Is leopard print unprofessional?

LajesticVantrashell · 23/02/2020 18:59

I ordered a new dress from Next and it came today. Tried it on and showed DH, said I might wear it for work tomorrow. He looked horrified and said he didn't think leopard print was 'professional'.

For background, DH works in a very corporate environment (shirt and tie) whereas I've just started a new job and the dress/culture is much more relaxed (jeans/chinos).

AIBU? Is leopard print really that bad? Planning on wearing it with black tights and ankle boots for context...

I wear leopard print most of the time in semicasual/ formal outfits at work. Theres nothing wrong with it

NewName54321 · 24/02/2020 00:11

If you are asking the question, "Is it suitable?" then you know the answer is most likely to be either "No" or "Possibly not".

You're not going to be comfortable wearing it, in case someone pulls you up on it, or recognises it from this page, so don't.

JollyGiraffe12 · 24/02/2020 00:14

Honestly I think it looks awful...dated, trashy...I wouldn’t bother

lilgreen · 24/02/2020 06:57

Leopard print for sexual lust???HmmConfused

NoveltyFunsy · 24/02/2020 06:59

Really don't like the shape (not that it really has one) of the linked dress

The print is ok on it

FizzyIce · 24/02/2020 07:02

I love leopard print and I’d wear it to work but the dress is very casual .
if work are ok with that ,why not

lettersbyowl · 24/02/2020 07:04

I work in a SLT role in a large public sector office in the city. I would wear that dress 100%, but it does depend on how you dress it up. I'd wear it with trainers for my casual, no meetings days - still with a nice bag, make up done etc. I'd wear it with heels or ankle boots and black tights, with more
formal make up and hair for my meeting filled days. In my Board meetings people are a mix of suits and more casual outfits with smart trainers these days - I think things have relaxed unless you work in a law or finance firm!!!

Leopard print only reminds me of one thing......

“You aint my muvva!”

“Yes i Aaaaaaaaaaaammmmmmmmm!!!!!”

:D

Strugglingtodomybest · 24/02/2020 07:34

Another post-40 year old who has leopard print inextricably linked to cheap and trashy in their head here.

However, I realise that times have moved on so I think the print is fine, but I really don't like the style. However, you've said you've worn that style to work before, so go for it.

sunshineANDsweetpeas · 24/02/2020 07:44

This is similar to the one I wear to work, with tights and ankle boots. I also wear it to customer sites, so consider it professional enough

Bluntness100 · 24/02/2020 07:52

I don’t think it’s leopard print as such that’s the issue, nor is it the style of the dress alone, it’s both together I would agree is not appropriate, but you know your workplace, we don’t.

For me the dress is a bit cheap and tacky looking and I’d not wear it to work,

fishonabicycle · 24/02/2020 07:58

I love! Wear it - I work in an international asset management company in London and that would be fine (as long as I wasn't meeting clients!).

Generally speaking, leopard prints are a no.

lazylinguist · 24/02/2020 08:16

People are replying based on their own taste and their own work environment. I'm not a fan of animal print and I wouldn't wear it to work. Only you can judge what you like and what's ok at your work, OP.

Maverick101 · 24/02/2020 10:18

I'll just leave this here...

not unprofessional, just a bit ....laughable!

any office that I've worked in would get you quite a few sniggers in quiet corners, as it really does look a bit Corrie barmaid.

SVRT19674 · 24/02/2020 11:16

Weeeell, if my mum were here right now, she would be telling you that leopard print is "indeed very professional, but the wrong kind of profession...if you get my drift". I have worn a leopard jumper, it depends what the rest of the outfit is like and also what the dress code is where you work.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/02/2020 11:28

Would not even register where I work, but we have a very relaxed culture. So glad I don't work in the stuffy offices many here appear to inhabit.

CarrotVan · 24/02/2020 12:22

That Joules leopard print dress is lovely.

I am currently wearing leopard print shoes.

I think that the OP's dress is quite a hard look to pull off bit that's more the fabric and the style than the print. Those tiered ruffle skirts don't work on lots of people as they can make your proportions look weird and the loose cut is rather shapeless.

If you chopped off the ruffle and wore it as a top with a black pencil skirt then it would be work for many body shapes in most office environments

But unless your manager says it's inappropriate then wear it and love it

mummydoris2006 · 24/02/2020 13:15

I'm rocking a leopard print skirt today OP, I work in an office on my own but customers and staff do pop in and out throughout the day. I absolutely love leopard print and wear it all the time

Franticbutterfly · 24/02/2020 13:31

Animal print is a neutral. Wear the dress!

MaryShelley1818 · 24/02/2020 14:56

Obviously it depends on the item but in general Leopard Print is fine as long as it's on a suitable item of clothing. I'd wear it at work, for meetings, conferences or to go to court and it would be fine. It's a very old fashioned view to link it to 80's Barmaids, adult entertainment etc It's quite a modern look now. Anyone who'd "snigger" and laugh at someone who's wearing something that's not their style needs to get a life and grow up. I'm glad I've never had to work with anyone who'd do that.

Purpleartichoke · 24/02/2020 15:06

I have an leopard print shirt, but it’s dark grey with black spots, so not as bold as a traditional leopard print. I have no problem wearing it to the office.

loobyloo1234 · 24/02/2020 15:16

OP - your workplace sounds fairly casual. The dress you posted is casual. It's absolutely fine

Some of the comments on this thread has cracked me up Grin Who knew each time I wore animal print in work it made me looked like I must work in the adult entertainment industry Halo
