vegetarian). But I suppose it adds to choice and there are several different reasons for vegetarianism or veganism.

Cautionsharpblade · 25/02/2020 19:13

No. I’ve not eaten meat in 40 years so I don’t miss it or even remember it. I’m guessing lab grown meat will be expensive whereas the food I eat is cheap. I wouldn’t be keen to try it, though I’d still find it preferable over a slaughtered animal.

speakout · 25/02/2020 19:13

I'm a meat eater and I wouln't eat it.
Same reason I wouldn't eat vegan cheese ar fake bacon.

The whole " plant based" section in supermarkets nowadays looks gross, random things shaped to look like " vegan chicken" or plant based " beef". Beyond grim. Highly processed. A lot of it base on soya( not very healthy or environmentally sound), pea protein, quorn, palm oil, guar gum, alginates, potato starch, white flour, bamboo fibre.

In short a heap of crap.

Why do vegans want food that looks like meat?

Lordfrontpaw · 25/02/2020 19:16

It just sounds yukky. What is it made from? I suppose we eat things lie Quorn but 'lab-grown meat' definitely needs a PR makeover.

VioletCharlotte · 25/02/2020 19:18

No I wouldn't, I've been vegetarian for a long time and the thought of meat actually turns my stomach. I don't like meat substitutes either.

It's an interesting idea though. I'd support anything that encourages people to eat less meat, meaning less animals suffer.

Bastetcat · 25/02/2020 19:24

I’m vegan and I wouldn’t. I don’t miss meat and I have plenty of other delicious things to eat. The idea also grosses me out.

I don’t know if it would be more environmentally sustainable but it’s hard to see how it could possibly be worse!

I would much rather other people ate lab grown meat than ate animals.

CommunistLegoBloc · 25/02/2020 19:24

I think it's more of a relevant question for current meat-eaters. Vegetarians don't eat meat for a variety of reasons, from texture / taste to environment to animal welfare. Personally I feel meat is so thoroughly not a part of my life that I have no need for substitutes, but a meat eater who loves it but is looking to cut back might be more keen.
