To expect the new dishwasher to fit dinner plates?

PrincessSloth · 23/02/2020 11:00

Arrrghhh.

Bought a new slimline dishwasher after the old one died. Went for a Swan SDWB75120.

I hate everything about it. The spinney thing on the second "level" doesn't spin and makes a horrendous noise because it is bashing off the normal sized dinner plates on the bottom "level"... It barely fits anything in despite apparently being the same size as the old one and the different settings are just nonsense. Also it doesn't quite fit properly and we may have to cut the plinth down even though, as I said, it was the exact same size as the old one.

I want to return it but is the above enough reason? Plus, the top of it got slightly scratched during fitting so I'm not sure if they will accept it back.

Any advice?

Are the shelves in the correct place? They may need lifting or adjusting

TorkTorkBam · 23/02/2020 11:03

The shelves on mine can be raised and lowered.

Mind you there seem to be other reasons to return it.

AdoptAdaptImprove · 23/02/2020 11:04

Check to see if your top rack has two height settings - I had the exact same issue with my Hotpoint, till we worked out that we could pull the top rack all the way forward, flip the stops open and raise it up onto the upper rails. Voila - dinner plates fit. Try it, anyway.

fishonabicycle · 23/02/2020 11:11

Oh I'm such a flipping idiot! We couldn't fit our plates either. Just examined it and I managed to raise the top tray. I never even thought of that!

Excited101 · 23/02/2020 11:17

Mine is the same op, the top rack seems abnormally low. I did have a look to see if you could lift it up but no luck. I’ll have a proper look later since it seems it is actually generally possible!

PrincessSloth · 23/02/2020 11:18

Ahh okay, I'll try and see if the top rack can be lifted, although this is doubtful as there is a third rack at the very top for cutlery, which I thought I would love but it's actually a total PITA.

@PrincessSloth

Can you return it? There is usually a cooling-off period with stuff like this. How long have you had it?

Nooch · 23/02/2020 11:24

I was going to say that you can usually adjust the top shelf. Hopefully you will be able to.

OwlBasket · 23/02/2020 11:24

My dishwasher has 3 racks too, the bottom one and the cutlery one are fixed. The ‘top’ (middle) rack can still be raised lowered.

PrincessSloth · 23/02/2020 11:24

We've had it for about 2 weeks, I will see if I can lift the second rack and if not I'll give them a phone.

I'd rather get rid of it anyway, the old dishwasher could comfortably fit in all the plates, plus pans, colander, utensils, coffee cups etc but this one just about fits a couple of plates, one pan and not much else.

Except it actually doesn't fit the plates at all which was the whole point but you see what I mean 😂

I have had a Neff and a Miele with 3 racks. Both had adjustable height shelves. Lots of tall glasses: lower the shelf, lots of tall plates: raise the shelf. Easy. I can even take the middle rack out to do super tall things like stock pots.

TorkTorkBam · 23/02/2020 11:30

How to video

anotherlittlechicken · 23/02/2020 11:45

@PrincessSloth I am sure you can return it then. Just say it doesn't suit you, it doesn't fit your kitchen properly, and half your stuff doesn't fit in it.

Whether you get a return/refund depends largely on where you got it from. Argos are brilliant for taking stuff back; PC World, Sainsburys and Tesco not so much.....

malmi · 23/02/2020 11:47

You've no right to return it if you've been using it. It's not actually faulty in any way. Who did you buy it from? Online or in store?

If it has an extra cutlery shelf at the top then obviously there will be less space for the other two racks.

Hopefully you can adjust the shelf so your plates fit.

You should always check the spinny thing can spin freely before setting it off. It's chopsticks that block ours unless you put them in the right bit of the cutlery stand.

dementedpixie · 23/02/2020 11:50

I have a cutlery shelf and can still adjust the top rack to fit plates on the bottom rack. Mine is a bosch

Toomanycats99 · 23/02/2020 11:51

I've just bought an integrated one and having same issue!

Toomanycats99 · 23/02/2020 11:56

Thank you! Just realised I can adjust my middle shelf - I thought I was going to have to wash my plates by hand....

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 23/02/2020 11:56

I found out on MN that I could raise the top shelf of my dishwasher (inherited when we moved in) , means I can use my nice plates not just the rubbish small ones! Also stopped DH moaning about the 'bloody pointless dishwasher' when we'd used the larger plates and he was washing them up by hand......

BadToast · 23/02/2020 12:00

If you want to send it back, just say it's bust. Say it keeps turning it self off randomly.

Don't say oh it's a load of shit, I want it gone lol Grin or that you have changed your mind. Say the above and when they ask you if you want it replaced with the same say no, because you have lost trust in that brand/model.

On a side note, our dishwasher is from 1989! It's gray and white so does not look out of place in 2020 but the big square buttons and clicky dial, give it's age away lol.

TheGreatWave · 23/02/2020 12:09

Ours does the same (inherited with house) I too will go and check, before I replace it.

malmi · 23/02/2020 12:27

Err yeah @BadToast, or just go back to the shop with a high vis vest on and help yourself to the one you want, they are actually very unlikely to stop you if you look like you know what you're doing. Leave the other one outside though so it's just swapping not stealing lol

AdaColeman · 23/02/2020 12:34

It will never function effectively if the spinner isn't clear to spin freely, so you need to send it back.

TheGreatWave · 23/02/2020 15:13

Thank you TorkTorkBam you have solved my issue. 20months I have lived with it and a simple two minute fix and it is perfect (I had to Google for a different video for mine). I may have done a little happy dance in the kitchen. I honestly thought I was going to have to buy a new one, so you've saved me £££.

Flowers and Wine for you.

TheGreatWave · 23/02/2020 15:17

Oh and Flowers and Wine for everyone else who suggested it.

Though I am aware that having raised the rack that wine glasses may no longer fit. straight from the bottle then

StrawberrySquash · 23/02/2020 16:31

Try turning the plates round so they face backwards. It shouldn't but, but I've had it fix the problem.
