Hairwizard · 21/02/2020 20:42

As title says. Quoted 'from' 70 quid for a Christening cake. This was based on a 6" square cake with 4 sponge layers. Not tiers. Buttercream icing. Any decs toppers etc would be extra and from 8 - 15 quid!
Am i missing something?? How the f does a cake cost that much?

Most cake makers under charge. You clearly have no understanding of how much time, effort and expenses go into it. Stick to the supermarket cakes.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 18/01/2021 18:38

@thecatsthecats

I'd rather have a cat-shaped cake the size of a dragon for my £70!

SpilltheTea · 18/01/2021 18:38

Ah zombie thread 🤦‍♂️

BeeDavis · 18/01/2021 18:40

Total rip-off, my mum is a well respected Caker and it pisses her off no end the prices people charge!

Catchingfire123 · 18/01/2021 18:44

250g butter costs £2-3 alone. It would probably take 750g for that cake and eggs are £2-3 for 12 if you get free range so I would think the ingredients alone would end up being £15-20. With cake boards, boxes, equipment on top and then earning minimum wage I can see why it would cost so much

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 18/01/2021 18:46

@SpilltheTea

Thanks, didn't spot that.

They could get a cake for the first birthday I suppose?

Pbbananabagel · 18/01/2021 18:55

Costco birthday cakes (the big rectangular iced kind) are AMAZING.
They genuinely taste amazing and it looks like a lot of icing but it’s super light and fluffy so not too sickly at all.
Add in the fact they’re massive and you can personalise too all for £14.99 and they’re an absolute bargain.
We had one for my son’s first birthday last year and kick started a family obsession, now it’s a must have for any and all birthdays.

RB68 · 18/01/2021 18:55

I buy all my Cakes from Mark's & Spencer's, Cafe Concerto and Paul's Bakery for the same reason. 7 days notice required , click and collect.

Seriously, why do you have to be so vulgar, !
thosetalesofunexpected · 18/01/2021 19:07

Its a Christening Cake they are obviously will charge over the odds for a Luxery Cake of a kind as its similar status as such to a wedding cake!

I agree that it is does seem pretty steep expensive !

I don't know what the usually charge for Christening Cakes though !

Is its it Artisian upmarket Bakers place like in a London or such like somewhere else?😕

VinylDetective · 18/01/2021 19:09

@Waveysnail

I know good ingredients alone for large cake can cost around £30/40, add the time and prep then it's really not that much
The ingredients for four six inch square sponges would be a tenner at the outside. It would take an hour to make them and another hour to decorate. £30 an hour seems a lot to me.
mortensmike · 18/01/2021 19:11

I paid £60 for a birthday cake not long ago, it probably took 3-4 hours to do so I'm not surprised.

TrickyBiscuits · 18/01/2021 19:14

I’m waiting for someone to have a pisser about illegal christening parties 😂

Lippyheaven · 18/01/2021 19:25

Shop around or Costco does a lovely cake so I’m told

Lippyheaven · 18/01/2021 19:28

Fecks sake the date lol

Opheliaa · 18/01/2021 19:30

Time and cost of ingredients. It really isn't that much when you break it down. People are weird about cakes. Get a production line one from Tesco's if you don't want to pay a fair price for someone to make it for you

Washingmyself · 18/01/2021 19:33

Hahaha this reminds me one mum from my ( then ) daughters nursery.
I wanted to buy a cake for her 3rd birthday but everything seemed a bit pricey for me as I had no much money.
So I overheard this mum at the nursery gates talking about cakes with her friend.
I politely asked how much for a small birthday cake would be and she said £60- I almost fainted as £10 cake in Sainsbury’s seemed to pricey for me few days before...
She was not professional cake maker at all, just someone who hope to make a money while being Sahm I suppose.

notanothertakeaway · 18/01/2021 19:35

@isabellerossignol

My friend used to have a business making cakes. She gave it up because she was fed up of the abuse she got. Her cakes were beautiful, real works of art. She had an entire room full of equipment so that she could accommodate every design whim. She had to have food hygiene qualifications. Her cakes cost £80 because they took many hours work to make. Even a plain iced cake takes ages to get it smooth. And then there are ingredients, which are also expensive.

She made less than minimum wage and spent hours every week fending off verbal abuse on Facebook from people who insisted her cakes were a rip off. Well, no one was forcing them to buy them.

The reason a cake costs £80 when the ingredients are only a fraction of that is the same reason that a hand knit sweater costs a lot more than a ball of wool. Because you're paying for a skill.

@isabellerossignol

This happened to a friend of mine too. Her cakes were amazing, but many people want Gucci quality for Primark prices

LApprentiSorcier · 18/01/2021 19:36

Don't buy it then. Problem solved.

Lovemusic33 · 18/01/2021 19:37

I’m a cake maker, I get annoyed with people moaning about prices, it doesn’t happen often but when it does I tell them to go to Tesco to buy one. A christening cake would probably take me 4-5 hours to make (bake, cool down, decorate, box up) so that’s £10 per hour wedges, plus ingredients, cake board, box and any other bits needed. So £70 sounds pretty fair? If you don’t like it then make it yourself or buy a supermarket cake.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 18/01/2021 19:43

Well said @Lovemusic33

You pay for quality OP. Feel free to shop elsewhere.

Christmasfairy2020 · 18/01/2021 19:45

Yup that's the cost. Or buy buns as its much cheaper 6 pound for 6

Icantrememebrtheartist · 18/01/2021 19:51

You get what you pay for! I would expect to pay that. I would be wary of a cake maker offering to make the cake for much less.
