To think I will be dismissed for sickness record?

nojob · 18/02/2020 19:02

I started a new job last October with 3 month probation. I was told in January that my probation was to be extended for 2 months 'due to absence' as I'm not fully trained up yet and haven't been able to demonstrate I can meet the required standard. They said they are confident that I should meet the required standard by the end of February.

I have been off sick for 10 days in total (2 days in November, 2 days in December, 1 day in January all due to very bad periods and 5 days last week due to a heavy cold.). Can they decide not to pass my probation even if my performance is ok? They haven't said anything yet but I get the vibe that they are not very supportive of sickness. I missed some important training when I was off last week. Should I be worried?

Yes, a couple of days off each month is bad.

Nicknacky · 18/02/2020 20:00

Is this your first job? How can you not think this absence is a lot?

What are you doing about your period ps?

Milanda · 18/02/2020 20:00

Lol

Milanda · 18/02/2020 20:01

How old are you? 12?

JosefKeller · 18/02/2020 20:01

I didn't realise a couple of days each month was too bad. Hmm

and this is exactly why they cannot seriously keep you...
that's 24 days off A YEAR, might as well round it up to a month. It will only get worst when you are perm, that's bonkers.

Dontdisturbmenow · 18/02/2020 20:01

Surely the monthly period pain didn't start the same you started your job? So either you have failed to the initiative to get appropriate treatment, or you have a low pain threshold, or you think it appropriate to take time off for limited pain, or finally your condition is severe, in which case, did you declare it before starting work?

The fact you also took 1 week off for a cold will direct your manager to think that it does much for you to take time off sick and that is likely to worry them how much you would take for something more serious.

OscarWildesCat · 18/02/2020 20:01

Way too much sick leave and for minor things which can be controlled or dealt with. YABVU.

nojob · 18/02/2020 20:01

Have you been to a doctor about your periods?

Trust me, been to the doctor so many times over the years I've lost count. It's all in my medical records if they want a copy. My periods are so heavy and my iron levels get so low that I faint regularly. I am on iron tablets to help with that.

marblesgoing · 18/02/2020 20:02

I'd be concerned if you worked for me and had that much time off sick in that space of time to be honest op.

A small private firm has still paid you for being off and your not yet upto par and have already been off a lot.

It doesn't look good. I have period issues op however I take a combination of pain relief to counteract it.

Same with a heavy cold/chest thing.

Five days for a cold is also a long time.
It doesn't look reliable to an employer and it puts extra pressure in the other team members which won't take long to be an issue for them.

Emma198 · 18/02/2020 20:02

To be totally honest, i wouldn't pass you on your probation and I'd let you go. Harsh but they've employed you because they need someone to do a job and you've been off sick 10% of the time. Not sustainable for a business.

AbsentmindedWoman · 18/02/2020 20:02

Lol at the idea that paracetamol would be enough for the type of period pain that can have me:

  • puking
  • passing out
  • slumped on the loo for about an hour with diarrhoea until I give birth to a large clot

Also lol that the NHS do much about it.

I have adenomyosis confirmed by NHS, and I suspect endometriosis now too but the gatekeeping by the GP meant that they saw no point in referring me back to gynaecology. Fobbed off and told it's normal for some women (no it fucking isn't) and what did I expect anyone to do?

Didntwanttochangemyname · 18/02/2020 20:02

OP, why aren't you answering the posters asking what you are doing about the causes for your many sick days?

fussygalore118 · 18/02/2020 20:02

You didn't realise a couple of days of a month sick was bad?
Can I ask how old you are? You sound incredibly naive.

I think you have been lucky they extended your probation.i would expect to be let go.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 18/02/2020 20:02

I didn't realise a couple of days each month was too bad

You really do need to rethink this, OP, and anyway it's not just 2 days a month is it? It was that, but now it's getting worse - and this after they've already given you another chance

And I'm afraid "staying late" occasionally doesn't really matter if they feel they can't rely on you to be there in the first place

As several PPs have asked, do you have much previous empliyment experience?

TonyChestnut · 18/02/2020 20:03

Given that the best predictor of future behaviour is normally past behaviour, I would be very worried if I was your boss.
10 days in four months - pro-rata that's thirty days a year!
This what a probation period is for. They definitely can dismiss you. I'm sorry to say that's what I would do.

CakeandCustard28 · 18/02/2020 20:03

I didn't realise a couple of days each month was too bad.
What? Hmm They already arranged extra training time for you over sick days yet you thought you’d be fine taking an entire week off for a cold? Sorry OP but your living in lala land.

Lockheart · 18/02/2020 20:03

Ignoring all the "I still go into the office even if my leg is hanging off and I'm coughing up blood" crowd, your sickness record is very high.

Some people get ill more than others, true, and some women also get very bad periods but you can't take two sick days every month and expect to keep a job. That level of sickness absence is not normal, and honestly nor is taking 5 days off for a bad cold.

Assuming you don't have any underlying conditions which mean illnesses hit you harder than most, you really need to show your work that you're addressing the issue if you want to have any hope of keeping your job. Make a doctors appointment to discuss these problems ASAP and let your manager know that you're doing it. You don't need to tell them personal details, but tell them that you know you've been absent a lot and you're seeing someone to try and solve the problem.

TripTrappingOverMyBridge · 18/02/2020 20:03

OP, if you were self employed, you wouldn't be having time off work for period pain and a cold.

I am now nearing the end of periods, thank God - but when I had them, I had unspeakable pain, vomiting, etc. But if you work for yourself, you don't have any option but to carry on, come what may. I've been working for the past month with a broken foot (and it's a job that means I'm on my feet the whole sodding time). Because if I don't work, I don't get paid.

angelikacpickles · 18/02/2020 20:03

Five days for a cold is ridiculous. We had someone in our office who took the piss like this during her probation. We didn't keep her on.

OldHarrysGameboy · 18/02/2020 20:03

Is this your first full time permanent job, OP? Only you seem unfamiliar with expectations on employees.

DoreenSamuel · 18/02/2020 20:04

No wonder women get such a bad name in the work place

nojob · 18/02/2020 20:04

There are clear triggers though and you would be made aware of where you stand after each period of absence.

They haven't told me where I stand yet...is that bad practice? The only thing they have said is that they think I'll pass after the extension.

OP posts:
cowboy · 18/02/2020 20:04

You didn't realise a couple of days each month was too bad? Seriously??!! And five days for a cold? Just wow!

JosefKeller · 18/02/2020 20:05

On another note, you should try acupuncture.

Some posters might "lol" at the idea that others are getting treatments, but there are ways to help.

Bubblemonkey · 18/02/2020 20:05

I’m not going in for the rest of the week if a couple of day’s off a month ain’t too bad 😇
