To think I will be dismissed for sickness record?

nojob · 18/02/2020 19:02

I started a new job last October with 3 month probation. I was told in January that my probation was to be extended for 2 months 'due to absence' as I'm not fully trained up yet and haven't been able to demonstrate I can meet the required standard. They said they are confident that I should meet the required standard by the end of February.

I have been off sick for 10 days in total (2 days in November, 2 days in December, 1 day in January all due to very bad periods and 5 days last week due to a heavy cold.). Can they decide not to pass my probation even if my performance is ok? They haven't said anything yet but I get the vibe that they are not very supportive of sickness. I missed some important training when I was off last week. Should I be worried?

Doss that worry or upset you op? How will you pay the bills?

Birdnerd · 19/02/2020 20:22

Fucking hell op, you come across as very lazy

nojob · 19/02/2020 20:23

Op do you think your level of sickness if acceptable?

I'm going to try to improve it going forward

Eh??? Are you taking the piss? Of course it’s on. People get sacked if they cannot do the job they are paid for.

Er no, it said they can be let go "for any reason/no reason apart from discrimination" if it's not been two years yet.

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2020 20:23

Good for you, glad to hear it. Do you plan to see the gp?

Dickvandog · 19/02/2020 20:24

I asked you how about 14 pages ago!!

nojob · 19/02/2020 20:24

Doss that worry or upset you op? How will you pay the bills?

Short term DH can support us both but it would mean we can only pay minimum credit card bills etc.

How can I prevent getting pneumonia and ending up in hospital again?

How can I prevent tripping in a pot hole on a pavement and breaking a bone?

I mean seriously, what stupid fucking questions. What are you meant to say!?

nojob · 19/02/2020 20:27

How

The flu/cold was bad luck - hopefully that won't happen again.

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2020 20:27

OK so if you do get another chance take it. If not, can you sign on with an agency? Do something on a self employed basis?

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2020 20:27

What about your periods? You've had loads of good suggestions

LilyLovesLacey · 19/02/2020 20:28

3 surely, and I think that's fair. It's a warning not docking your pay.

What? Someone said two instances off of any duration gets a warning. Which means merely 2 days in a whole year calling in sick gets you a warning.

Unless you were talking about the 3 months mat pay from op?

Ilovetravelling · 19/02/2020 20:28

I too used to have terrible period pains requiring time off work every month. I often used to go to work then get sent home as I could hardly stand up straight & was physically sick with it. Unfortunately it went on for many years until my first child was born. My employer was very supportive. Other than that I would always go to work with bad throats/colds etc as I really didn't want to take the p*. Maybe you should consider this to save your job. And yes go & see the doctor.

Dickvandog · 19/02/2020 20:28

All together now, everyone🎵 Smile

Let’s start at the very beginning....It’s a very good place to start 🎶

Are you going to the GP, OP??

daisypond · 19/02/2020 20:28

Er no, it said they can be let go "for any reason/no reason apart from discrimination" if it's not been two years yet.
Yes, for any reason, and that includes not doing the job you are paid for. I’ve sat in on many a work meeting (employee representative where staff member isn’t in a union) where staff are let go in their probation period. It’s really common where I work. About a third of staff don’t get through.

Willowashen · 19/02/2020 20:30

Used to be a manager and for the company one sickness in probation was enough to fail you

Having a robust sickness policy is good management, but I’m always aghast at these employers who are ultra draconian, especially the one who was let go because she had two days off after her mother died. With the tightening on immigration, employees in low-wage/skill jobs should be less dispensable.

AhNowTed · 19/02/2020 20:30

They would be mad to give you another extension.

You are either not grasping the seriousness of this, or you simply don't care.

Dickvandog · 19/02/2020 20:30

Regarding periods

Periods

Just so it’s clear.....

LilyLovesLacey · 19/02/2020 20:33

Yes, for any reason, and that includes not doing the job you are paid for. But it might not be for that, so I don't get your reply, it includes but is not exclusive to that.

About a third of staff don’t get through.

I really don't understand what all these people are supposed to do if they cannot claim benefits. No wonder so many people are losing their homes etc etc. This whole world is fucked and none of us asked to be shoved out our mum's vagina and told to fuck off and make our way in this shit society. No wonder people top themselves when work is the most important thing, ylu literally live to work until you're old and even then they keep raising the pension age. Fucking depressing.

daisypond · 19/02/2020 20:34

Which means merely 2 days in a whole year calling in sick gets you a warning.
Two instances, not necessarily two days. Two separate instances of one day off each is worse than one longer period of several days. Though I do think two days maximum is an extreme policy.

MumaD · 19/02/2020 20:34

I'm not even sure why you've posted this? Does it make any difference if they pull you for a meeting about it? Will it change your sickness in the future?! Will your periods no longer be as bad if you know you'll lose the job if you have more absences??

LilyLovesLacey · 19/02/2020 20:35

more than 2

You think 3 days off a year constitutes a warning? 3 days is nothing really. It's perfectly reasonable to be sick for 3 days a year.

Ilikeviognier · 19/02/2020 20:35

Sorry but I agree with everyone else. I haven’t had the amount of time off in ten years (or indeed my entire working life) that you’ve had in 4 months. And yes I have dragged myself into work when I felt dreadful, including both times after each of my parents died.

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2020 20:36

Three separate instances! And from what the poster said it's a warning.
Fundamentally if you don't do your job, someone else picks it up. Fine now and then, part of teamwork, but not sustainable at all.
