Sickofyoutube · 23/02/2020 21:43

Iv always been addicted to it. I drink probably 1.5ltrs a day, sometimes less sometimes more.

I don’t drink anything else other than water and I don’t feel rehydrated drinking water etc.

But Iv decided enough is enough. I’m so grumpy if I haven’t had any.

I worry about drinking squash, is it as bad?

Helpppp I’m an addict 😩😩

I stopped buying bottles as it was easy to pour a pint and then another.
We only have cans in the house now.
Never before 12 and I try to limit myself to 1 can a day.

I may give up for lent

SluggishSnail · 23/02/2020 22:24

I quit Diet Come 5 years ago

LOL at the thought of Diet Come :)

WellTidy · 23/02/2020 22:26

I’ve been like that but with Diet Coke. I was drinking three cans a day. I am now down to one, and I’m enjoying that one way more than the three I was having before.

I dropped steadily. Could you reduce slightly for a few days and then slightly more again for another few days and reduce like that?

TheWordmeister · 23/02/2020 22:27

I’m addicted too! I don’t drink coffee and I might have one decaf tea a week, but I’ll have 3 cans of Pepsi max most days.

I do give it up for a month now and then and find it pretty easy, but I just love it so always go back to it.

Heismyopendoor · 23/02/2020 22:31

I stopped cold turkey and it wasn’t too bad! But if you are really addicted I would think about buying cans and start with three cans a day, then after a week or so go down to two and then another week go down to one.

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 23/02/2020 22:32

It's aspartame/Ace K.

I know the feeling. You feel like you're dying of thirst if you're not drinking it and it's the only thing that will quench your thirst. Water won't cut it. However it's your brain lying to you. I was on around a dozen cans a day of diet coke or coke zero until 5 days ago when I quit cold turkey. I've gotten through the aspartame flu you get after coming off it - headaches, exhaustion, moodiness. I'm feeling alot better though and my skin is feeling better. It really is a terrible chemical. I'm not any type of health professional but it should be banned. It also tastes disgusting so I don't understand why I was still drinking it.

Scott72 · 23/02/2020 22:33

I wouldn't worry too much about it personally. Maybe try and cut back a bit. The drink could damage your teeth, but I spoke to a dentist about this myself and the danger isn't too bad. The food acid can weaken your teeth for maybe half an hour after drinking it. But if you rinse your mouth with water and avoid grinding your teeth after you should be right.

PonteLaCorona · 23/02/2020 22:35

I quit Diet Come 5 years ago

I quit ALL Come about 10 years ago. It's a genuine weight out of my life 😂

bumblenbean · 23/02/2020 22:43

I’m the same. Initially it was full sugar coke back when I was in my early 20s and slim - as I got older and started to put on weight I switched to Diet Coke but then discovered Diet Pepsi which imo is sooo much nicer. Still hopelessly addicted. I drink 2-3 cans a day but the first I have with breakfast which is a really awful habit.

It’s a combination of things for me - the bubbles, the taste and as others say for some reason it feels like the only thing that quenches thirst even though I know that’s not actually the case.

I’ve tried upping my water intake but it’s a struggle - I find it hard to drink unless I’m really thirsty.

No real advice I’m afraid - I just try to keep it to as few as possible.

undercoveraessedai · 23/02/2020 22:56

Following with interest as I'm exactly the same 😶

VetOnCall · 23/02/2020 23:07

I had to limit myself to one can of cherry Pepsi Max per day but I could easily have drunk 2 or 3. The only reason I'm using past tense is because you can't get it in Canada Sad I had to go cold turkey but I still get cravings for it. Food/drink wise it's definitely the one thing I miss the most from the UK. I mostly just drink water or lime cordial now - squash isn't really a thing in Canada either.

daisym00n · 24/02/2020 06:38

I gave it up about 6 weeks ago. No problems and if I'd realised how easy it would be, I'd have done it years ago. I went cold turkey by the way and just drank water for the first week.

Sickofyoutube · 25/02/2020 06:55

Those who quit, what do you drink when you go out for a meal or something?

I like how it makes me feel full, so when I diet it helps.

