To ask if you live near the Tyne Tunnel...

Do you know if any thing is visible from above? Can I visit the point to see where the tunnel goes under the water?

No you can't. The entrance to the tunnel goes underground before the river iykwim.

To ask if you live near the Tyne Tunnel...
Getitwright · 18/02/2020 15:48

The Tyne Tunnel is actually 3 tunnels, one each way and a pedestrian/cycle only tunnel. It enters under the Tyne from the South at Jarrow. The road tunnel entrance is set well back from the river, the pedestrian one much closer. Use Google maps, and follow the A19.

DowntownAbby · 18/02/2020 15:50

No, I don't live near it.

malmi · 18/02/2020 16:00

Well it's a tough one but I think that @DowntownAbby has produced the least useful post of 2020 so far!
Although maybe this one is a close second.

44PumpLane · 18/02/2020 16:03

I live near the Tyne tunnel so I'm marginally more useful than DowntonAbbey however your question has already been answered, so instead I'm just going to be nosy and ask why you're asking? Smile

Mammyloveswine · 18/02/2020 17:41

@44pumplane I also live near the tyne tunnel... hums neighbours theme tune

RapidRainbow · 18/02/2020 18:40

@44PumpLane

We live an hour south of it and go through a few times a year. We've been through twice today (Northumberland and back) and I always think - - I-- the kids would find it fascinating to see it from above! I thought at the very least there would be a plaque saying something like "30 metres below is a tunnel filled with traffic travelling at 40mph" or something to that effect!

OP posts:
Bezalelle · 18/02/2020 19:24

Why does it start so far from the actual river?

NothingIsWrong · 18/02/2020 19:35

@Bezalelle it has to slope down gently to get under the river.

RapidRainbow · 18/02/2020 19:40

I recently watched the BBC Channel Tunnel series and found it fascinating, I imagine the TT is ran similar (apart from the fact its self drive and not trains) .

Bunnybigears · 18/02/2020 19:41

I live nearby and the Tyne Tunnel really is a case of 'nothing to see here' must be one of the most boring tunnels I've ever encountered.

Way more interesting than you'd imagine Grin

I don't understand tunnels at all. I can't understand how they get the dirt out.
My fil is an engineer and explained it to me but I'm still not convinced it's not sorcery.

PinkiOcelot · 18/02/2020 19:49

I live not far from the tunnel. Totally off topic, but it’s a rip off!

RapidRainbow · 18/02/2020 19:49

Haha I think a lot to do with some fancy fan system.

Also appreciate those who are taking part in the discussion without sarcasm, appreciate this isn't an AIBU but it's the highest traffic forum I am part of.

OP posts:
helberg · 18/02/2020 19:51

It's a really boring tunnel and no, you can't see anything from above.
But you could take the children for a walk through the pedestrian tunnel - they'd get more of a feel for going under the water and how far it is and it's also nearer the river.

Runningonempty84 · 18/02/2020 19:53

It's more exciting than the Mersey Tunnel IMO.

But that tunnel on the a55 in Wales, near Conwy. Through the cliffs. That's a belter of a tunnel.

OutComeTheWolves · 18/02/2020 19:55

@Bunnybigears is right. It's a bit crap tbh.

TheSparklyPussycat · 18/02/2020 19:57

Ooh didn't realise there was a pedestrian tunnel. I must have a go. Perhaps I could combine it with Sheilds ferry.

In my childhood I often went to Greenwich with DF, and always had a walk through the foot tunnel and back again.

FuckThisWind · 18/02/2020 19:59

I'm about a mile from the Tyne Tunnel. Don't use it much. Used to when my X HB family lived the other side. Have to use it on Friday as I have a hospital appt in Darlington.

BullshitVivienne · 18/02/2020 20:01

@DowntownAbby I laughed - to be fair, you were answering the question posted in the title!

YouTheCat · 18/02/2020 20:53

£1.80! Daylight robbery, it is.

furrytoebean · 18/02/2020 21:05

I actually find driving through it very stressful but that might have more to do with the silver link roundabout.

Speaking of tunnels, I once paid to go on a boat ride down a tunnel and was shocked when that was the entirety of the ride, we just went into a dark tunnel then back out again.
There was a guide who talked all about the different types of bricks and when they were made.
Me and dh had the giggles the entire time because I just thought that the idea of a boat ride down a tunnel is so dull that I must have misunderstood what the man at the ticket office was saying, but no actually that dull.

KittenVsBox · 18/02/2020 21:07

Cheaper if you get an account and pay up front, YouTheCat. £1.62 if memory serves.

RapidRainbow I reckon we could live quite close, as we are a similar distance south.

QuestionableMouse · 18/02/2020 21:13

Well you can see the ventilation stations but they're not interesting.

Gotta say it's slightly better than the Dartford Tunnel which I hate with a passion.
