What do you do with or what do your 5 and 6 year olds do at the weekends?

OP posts:
Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/02/2020 16:22

I have a 6yo.

Depending on weather - park, soft play, nature trails, occasionally bigger days out like the aquarium/trampoline park. Sometimes we go out for lunch.

Sundays we have a lazy day watching movies, screen time and snacks.

canithrottlesomeppl · 22/02/2020 16:24

Park, softplay, walks, farms, explore the local woods, cinema, bake, craft thing, trampoline park, bike rides or just play in the garden.

bridgetreilly · 22/02/2020 16:25

Sports on Saturday and Sunday mornings (mix of rugby, football and gymnastics). Then it's either out for a birthday party or similar, or playing at home/in the garden, or sometimes visiting grandparents. Occasionally we'll have another family over and the kids play while the grown ups hang out.

Booboostwo · 22/02/2020 16:31

Soft play is great in bad weather. Otherwise park, cycling, walking the dogs, etc.

In the afternoon we tend to laze about a bit more, board games, lego, baking, Nintendo, movies, computer games, etc.

Dylaninthemovies1 · 22/02/2020 16:38

4 year old so not quite the same but here goes.

He goes to lots of parties, nearly every weekend hes attending at least one.

Soft play,
Cinema
Football class (he goes to a regular group)
Local park visits
Activity park visits (muddy boots, active kids)
Trampoline park
Local museum visits
Play dates with his wee pals either at our house or theirs
Roller disco
Feeding the ducks
Playing on his scooter or bike
Crafts
And his favouriteStaying at home playing with his toys

Catapillarsruletheworld · 22/02/2020 16:41

Mine are older now, but when they were little we used to;
Go to the park,
Soft play,
Countryside walks,
Go to the beach,
Bake cakes,
Visit relatives,
Go to national trust houses,
Play farms,
Swimming,
Saturday morning kids cinema

The list is endless really. We still do quite a few of those things now, went to the beach yesterday and baked a cake today. They’re now teen and tween.

DooDahhDing · 22/02/2020 19:27

Mine are 3 & 5 but we do

Park
Long nature path walk with bike & scooter
Trampoline Park
Cinema
Somtimes soft play but i hate it when its busy
Day at the beach - train included so super exciting for them
Farm
Bowling
Visit family - always a day out as no one is local
We eat out once a week during a weekday

We always have one lazy day either saturday or sunday depending on our plans

Lolly86 · 22/02/2020 19:30

6 year old DD often has a party to go to but this weekend we have had ballet exam rehearsal, some shopping for paint, shoes and food with lunch out then played with toys at home, tomorrow have indoor crazy golf and lunch planned then over a friends house to play

Lifesabeach86 · 22/02/2020 19:31

We have 4 and 7 year olds, we pack a picnic and go to the forests or the hills for adventures every weekend. No matter the weather. It feels so good to get up and get out, get blown about and then come back and watch a film or play in the house. It's little effort, free and good for the soul when you're driving each other mad in the house!

trilbydoll · 22/02/2020 19:33

Trampoline park, swimming, climbing, ice skating, bowling - some of these are obviously easier with a 1:1 ratio!

At home, playing board games, playing with each other, watching films.

CatteStreet · 22/02/2020 19:41

It's a great age! Playground, church, museum, walks, unchallenging bike rides, swimming, reading, baking, gardening, watching a film, jigsaw puzzles, board games.

BestZebbie · 22/02/2020 19:42

Every weekend: Playground/bike/scooter, playing with toys/board games/imaginative play, 'jobs' (family chores like driving on an errand, homework/reading), some tv/tablet, long bath.
Often: playdate/parties, soft play, museum/national trust, swimming, country park, crafts/cooking, cafe/lunch out.
Around once every six weeks: visit grandparents (x2), visit other family/friends, longer day trip/one night stay in a hotel to do things further afield.

CaptainMerica · 22/02/2020 19:43

We have busy weekends where we do big trips out (zoos, science center, etc), and quieter weekends where it is just swimming and lazy afternoons playing games. Sometimes he has play dates with friends.

