To report colleague for racist comments

Redorangesblue · 17/02/2020 13:16

I don’t want to be classed as a tell tale as I know this never goes down well and I’ve already reported one other person for racist comments before. I feel like I take things too personally and maybe I should put up and shut up and stop rocking the boat.

We work in a healthcare setting and this person has made several racist comments about China and Chinese people and the corona virus and telling a very blatant personal story about how they’ve asked to be move away from Chinese people in a public place.

I feel it’s inappropriate to say these things in a work place. Whatever your personal thoughts about different people, they should not be shared when you’re at work. Just for context this person isn’t English/British. They’re Eastern European.

*other than what it is; ignorance supporting ignorance

that should be.

Aridane · 21/02/2020 14:36

I have no idea what the ‘cancel culture’ tweet @GenderIsBollox quotes means

LastTrainEast · 23/02/2020 11:12

"If you aren't racist, you have no fear of losing your job over racist comments" it sounds nice there, but back in 21st century Britain it's not so easy. You can even get fired here for saying a woman is an adult human female.

ilovesooty · 23/02/2020 11:19

The thread isn't about gender identity. It's about racist comments.

LastTrainEast · 23/02/2020 11:29

ilovesooty It's about using accusations of racism/hate speech as a stick to beat people with and I just pointed out that being innocent is no protection from people who do that.

ilovesooty · 23/02/2020 13:42

So you're saying that people are routinely disciplined at work in your experience for making racist comments that they didn't make?

LastTrainEast · 23/02/2020 20:56

I'm saying that despite a real problem of racism in this country some people like to use the accusation as a trump card. To be fair in some cases it is ignorance rather than malice.

Scott72 · 23/02/2020 21:02

I don't think you should have reported it, this is really none of your business. And stuff like this can stay on a person's work record a long time, and can be misinterpreted and used against them at some later date.

ilovesooty · 23/02/2020 21:14

Well @Scott72 if they don't want it on their work record that they've been disciplined for making racist comments they shouldn't make them in the first place. If I felt people had made racist comments that certainly wouldn't stop me reporting them.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 23/02/2020 22:11

Ffs, when did calling out racism become woke? When did it become snitching, or so acceptable that you’re compared with Nazis for questioning it. This is fucking scary

This.
Just read the whole thread and it's depressing as hell.
As for the comments like "just doing it for the reaction" and to "ignore them"?
(Sorry, long thread and can't find them now) just.... WTF?
Fuck that shit. Maybe people do want to just go about ignoring racism and calling it out, but I'm not one of them.

YgritteSnow · 23/02/2020 23:45

Almost every person on this thread needs to read a book called "The Madness Of Crowds". Seriously.

HeadachesByTheDozen · 24/02/2020 02:32

@Scott72 Wtf? It is everyone's business to speak out against racism! And yeah, it goes on their record, because they did the wrong thing. If you don't say racist things - that are not 'misinterpreted' (omg) - then you have nothing to worry about. Why are you defending racists and attacking whistleblowers?

atomicblonde30 · 24/02/2020 02:34

I’d say it’s more xenophobic than racist but still unacceptable (yet unsurprising) either way.

My children are mixed race Chinese/Caucasian the constant nasty comments, vulgar ‘jokes’ and prejudices towards Chinese people since Coronavirus appeared are frustrating and infuriating, I would always urge anyone to challenge or report this behaviour if you feel able.

SirChing · 24/02/2020 05:22

OP you did the right thing. I had to report racism in the NHS towards a patient from a nurse and it is such a hard thing to do. People do band together and give you a hard time for reporting. I hope you are ok.

My manager didn't give a shit and didn't do anything, despite the nurse having said to a black lady that she looked like a monkey and did she want a banana. The nurse then screamed in my face, called me names and abused me when I reported him. But I would do it again every time. At least your conscience will be clear.

Well, almost every person on this thread is hard,y going to rush off and read a book referred to by a random person on the internet without even knowing what that book is!

Think the blurb and the reviews says all I need to know about some.
In a nutshell, asks basically is it social justice warrior and mass hysteria to want to call out racism.

HeadachesByTheDozen · 25/02/2020 06:09

Here is an article from an Australian of Chinese heritage about the affect of Coronavirus and racism. www.mamamia.com.au/coronavirus-racism/

Clackyheels · 25/02/2020 06:23

Of course you should be outraged and offended. Yes, please report it. It needs to stop.
