To think this is disgusting behaviour in the work place?

So a colleague has been sacked because of a serious crime he committed (the trial is on going at crown court) and he’s even pleaded guilty to one of the charges.

There has been zero announcement from management regarding this and today they forwarded us an email he’d sent saying goodbye to all of us and then he’s decided to leave for a fresh start (no he’s been sacked)

Aibu to think this is disgusting and he should not be allowed to control the narrative and pretend he’s no wrong and management should not facilitate him in doing so?

Unless the crime was to do with work and directly impacts you, I don't think your employer has any obligation to tell you anything.
They should definitely not be relaying the details of his disciplinary/ dismissal with you.

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 20/02/2020 20:11

It isn't great but it's such an unusual situation there probably isn't a policy for this so I think it's more about that particular manager not knowing what to do and thinking it wouldnt do any harm and there was no official policy not to, rather than the company being awful

mbosnz · 20/02/2020 20:11

The company has behaved very responsibly in the circumstances.

PristineCondition · 20/02/2020 20:13

Probably don't want you salivating in the break room anymore than you are. It quietly drawing a line over his time there

fluffiphlox · 20/02/2020 20:14

I think it’s ok in the circumstances.

Neverender · 20/02/2020 20:14

Innocent until proven guilty, no? They can't decide the outcome of the trial and announce it before its even happened...what else do you expect them to say?

shinyredbus · 20/02/2020 20:15

So you want the company to email everyone the details of his crime? Yabu. Don’t be Silly. A person in my husbands workplace did a crime, went to count and he got deported - his company didn’t tell anyone either

georgialondon · 20/02/2020 20:15

Unless he committed the crime at work then it sounds fine

Jeschara · 20/02/2020 20:15

You are over invested in this, it's not your business. Do you really want gossip and title tattle, because that's how it looks.

RogueV · 20/02/2020 20:16

What is the crime?

TheReef · 20/02/2020 20:16

I couldn't get that worked up about it tbh. Sounds like the company have been very diplomatic

PointlessAddict · 20/02/2020 20:16

If management haven’t made an announcement, how do you know he’s been dismissed rather than resigning?

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 20/02/2020 20:16

How do you know he’s been sacked? Plenty of people resign before they can be sacked.

JennysTailor · 20/02/2020 20:16

I'm guessing the crime was rape or sexual assault to evoke such a visceral reaction from you? In which case YANBU because I'm afraid I would feel exactly the same.

Yarboosucks · 20/02/2020 20:17

A fresh start as Her Majesty's Pleasure is a fresh start of sorts!

No innocent until proven guilty, then... what crime did he plead guilty to?

JosefKeller · 20/02/2020 20:20

Management is not the gossip column, they seem to have behaved perfectly.

Where do you think it's remotely acceptable to make an announcement when someone has been sacked? They seem to have kept it neutral, as they should. Your colleague hasn't even been found guilty yet, so how do you know they committed a crime? You are the victim?

itsjumanji · 20/02/2020 20:21

FIRSTLY.

My aibu is not I think the management should tell us.

My aibu was regarding the goodbye email they forwarded to us. I do not believe they should have done this.

What did you expect your employer to do? Is it normal policy to announce employers who have been sacked?

In all my places of work, if a member of staff has left under a cloud, their departure, let alone the reason, was never announced. We only found out about a former senior member of staff, who left suddenly, when an article about their conduct in their previous place of work turned up in national and local news.

Jeschara · 20/02/2020 20:22

jennystailor why are you guessing rape or sexual assault. It's best not to guess until you know the facts.

Jess827 · 20/02/2020 20:22

It's inappropriate to have sent around misleading information, utterly baffled that they'd do that.

In similar situations at work we simply get a short email going around saying (for example) "Joe Smith, Head of Account Management, is no longer with the company. His replacement will be announced in due course but please refer to Jane Bloggs in the interim for all matters."

They shouldn't have allowed him to communicate his reasons for departure, and not commented on it themselves.

JudyCoolibar · 20/02/2020 20:24

Innocent until proven guilty, no?

Not when he's pleaded guilty, no.

KatherineJaneway · 20/02/2020 20:24

He has not been convicted of said crime, only charged and in the process of a trial.

TheNewSchmoo · 20/02/2020 20:24

Disgusting? Without further details that seems a bit over dramatic
