AIBU white powder treatment in hotel room

Does anyone here work in hospitality in a hotel? There is a sign to say that there is some white powder on the bedframe and under the bed. It is a harmless dust treatment apparently. I'm not too happy about this ?

Why aren’t you happy? Are you asthmatic? The only white dust I can think of is diactemous (sp?) earth which is used to get rid of fleas.

Why is that an issue?

I'd be out of there toute suite ala Dell Boy and asking for my money back (I'm asthmatic).

Hmm I'd think they were doing a flea treatment which would make me leave pretty damn quick.

Why is it there?
Is there an infestation?
Why isn't the room kept vacant while the treatment is on going?

I’d much rather stay in a hotel that has an annual routine bed treatment. This is excellent to see! I done bed bug training a while ago and this is above and beyond. Pesticides are so highly tested in this country that I’d assume it is safe.

You get powders that cut down on dust mites in the carpet so it's probably that.

I'd think they had a problem with bed bugs and I'd feel very uncomfortable. If you stay dont put your bags on the floor/bed/soft furnishings, see if they have a little metal case stand.

Perhaps Kate Moss had the room before you.

They should not let the room while the treatment is happening. I would be down at reception saying I had asthma and cannot stay in the room.

I'd be suspicious that it was a powder treatment for fleas or bedbugs tbh.

They shouldn't be letting rooms if they're being treated!

In Bermuda they fling baygon around like talc for roaches. Vile stuff toxic to humans.

There’s nothing to say this has already taken place so unless you can see dust I’d say it is fine personally

Yes it is bed bug treatment and preventative.

Apparently all hotels, including 5*, have bed bugs, it's one of those ongoing things like cockroaches in basements and near kitchens.

What they do is try to ensure the bedbugs aren't where you are sleeping.

I've stayed in loads of hotels and never seen a bed bug, a hotel that employs good housekeeping staff will ensure that is the same experience for everyone.

Don't worry about it.

Diatomaceous earth will kill bed bugs in all stages, without the use of extremely nasty chemicals, many of which do not kill them in all of their life stages. It only takes one egg to be missed and an infestation could re-start, so is presumably a precautionary measure. Having bought a house that turned out to have them, and lived through that hell, I can totally understand why they would do it.

On the other hand, I think I'd also find it rather off-putting in a hotel room. It is harmless, but will dry out skin if you walk on or touch it. Personally, I'd rather that than the toxic sprays etc.