Mulledwineinajug · 22/02/2020 21:45

Mine has a ballet class.
We walk the dogs, read, go to the park, craft, go swimming. Invite a friend over or arrange to meet up. We bake or cook. We get some jobs done. In Summer we play in the garden.
We play board games and cards. We stay up later on a Saturday night and watch a film with popcorn.

Sometimes we do a day out- cinema, soft play, local attractions, national trust.

That sounds as though we do loads. We don’t really. They need to relax at the weekends and just play with their toys imo.

Mulledwineinajug · 22/02/2020 21:46

I have other children too though. Someone said these things are easier 1:1 but they can also be easier when the children play together.

Whatsername177 · 22/02/2020 21:54

We sometimes do a day out similar to those listed above. More often than not, we visit grandparents. They come supermarket shopping. They play or watch a film whilst I clean/iron/cook. I wish weekends could be all about the lovely days out, but I work full time, so sometimes they have to be dragged along to the boring bits.

likeafishneedsabike · 22/02/2020 21:59

Depends on budget really, doesn’t it? At this age it’s worth having a membership to a local children’s farm where they can feed the animals, play outside, play inside, ride the tractor etc etc.
The beauty of this age was that they would then spend the afternoon creating the farm they’d visited out of plastic animals and Lego and playmobil. They still sort of do this by creating a leaflet or map for places they’ve been. Maybe it’s all part of processing the experience, not sure but it keeps them busy.

troppibambini · 22/02/2020 22:02

I have a 5 year old and a 6 year old.

Sat morn
Football
Sat aft
Jujitsu
Sun morn
Rugby
Sun aft
Park, restaurant, soft play or just chilling at home with a roast

They are like dogs and need lots of exercise!!

Dongdingdong · 22/02/2020 22:18

This thread shows how different things are today compared to when I was a kid. We were just left to get on with it and make our own fun!

Dylaninthemovies1 · 23/02/2020 22:31

@Dongdingdong. That’s true. When I was young we went swimming on a sat morning and then church on Sunday morning and visit grandparents straight after. Rest of the weekend we just played among ourselves. I suppose many of us have more disposable income than our parents did when we were young (and there is a lot more activities aimed at kids now)

drspouse · 23/02/2020 22:36

5 year old has swimming first thing on Sat. Later we usually go shopping, library, maybe mum and DD coffee/hot chocolate, or park/bike, or maybe a film at home if the weather is crap.
Sunday church and Sunday school in the morning and it finishes quite early so they often want to go to the park on the way home. We are most likely to go out as a family in the afternoon (National Trust place, walk, beach etc) or just chill at home - homework, crafts, baking, board games.

Noodledoodledoo · 23/02/2020 22:36

3 and 5 year old. Saturday Trampolining or Ballet then Swimming lesson.

Party's one of the seems to have one each weekend currently.

Chilling at home with toys, maybe go out on scooters, bikes, tv, depending on rest of the weekend might pop to soft play to burn some energy.

drspouse · 23/02/2020 22:37

My DS is older and when he was 5 we did go to the farm or soft play a lot at the weekend but not so much now.

C33P0 · 24/02/2020 14:32

I always find these types of thread quite surprising - it sounds like everyone is out doing wholesome activities and able to devote the whole weekend to their DC.

I have a 5 year old and a 2 year old. On Saturdays they have swimming lessons in the afternoon and once a month I take them to the library in the morning to swap their books. On Sundays I usually take them out somewhere, but more often than not this is just the local playground/park. They might go there on their scooters/bikes.

Bigger days out, including local National Trust, we do maybe once every 6 weeks or just at half terms. Occasionally DS will have a birthday party or playdate on a Sunday, but again, maybe only once every 6 weeks.

Other than that the weekends are easily filled with the above activities plus chores and errands, e.g. gardening, haircuts, life admin etc.

Dylaninthemovies1 · 24/02/2020 18:38

@C33P0 we do some chores too, but do have a cleaner once a fortnight, and take turns where one of us stays home for a morning or afternoon and gets on with chores and the other takes DS somewhere. DH and I also do a lot of the chore type stuff in the evening and on our lunch breaks through the week. Oh, and we also both only work 4 days per week, so that’s a massive help too. We don’t do all of the things on my list every weekend. Just ideas for the OP of things to do
