Is leopard print unprofessional?

I ordered a new dress from Next and it came today. Tried it on and showed DH, said I might wear it for work tomorrow. He looked horrified and said he didn't think leopard print was 'professional'.

For background, DH works in a very corporate environment (shirt and tie) whereas I've just started a new job and the dress/culture is much more relaxed (jeans/chinos).

AIBU? Is leopard print really that bad? Planning on wearing it with black tights and ankle boots for context...

I’m basically kat slater so I’m gonna say wear it I love a bit of leopard print! Leopards in at the moment, I think as long as the style of the dress is respectful, meaning if it was any other colour you’d wear it no questions asked then it’s fine!

Cherrysoup · 23/02/2020 19:52

Well, it isn’t Bet Lynch, but it’s a bit casual. Probably about the right level for the OP who says she works in a casual environment.

Gwenhwyfar · 23/02/2020 19:52

No.
Or it depends on your job, if you're Bet Lynch it's OK, but she also had a long cigarette holder...

Gwenhwyfar · 23/02/2020 19:53

Cross posted with others who mentioned Bet Lynch and Kat Slater.

Winterlife · 23/02/2020 19:53

I think leopard print shoes or accessories are fine. A dress is too much. I agree with your husband.

EmeraldShamrock · 23/02/2020 19:56

It really depends on the job, As a newbie I'd avoid a leopard print dress unless it was a scarf or collar of blouse.

UnaCorda · 23/02/2020 19:56

I wore a leopard print dress (in an aubergine colour) to present at our board meeting last week. Nobody looked particularly startled.

I don't suppose anyone would, unless perhaps one of your board members is a gazelle.

DHW1 · 23/02/2020 19:57

I work in finance and I wear leopard print sometimes. I personally wouldn’t wear this style dress for work (ignoring the leopard print element) as it seems to casual, however, if you’ve wore this style before and it’s ok for your office go for it!

babysnowman · 23/02/2020 19:57

I wouldn't wear it to work, even on a dress down day.

On dress down I would maybe consider a leopard print accessory, like a skinny belt or scarf but that's about it.

RedPanda2 · 23/02/2020 19:58

Love leopard print, definitely not unprofessional

goldenorbspider · 23/02/2020 19:59

What about dalmation print op?

Isleepinahedgefund · 23/02/2020 20:00

Unless your office is exceptionally casual I'd say that's not work appropriate. Both the cut and the print are very casual. I don't think even sticking a jacket and heels with it would office it up!

AnyFucker · 23/02/2020 20:03

That's a drinks in the pub after work dress to me

Bubblemonkey · 23/02/2020 20:03

Leopard print in general screams kat slater imo 🙊

Cherrysoup · 23/02/2020 20:04

PMSL!

Fakefraud’s dress is a whole different level. Classy. The Next one is something my 24 year old mate would wear on a girls’ meal out.

PotholeParadise · 23/02/2020 20:04

Maybe it looks better on you OP, but on the model, I'd say the dress you linked is a no.

andyjusthangingaround · 23/02/2020 20:06

depends on your place of work... and country!
But in the UK, there is no office dress code where I can imagine this being acceptable.

I may assume that you are very young if this even crossed your mind! or it might be a terribly bad joke

Thymelord · 23/02/2020 20:06

Completely fine. I work in a corporate environment and wear animal prints at least once a week. It's not the 1950s, we dont have to wear black pencil skirts and white blouses to look "professional" Hmm

lilgreen · 23/02/2020 20:07

Of course it’s professional. How can a pattern be unprofessional?

PixieDustt · 23/02/2020 20:07

I hate leopard print imo it's very tacky.
I am aware a lot of people wear it I just dislike it myself.

PeterPanGoesWrong · 23/02/2020 20:08

Is this the dress? I think it’s lovely and fine for work in a professional environment. It’s what I’d call smart casual and if smart casual is ok for your office then why not.

I’m slightly giggling at the pearl clutchers saying animal print reminds them of prostitutes.

AnyFucker · 23/02/2020 20:09

That Whistles dress is in a completely different league though

PeterPanGoesWrong · 23/02/2020 20:09

Damn, photo didn’t attach.

TryingToBeBold · 23/02/2020 20:09

I work in a financial environment and that wouldn't be a problem. Smile

lilgreen · 23/02/2020 20:09

Op has posted a link. The dress is a loose swing style and absolutely ok for work.
