To be proud of my parking

So I have a new car that is much much bigger than my old car. I had it an hour before I reversed into a lamppost. Today I managed to reverse it into my drive! It had gates and it's fairly narrow and I'm so so proud of myself. I'm not proud of myself for much these days but I was so happy I took a picture and sent it to my family!

I’m a great parker and confident driver but I find the first couple of hours in a new car a bit unsettling, so can see why it might have gone wrong at the beginning, OP.

These threads always seem attract the instantly condemnatory posters who I picture as having a well thumbed copy of the Highway Code Constantly at their side, see themselves as equivalent to advanced police drivers yet actually only occasionally venture into a dual carriageway on their way to the supermarket, tutting all the way at everyone else’s driving. Whilst wearing driving gloves.

HeartyGreenSalad · 20/02/2020 15:54

I have reversing in and out of my drive for 15 years and yet as soon as there are workmen round they direct me out
It comes from a kind place but..........

EagleVisionSquirrelWork · 20/02/2020 15:55

It was reported at the time and no harm was done (other than to my bank balance).

Who on earth did you report reversing into a lamppost to?? Confused

Grandmi · 20/02/2020 15:55

Well done you 😊

ItsJustASimpleLine · 20/02/2020 15:56

Well done!

amazedmummy · 20/02/2020 15:56

@Mummyoflittledragon the irony is I exclusively reverse park when I'm out. I don't like reversing back out of a space. Never have. The driveway gave me pause because of the gates, I was worried that while lining up I would scrape off one of the gates.

This post demonstrates why things like the "be kind" message (which I'm not at all convinced by to be fair) are a complete and utter waste of time. If you can't "be kind" about a simple, lighthearted and happy post like this one there's no hope is there?

amazedmummy · 20/02/2020 15:57

@EagleVisionSquirrelWork my car insurance. And had there been damage to the lamppost then the council.

I can absolutely imagine myself switching from my current hatchback to a saloon and bumping the boot into something when reversing.

In fact I nearly did that in my current car, ended up about 2 inches from the car behind Shock. After that I got a reversing lens and I've found that helps a lot (and it's way cheaper than a camera).

Itsonlywords · 20/02/2020 15:57

It does take time to get used to a new car, especially a bigger one- I feel your parking achievement!

MachineBee · 20/02/2020 15:57

I’m fine at parking but I completely understand the sense of pride you experienced. Anything we accomplish that’s new to us or takes us out of our comfort zine us to be applauded. Well done OP. Halo

RogueV · 20/02/2020 15:59

Well done OP ⭐️

Abraid2 · 20/02/2020 16:00

I mentioned the word parking several times and I do know the rules

You're getting AIBU Stockholm Syndrome and starting to follow rules made by Scary People.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 20/02/2020 16:02

Well done OP! I remember the first time I parallel parked properly. I was chuffed!

harrietthepie · 20/02/2020 16:03

Older and cheaper is more likely to be polluting.

ultrablue · 20/02/2020 16:04

I can reverse park really well into a space etc...

But l can not, for love or money drive into a space. I always think I'm going to take my front off.

This is me too, I'm too short to see over my bonnet haha

Besides it's more environmentally friendly too reverse into a space rather than reverse out of it Wink

Bluetrews25 · 20/02/2020 16:06

Well done OP.
I can't parallel park, and only got good at reversing into a space when I got a car with sensors and finally twigged how to use mirrors properly when reversing rather than turning myself around.
I passed my test before all this was examined. Blush

TossACoinToYourWitcher · 20/02/2020 16:06

Well done OP. Ignore the bitter twats trying to bring you down. They're just trying to find a way of making themselves feel better about their own miserable lives.

Hardtoknowwhat · 20/02/2020 16:08

Well done, OP!

I consider myself a pretty good driver, and parker for that matter. However, I always think it takes a while to get used to the dimensions of any new car and I wouldn't necessarily be confident reversing up a narrow drive on day one. Ignore the negative comments.

amazedmummy · 20/02/2020 16:08

@harrietthepie you may well be right but what would you like me to do about it? I tired to get by with my old car, I found the smallest pram I could and put it in the boot. That meant that I couldn't fit anything else in there. I live rurally with poor transport links. So yes I got an older, cheaper, bigger car. However I don't holiday abroad (if at all). If I can walk to where I need to go then I do. I rarely buy "new" anything although to be fair that is also a cost issue rather than just an environmental one. I would LOVE to be able to afford an electric car but they cost more than I earn in a year. I do what I can, how's the view from your high horse?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/02/2020 16:08

Well done OP,it's hard going from a car you know inside out to a new one.

unconfident drivers are a danger no they're not,bad drivers are a danger, unconfident doesn't always equal bad. Over confident drivers are a danger and that's why premiums for teens are so high.

sallysparrow157 · 20/02/2020 16:10

I went from a little polo which can be reversed off my drive (so could always just drive straight on) to a new estate with a button for a handbrake which is ridiculously long so has to be reversed onto the drive. I kept driving the old car and making the bloke take the new one for about 2 weeks as I was too scared to reverse onto the drive! The first time I managed it I told my parents and everyone at work how amazing I was at parking so I’m completely feeling your proud moment OP!!

kerryleigh · 20/02/2020 16:11

Well done OP! You'll get better, don't worry
I'm a good and confident driver but it takes me a bit of time to get used with a new car or someone else's car

butterpuffed · 20/02/2020 16:12

amazedmummy , don't waste your time explaining to deliberately mean posters.

Well done !

Wingedharpy · 20/02/2020 16:14

Well I'm impressed @amazedmummy, though I do speak as someone who managed to wrap the front end of my car round a concrete pillar while reversing out of a space in a multi storey car park.
Said car park was COMPLETELY EMPTY at the time 😊
