To ask if you live near the Tyne Tunnel...

Do you know if any thing is visible from above? Can I visit the point to see where the tunnel goes under the water?

I have nothing more to add except I used to live near the Tune Tunnel (in the sublime metropolis of Hebburn Wink ) and all this talk of it’s crapness is making me homesick.

BarbaraofSeville · 18/02/2020 21:18

£1.80 is cheap for a tunnel, many cost a lot more.

I was fascinated as to how the channel tunnel goes up an down so much, to keep within a certain type of rock, I would have thought it would be relatively flat in the middle, or at least gently sloping down then up, but no, the BBC programme shows that it undulates quite a bit.

The TT does have a (some?) big chimneys to provide ventilation that can be seen from above ground.

I used to love in Howden within a 2 minute walk of the pedestrian tunnel entrance but I'm from Northumberland and back living there now but still consider myself close to the tunnel.

It feels super expensive and is extremely boring Grin

Cherrysoup · 18/02/2020 22:08

Weirdly, I’m watching the Heist, set in Northumberland and the police have just gone through the tunnel to try to catch the last remaining suspects.

HatRack · 18/02/2020 22:22

I live a walk from the jarra side.

Paintingtheroseswhite · 18/02/2020 22:32

Ahem, brandishes clipboard and nerd hat.

The second Tyne Tunnel built next to the first isn't actually a tunnel at all but more of a tube which sits on the river bed. It was constructed in sections which were floated out on to the river bed then sunk into place, joined together and then the whole thing pumped out. They actually had a bit of a nightmare with some of the sections as they were floated out to coincide with high tide when it was salt water under them so they were more buoyant. They hadn't factored in a delay so when the tide turned it was freshwater underneath them so less buoyancy and they sank faster than they had wanted them to.

Anyway, as you were

TattiePants · 18/02/2020 23:08

@Paintingtheroseswhite I must also be a nerd as also thought that was interesting! That makes the new tunnel seem a bit less safe somehow - I’ll be looking for cracks next time I go through it!

MargotLovedTom1 · 18/02/2020 23:21

Ugh I hate being in tunnels. The thought of water getting in makes it a hundred times worse, like a disaster movie. Actually a Tyne Tunnel disaster film would be quite entertaining:
"How man, shift ya arse, there's watter pissin' doon in here. Ya ganna drown if ye divvent get oot, ye daft shite!"

I am from the area so this is said with affection Wink.

Cherrysoup · 18/02/2020 23:34

Omg, we need a Tyne Tunnel disaster movie, possibly with Jimmy (Don’t look me in the eyes) Nail as the lead! Brilliant! There would be explosions, lots of flames shooting out from the Jarrow end and people sheltering in the Washington services. Could we have the Angel of the North involved somehow? Possibly pretend it’s above the tunnel and it toppled over? Omg!

BullshitVivienne · 19/02/2020 10:13

Denise Welch and Jill Halfpenny as Geordie mams, waiting for news on their children / partners.

RapidRainbow · 19/02/2020 12:25

@KittenVsBox I'm in a coastal town beginning with R 😊

I remember when I was a kid, the tunnel was scarier as it was two way traffic and not much room for driver error!

The ventilation stations could satisfy my urge to sight it from land though?

@furrytoebean have you been through recently, coming form the south it seems there's a bypass of the SL now.

NomDeDespair · 19/02/2020 12:54

I live about a mile from the Jarrow end of the Tyne Tunnel. There is a road where you can stand and see the traffic going into the tunnel in Jarrow. It’s not very interesting though!

MsSquiz · 19/02/2020 13:02

DH & BIL walked through the pedestrian tunnel after last year's Great North Run because DH was sick and they didn't want to wait in the traffic out of South Shields.
They said it was really eerie, they were the only ones in it!

malmi · 19/02/2020 13:06

Pedestrian tunnel has wooden escalators. Not many of those left.

smalalalalalala · 19/02/2020 13:08

Take the tunnel twice a day.

You should take your kids at peak time, and see a bunch of monkeys trying to drive... that's entertaining!

It's a rip off, if you take it once in a while it's fairly cheap but if you commute, it's ridiculous.

Pedestrian had been closed for years (3 years + 2 years delay or something like that).

kelper · 19/02/2020 13:11

Oooo I love a tunnel, and the fact theres a pedestrian one too! Wish I didn't live at the opposite end of the country!
I always thought you should be able to walk or cycle through the Euro Tunnel, That would be such a cool thing to do.
Maybe once a year they should shut it to trains and let people walk/cycle/rollerskate.....

KittenVsBox · 19/02/2020 13:17

@RapidRainbow ok, not quite. Grab me a lemon top, and I'll be there is 15!

iVampire · 19/02/2020 13:22

Pedestrian tunnels can be really creepy. I wouldn’t walk through one alone

mollypuss1 · 19/02/2020 13:57

Me and my mate used to go into the pedestrian tunnel and pretend we were in an episode of The Equalizer when we were slightly odd teens. I was always Edward Woodward.
