Low grade dyskaryosis & HPV positive

Hello,

I am new here and really panicking when I received my results. I cannot focus and cannot sleep. To anyone who was in the same position as me, did the letter your letter just say HPV positive or did it say what strain of HPV it is?

I am for colposcopy but will the appointment come in a separate letter? I am worried I might have dropped portions of the letter when I knew I was positive. I am not active.

Can someone please enlighten me?

I had this a couple of years ago. The letter doesn’t ever say much. I had a colonoscopy and they biopsied. Back 6 months later for a follow up and the cell changes had reverted to normal. Still positive for HPV. The nurses weren’t concerned at all. Said it’s so common.

User06 · 22/02/2020 07:17

Sorry my phone always corrects colposcopy to colonoscopy!

SpiderBrooch · 22/02/2020 07:20

Hello, I got the same letter this week - the letter just says HPV positive. There was a leaflet with the letter which explained more about the colposcopy and the potential outcomes, which I found helpful. I also found it hard to sleep the first night and did some googling (probably not a good idea) but actually it put my mind at rest.

The day after receiving the results letter I got a second letter with the appointment for the colposcopy and it’s a week on Monday which is a relief.

You0401 · 22/02/2020 07:20

Had positive smears 6 times (maybe more?) Also have rested HPV positive in the past. Each time been followed up with a colposcopy and required no further action.
It's really common, do not worry.

Mabelface · 22/02/2020 07:29

I'm hpv positive. Had a colposcopy last year and am on annual smears. Not fussed really. It'll be OK.

Confusedlady08 · 22/02/2020 07:33

@User06 so it simply said HPV positive nothing else right?

Cause I opened it and returned it to my mailbox hurriedly I don’t know if I dropped something.

@SpiderBrooch Hi! I just have my result but no appointment yet. I hope yours will go smoothly and turn out okay.

Confusedlady08 · 22/02/2020 07:37

@You0401 i know but I cannot control my anxiety and fearful of the stigma.

Confusedlady08 · 22/02/2020 07:38

@Mabelface oh thank you. Trying to calm myself but I just couldn’t contain it

I've been hpv positive for a few years. I had coloscopy this year, all good and back for yearly smears. I'm not sure what you mean by stigma? Apparently 80% of people are hpv positive. It's nothing to be ashamed about!

treehousethunderstorm · 22/02/2020 08:00

I had moderate grade dyskaryosis and HPV four years ago. Went for the Colposcopy and they removed the abnormal cells. Went back 6 months later and all was clear, and been clear on subsequent smears.

I know of several other people in my friendship group who have been through the same thing, sometimes more than once, all been fine.

Confusedlady08 · 22/02/2020 08:15

@THNG5 It’s a cultural thing and people back home has different mentality than in here. Sad

OP posts:
Confusedlady08 · 22/02/2020 08:16

@treehousethunderstorm so the HPV cleared itself and results came back negative?

I am happy for you.

OP posts:
User06 · 22/02/2020 08:58

Yes just HPV positive at the moment. Your immune system usually clears it by itself.

treehousethunderstorm · 22/02/2020 09:17

It did at the time, but I'm well aware that it may reappear at some point.

I'd much, much, rather know about and go through Colposcopy again than be unaware.

OP, I was you, 26 years ago. My first boyfriend (I was 21 and waited!) passed it onto me. I was devastated. This was in the days before tissue typing and knowing whether or not my particular strain was linked to cervical cancer. All I knew was that I was 21 years old, recently sexually active and now had HPV. I was so upset.
I can't recall my initial treatment (I was living in New York). But I remember having another flare-up about 4 years later and having laser treatment done internally. I was 25 then. I had a smear every 6 months (I paid for this out of pocket) until I was about 27, then annually until my late 30s. For the past 10 years, I've had them every 3 years on the NHS. All normal. I've had normal smear tests since the age of 25 actually. It can eventually leave your body. Most strains actually do go away completely over time. I went onto have 3 kids and never had any problems.
The best advice I was given by a gynae was to keep my immune system up. He said it would leave my body but I would have to keep myself healthy. It doesn't mean live like a monk, but eat well, take zinc and vitamin C, learn about how to keep your immune system strong and how to take care of yourself when you're under par.
And if it's of any comfort, HPV is so incredibly common. There really is no stigma. Just make sure you know what strain you have. Best of luck.

tinylittlehat · 22/02/2020 09:32

I had the exact same diagnosis this time last year, I remember finding the Jo's Trust website good for information.

Had the colposcopy, cells removed and all was fine when I was checked again 6 months later. Both of my closest friends have had the exact same experience.

Confusedlady08 · 22/02/2020 09:41

@User06 hopefully it does

OP posts:
Confusedlady08 · 22/02/2020 09:42

@treehousethunderstorm so the smear result came normal and hpv negative after it cleared your system?

OP posts:
Confusedlady08 · 22/02/2020 09:46

@TheVanguardSix thank you for sharing your gynae’s advice. I will try to stay healthy. When you say all normal, HPV is not detected anymore more in the smears?

OP posts:
Confusedlady08 · 22/02/2020 09:57

@tinylittlehat will try to look into that website. Thanks

I tested positive a few years ago. Went onto annual smears, but the last couple have been clear. I was a little freaked out at first until I realised how common it was.

Confusedlady08 · 22/02/2020 11:20

@WhatWouldTheDoctorDo I hope mine will clear itself up to

OP posts:
QueenArseClangers · 22/02/2020 11:35

OP, you say you’re worried about stigma in your culture: how on earth would anyone know your diagnosis?

HPV is very, very common.

Confusedlady08 · 25/02/2020 12:42

Did you get the HPV vaccine?