Also it’s hardly any calories, where as squash etc i feel is wasted Calories lol

I’m currently off the Diet Coke.

Again.

I really don’t want to relapse again. I’ve considered joining AA and pretending I m addicted to alcohol.

bugbhaer · 25/02/2020 07:05

@Sickofyoutube I only drink water really, I like it. On a night out I tend to go for lime and soda.

MelAndShoe · 25/02/2020 07:07

Get a nice water bottle. Just drink that and tea/coffee.

I was spending a crazy amount on it.

Totally understand. Imo cold turkey is best.

BearimyJeremy · 25/02/2020 07:15

Ohh I love pop. Lime and soda or lime and fizzy water cuts through thirst quite well and in time it will feel a bajillion times more thirst quenching. I cut out diet pop a while back and whilst I remember the "cutting through thirst" feeling of a cold diet pepsi I have to say it must be an aspartame addictive thing as after a while all I got from them if I did take a swig is a cloying bloaty artificial sweetness. I've not purchased now in about a year and wouldn't order one by choice now. Vanilla full fat coke however I'd make an exception for but that'd screw the diet well and truly Grin

Aria20 · 25/02/2020 07:33

Sorry not helpful but I LOVE the raspberry Pepsi max! I did quit before and was fine, I also only really drink water and 1 cup of tea a day apart from this and sometimes the water tastes weird so I feel like I need the Pepsi max to take the taste away lol!

Nowayorhighway · 25/02/2020 08:15

It’s also the fizz for me so I switched to sparkling water. I’ve been addicted to it on and off for years, I used to drink 2L a day but managed to quit and stay away from it for a few years. Problem with me is it slowly becomes a problem once I start allowing one can or bottle here and there. I realise this sounds like alcohol addiction but it definitely is an addiction, I think it’s the aspartame.

Winesalot · 25/02/2020 08:49

I also an addict. I have found other women in my life who are also addicted too.

I also came across quite a few in Costco when the pallet of Max had run dry. There was a pallet up on the top of a rack and women standing around staring and pointing. At last someone came and got slabs down for everyone and the relief was palpable..... chatting while we were waiting, all had an addiction just like me.

I find when I want to cut down, cold fruit tea and soda water helps me.

EscapeTheCastle · 25/02/2020 09:01

There's a reason they sell cans in mega multi packs.

Over the years on and off I've been addicted to Diet Pepsi then Diet Coke and then more recently full fat Coke. Always in a can. To be drunk only from the can as well.

I got down to one can of Coke a day. The only reason I have successfully given up now (again) is because I was in hospital for two week in January so obviously had to go cold turkey.

I am having to plan carefully ahead if eating out so I don't "accidentally" order a Coke. I don't like sweeteners either so many other soft drinks on the menu are not for me either.

I remember being off pepsi and coke for a long time but I kidded myself one Dr Pepper would be ok. Oh my goodness I felt so ill afterwards!

FeedMeChoc · 25/02/2020 09:03

I went cold turkey when I developed acid reflux and learnt that one can is the equivalent to the amount of acid your stomach produces in a day! My poor teeth!

After about 3 days I was totally over it and now I will probably have half a can once a month as I just don’t like it.

Start by cutting down. For example only allowing one glass just with meals. Then lose it for breakfast, then lunch, then dinner until you’re off it.

FeedMeChoc · 25/02/2020 09:05

When I go out I only drink water as well. Sometimes I’ll have a fruit juice. I’m a very cheap date lol.

You can get sugar free squash but it’s still full of crap. Honestly cold water from the fridge is my favourite drink these days.

bugbhaer · 25/02/2020 09:10

Yes,every time I’m clean I tell myself that I one can today, just because I’m having a bad/tough/great day won’t do any harm.
And it doesn’t.
So I have just one can the next day. And then I’m having a really bad day, I deserve three, and I’m hooked again.

HotGlueGun · 25/02/2020 09:28

I'm a DC addict also!! Have been for 25 years apart from a 6 month period when I quit. Am thinking of quitting again just now... perhaps we can also support each other in doing the same?
